Books and Authors

This is a book lovers blog. Most of us are big time
readers and enjoy sharing what we read. The library is a
friend to us all.

I have to confess that I read almost solely for pleasure.
My particular favorites are English Novels and it isn't
easy to find good ones. Elizabeth Buchan writes a very
engrossing book, Elizabeth George is a favorite and I
used to like Joanna Trollope but she has not done well
recently. P. D. James is quite wonderful, too.

Yesterday, I overdosed on an Elizabeth Buchan book and felt
almost the same as you do when you eat too much chocolate.
I was desperate to finish by bedtime and I did but we
didn't have dinner till I finished. Fortunately, I have
an understanding and indulgent husband.

Another find, if you like fiction, is a book called "Caleb's
Crossing" by Geraldine Brooks. She is another favorite
author.

I hope Steve was kidding in his comment.
I still have to get back into my reading. Soon I will have no me time so I need to take advantage while I can.

I love to read but I am acquiring a taste for movies. I sometimes read the books that movies are based on- like recently, I both watched and read, "The Flowers of War", but that is usually out of curiosity to see how the screenplays were constructed. In the last example, the screenplay introduced a central character (played by Christian Slade) who did not exist in the book. Interesting!

I thought you women were supposed to be such good multitaskers, yet you can't read and prepare dinner for your husbands at the same time???

How can I do mundane chores when I am transported to another time and world?

Kudos for you. While I love to read, I'm off novels for awhile. Non-fiction has my attention these days.

books are great to have on travels --a lot of caravan parks have a swap room for books and videos .
No particular author i like just a good fantasy tale

I read a good fantasy called The Night Circus. It was our book club
selection. You might like it.

This summer I started a book that I thought was pretty good, a cop procedural. I actually said to myself, This is a good book for once, I hope I like it all the way through. Mr. YouKnow saw I was reading it and said "I see you're reading THAT book. It started out good, but I was disappointed with the writing as the story developed." Rats!

If you haven't read Thomas Perry, try him. He wrote a series about Jane Whitehead, a woman of mixed white/Indian heritage who becomes a guide for those being hunted by abusive husbands, or for those fleeing the law because they are innocent, etc., or for those fleeing the mob. They are truly page-turners. He also writes about a hit man, not part of the mob but has taken assignments from them. You will find yourself really liking him. The Butcher's Boy is the first in that series.

I hate being disappointed, it is sort of like the author ran out of steam
in the middle.

The tongue is appropriate. I am too prudish for S&M, entirely too
middle class to enjoy reading about it.

I read for pleasure too, but with so much interesting factual material around, I can't get into fiction. The only books I can remember reading more than once are "A Brief History of Time" (Stephen Hawking) and "The Power of Now" (Echart Tolle) if that gives you some idea of how I spend my reading time... Currently I have a huge volume "Von Braun: Dreamer of Space, Engineer of War". It's kind of like a novel.

Ted is a big fan of Stephen Hawking...Not me! If I read non fiction it is
psychology, philosophy or history. The Power of Now sounds like something
that I would like.

Thanks for recommendations. Now that I have a Kindle Fire I will see if the library has these titles. What an easy way to get books! xx, T (Catch Ed waiting till I finish a book to get his dinner. )

The kids love their Kindles. It is a wonderful way to get books.

Thanks for the recommendations! Nothing like a good book to take you away for awhile.

Yes, most of the time I read to enter another world and can shut everything
out. Ted watches TV while I read and it doesn't bother him at all.

I have the complete list/collection in hard cover (with the jackets) of Dick Francis. He is one of my very favorite English authors. Real mystery stuff. Centers on the steeplechase horse world. I am thinking about donating the 30-some-books to the local library.

Dick Francis' publisher was Harper & Row and his editor was Joan Kahn, wjp was there when I worked there. I have read his books but find the unvarying horse theme (even though I love horses) wears out for me.

Laura is a Dick Francis fan. You would enjoy comparing notes.
