Diagnosis at Last

Ted went for his echocardiagram Friday. It revealed that he
has had a stroke. They immediately checked him for clots and he didn't have any. We are both unaware of when or how it happened but suspect it happened at night and since he
takes aspirin at night, this probably saved him. It accounts for the neuropathy and he needs to exercise to strengthen his legs and arms. Of course he is depressed
because he thinks he will never feel better, but of course
it takes time.

I am relieved to at least know why he has lost some of his coordination and I know it can be recovered. We were so lucky that there is not more damage.

I am helping as best I can. We are getting out of the house more. At first, he thought he would never be better but now knows he can regain the
strength that he lost.

I'm sure you will be supportive and helpful in Ted's mental recovery.

Yes, the confusion was not severe. Evidently the blood pooled on one side
of his heart instead of going to the brain.

What a close call. But now he can get better. Work on his mood. He needs to be hopeful.

It is terribly depressing to lose strength but I am insisting that we get
out more. I think that will help.

What a relief to find out after all those tests. There is that thing where people get mad that their health problem can't be solved with surgery and/or a pill: it's so boring to find out it is up to them to exercise in order to recover. I've had that feeling myself.

It is hard for Ted and until he googled post stroke treatment, he thought
that he would never get better. It just takes time.

Finally!!! Wow... I am glad there was a diagnosis and I am glad that it can be worked on...

Yes. He says he won't take blood thinners but perhaps he will change his mind.

He can always get some physical therapy to help him regain his strength in his arms and legs. Thank goodness it was not worse. He should be able to recover fully.

Since he has finally discovered his problem, He is more at ease because he
knows that he has to exercise.

So glad to know you finally know what is going on with Ted.I understand why this depresses and frightens him, but his prognosis is good since it did not do more damage and he can recover with the exercise. My girlfriend's mother lived to be 104- and she had a stroke in her late 80's or early 90's.

Yes. Evidently Ted had more than a T.I.A. but less than most since the worst thing is a loss of strength particularly on the left side.

Jerri that is good news on there isn't and damages there with the blood clot.He will feel better.Tell him to think positive and relax.Yes,aspirin did help there.
Tell Ted we will be thinking of him.So that he is able to make that cruise again.Good luck with the therapy. He will be fine. How is his speech?
comment by fredo on July 20, 2010 8:03 AM ()
Fortunately his speech was not affected. Just the motor skills and the fine motor skills especially. We can't seem to predict where life will take us, can we?
