Greed and Good Manners

Have you noticed how lacking in common courtesy people are
when they have to stand in line? If someone in a grocery
line just has a few objects and if my cart is full, I let
them go ahead but very few people do this. It only adds
two minutes to your grocery store experience. Drivers have
road rage, (including my own husband) and are very impolite.
They act like taking an extra minute is going to kill them.
Telephone etiquette is simply non existant.

The greed of politicians is legendary. They make all kinds
of deals with each other and with lobbys that furnish
perks. They travel at our expense. I have noticed that
children now expect to start at the level their parents
attained after a life time of work.

I have an old bookcase...probably l50 years old in mahogany.
It was agreed amoung my children that my daughter is to get
it. My daughter in law said, "Linda will never come and
get that bookcase and I will because I have a place for it"
I was apalled. Everytime I make a purchase, she always tells me how expensive it is. I am not very saving but why
should I be? I am going to wring every drop of enjoyment
out of the years that I have left. I have an old secretary
that is very fragile, much too fragile for a child and she
has asked for thatNOW. Sheesh! Once she was grateful for
every thing that came her way but she became americanized
very quickly. You can probably guess that I am offended
by this. I am going to make arrangements to get the bookcase to Linda very soon.

June has given in to her children and is stuck in a pokey
little house in a town that she detests. She keeps saying
how unhappy she is. Her daughter insisted that she move
there and buy that awful house. Her daughter was motivated
by greed. She also pushed a used car off on her that had
belonged to her dead father-in-law. Avis is about to be
stuck in Bethesda with her daughter. This daughter has
an apartment in the basement and is one of the rudest people
I have ever known and I have known her since she was a baby.
It will end in tears. Who would ever be happy in a basement
apartment? Only honeymoon couples I'll bet. Needless to
say, Avis and Lisa will not get along five minutes.

This is a rant but I remember what a good mother both Avis
and June have been. I bought long term care insurance for
myself and Ted so we won't have to be at the mercy of my
children. So has my sister. It is the in laws that we
are insuring against.

Giving items out now reduces the size of your estate, which just might give attorneys a little less in fees when your estate is being divided. My mother found it enjoyable to give her things to her daughters while she could.

Nothing like a good rant to get the blood circulating! Time for a tall glass of southern iced tea on the veranda. (I, too, allow Aldi shoppers to go in front of me.)

Good for you. I take any kind of bags that other stuff comes in too. I
use cloth bags for everything but sometimes don't have them with me.

Other than if I no longer can care for myself, I don't have the problem of family wanting anything that I own. On the contrary: 90% will likely be sold at auction or an estate sale- but I know what you mean!

I know. Our tastes are all different.

I hear horror stories from Ed who volunteers running down complaints at nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Greedy children warehousing parents and manipulating them into selling the home and running wild with the power of attorney. It's good you are arranging for Linda to get the book case now.

I can see assisted living centers where you have your own little apartment
and a button to push if you need a doctor or a nurse. Most nursing homes
are so awful and I have known children who ran wild with a power of
attorney like Ted's brother did.

Reminds me of that Christmas time we were in the long line at the post office and a lady was trying to get people to let her go ahead of them because her husband was in the hospital. She said 'doesn't anyone care that my husband is in the hospital?' and I said 'they might care, but they aren't going to let you go ahead of them.' Ended up we took her package and some money (not enough) and mailed it for her when we finally got to the counter.

You always do the kind thing. I forgot to mention that Avis put her
daughter through Harvard Law by working three jobs.

I'm sure my children could ignore me just as well if I were living with them.

I am sure they love you but are just thoughtless until the next time they
need a favor.

No problem here.I know that my children will not want me,but that is fine.
Mike is taking care of everything. We are all set.I think.
We have been getting rid of a lot of things.
2 lawnmowers, grill and propane tank etc.
Ghe she looks great and maybe rent it out to the children to move in.

One of Ted's friends put it this way when he called today. He said he had
a bad case of the O. L. D. S.
