Kids, Cupcakes and a Visit to the V.a.

Ashley has been lamenting her lack of cupcakes for some
time and has dropped a lot of hints recently. I made 24
today and sent them home with the girls. I like to give
them cupcakes rather than cake because they don't get as
many calories as they would in a slice of cake. Both girls
are into the age of zits and Ashley is especially stricken.
She is in 5th grade so maybe it will clear up by the time
she goes to middle school.

Ted had an appointment to pick up his hearing aids from
the V.A. hospital today. Alfredo had to convince him that
he had a hearing problem and needed to do this. I am deeply
grateful to Fredo.

The Oklahoma City V.A. is under investigation. I had written
to my Senator and to the Director of the Hospital with my
complaints. We use our insurance for most things but Ted
stays in the system for dental work and hearing aids that
our insurance doesn't cover. He hasn't seen his primary
physician for l4 months.

The people who profit from war and the ones that lust for
battle need to spend some time in a V.A. hospital and see
the sad and broken men that have returned from Iraq and
Afghanistan. One very young and good looking boy in a
wheel chair was very badly brain damaged. His mother was
looking after him and she was wrung out with exhaustion.
I wonder if the Cheneys and G. W. Bush would be chastened.

About zits: please suggest that your DIL takes the girls to a knowledgeable doctor or skin specialist. Just like they now know ulcers often best respond when treated with antibiotics, zits on teens respond best to anti-bacterial treatments ranging from Benzoyl peroxide to retinoid and prescription drugs. (Note I wrote anti-bacterial not antibiotics. Oh, to be a teenager again!

Ted and I have urged Ellie to get the girls to a dermatologist. In the
meantime they need to scrub their faces.

Cupcakes taken to school is still permitted? In this day and age, with peanut allergies, I'm surprised.

With two sons, that was one of my biggest fears, sending them off to war. Both my parents and all of my uncles saw combat. All were permanently changed in one way or another.

I swore during Vietnam that I would take Bobby to Canada if the war was
going on when he was grown. I didn't put in two decades of love and care
to have him slaughtered on a battlefield and I feel just as strongly about
all the young men whose lives are wasted or sacrificed in these senseless
wars. Men never come back the same. I had two uncles who were in WWI and
one ended up in the psychiatric ward of the V.A. hospital and the other
one committed suicide.

It is wonderful that we can now avoid zits IF WE CAN KEEP OUR HANDS OFF OUR
FACES. That is Ashley's big problem. It is distressing to Grandpa and he
has been discussing it with her.

Yes, I am concerned about the kids that join the military. They do
feel bullet proof at that age.

Ashley has grown up so quickly. I always think of her as the little bling princess.

Ashley is taller than anyone else in our family. She still loves bling
and style. I fully expect her to be six feet tall. She is 5'8 now.

My face looked like Zitsville back in the day and needless to say (probably) it has a major negative influence on a preteen/teen. NPR did a piece the other morning about the bacteria that causes most cases. Back then it was "avoid chocolate" and other tales that had nothing to do with what turned out to be the facts. Treatments are available now!

It's really amazing that so many young people are willing to signup for the military. Sounds dangerous to us, but these kids must still have that indestructible mindset. There is plenty of youtube footage of actual combat and some of those guys are having way too much fun.

Wow! I missed the NPR report but my comment went in the same direction- causes more bacterial than sugar or diet.

I goofed, your comment is above.
