Dogs That Are Too Smart and Other Stuffi

I was smart enough not to put hardly any of the packages
under the tree, but I did put a quilt for Chewey and a
package of raw hide sticks for Rex. I thought it would be safe sealed in plastic and wrapped in gift wrapping. Not
so. Yesterday morning while we were having our coffee,
We
heard a rustling sound and Rex was caught in the act of
unwrapping his present. Santa won't visit him again.

I am a little unsettled because we don't know when Linda
can be here. It is complicated by the fact that her 93
year old MIL died. I would like to just cook one Christmas
dinner but likely will do two. Ellie has to work clear up
to Christmas Eve day which I think is crazy. Kids are not
going to want to study on Christmas Eve.

I made chocolate fudge which is too grainy with pecans and
I made a butterscotch fudge that is really good but very
rich. I put macadamia nuts in it. I will give a lot of
it to the kids. I was really disappointed with the chocolate because I used the never fail recipe but somehow
it did.

I read in the paper that dogs have been trained to sniff out all kinds of diseases (even melanomas) in humans, and their sniff diagnosis is more accurate than lab tests!
PS Sunshine's mother brought me a tin of Christmas candies that are so good I have to force myself to eat only two or three pieces a day.

I love fudge

Santa will absolutely keep it all out of sight till Christmas day.

Ellie teaches in the Moore school system and they are having a full day of
school on the 24th. Insane isn't it.

Didn't you put a note on Rex's package: "Do not open 'til Christmas"? Your fault!
comment by solitaire on Dec 17, 2010 7:05 AM ()
I guess it was my fault because I failed to warn him.

I can't believe the kids are not getting out until Christmas Eve. Today is Kenzie and Bailey's last day of school.

This is the last day for the mid del system. I think Moore is insane.

Rex is a smart dog. Hug him for me. I like grainy fudge. I made brownies for the first time two weeks ago from Betty Crocker (I think). It turned out fine. I am making more for the party Saturday night. Wish you could come.

Rex is a hug magnet. I hope your party goes off wonderfully well. Wish all of us could be there.

My sister's bulldog Harley (may he rest in peace) was a lot of fun to open presents with, he'd play with the paper, toss it up in the air, carry it around in his mouth. She's had other bulldogs since he died, but none as nice as Harley.

Buddy is probably better behaved. Rex is digging his way to China again.
I won't reprimend him again until spring.

Smart dog...I can never wait, either.

I have worked so many Christmas Eves, I've lost count.
comment by juliansmom on Dec 16, 2010 3:25 PM ()
I have worked a few too and I never liked it. One Christmas day while Linda was with her father, I cleaned house. That was my worst Christmas ever.

Poor Rex - I bet he was just starting to 'taste' it through the wrapping
comment by febreze on Dec 16, 2010 2:53 PM ()
The smell was too powerful to resist.

Geez, I though you were going to say that you're giving the butterscotch fudge to your mybloggers pals.... Bummer. Plastic can't stop a dog's nose. Even if he didn't smell what was inside the plastic, all it would have taken is one puncture in one package to make the whole lot smell like raw hide. :::shakes head:::: Merry Christmas!
comment by jjoohhnn on Dec 16, 2010 2:44 PM ()
You know, I never thought about Golden Retrievers being used for rescue and drug sniffing. The rawhide was a breeze.

How funny. The funniest part is that you thought Rex would not know what it was! They use dogs to sniff out drugs and explosives because their sense of smell is so keen. They can smell through anything... just about! Plastic is only a barrier to our noses.

I should have known. He can be outside and the minute we start to eat,
he wants back in. We had talked about how he could smell through glass.
reply by elderjane on Dec 17, 2010 8:12 AM ()
Poor Rex.Do not scold him.You had in under the tree and he can smelled it.
Put it out on Christmas morn. After all he is a dog.
comment by fredo on Dec 16, 2010 12:36 PM ()
We just laughed at him. I saved the rawhide sticks after I gave him a few.
reply by elderjane on Dec 17, 2010 8:14 AM ()
I would love to try some fudge for ya - send it along! haha
Sorry Rex got to his presents early. I hope Santa forgives him and tries again next year. Maybe Santa should keep the presents out of reach til Christmas day.
