Mobsters

Oklahoma has certainly had her share of depression era
gun men and some like Jesse James and Pretty Boy Floyd
were admired.

Picture if you will, a red haired, freckled faced boy hitch-
hiking home from CCC camp to visit Judy, his sweetheart.
There wasn't much traffic in Eastern Oklahoma and he did
more walking than usual. All of a sudden, a big black car
stopped and he crawled inside.

He was met by a friendly face and they soon established
rapport. Gordon asked the stranger if he played in a
band because there was a violin case on the back seat.
The stranger laughed and pulled over and opened the violin
case and showed Gordon what was inside. It was a machine
gun and the stranger was Pretty Boy Floyd.

Because he had the reputation of helping the poor, Gordon
didn't rat on him, he just told his sweetheart and his
family about the encounter.

Gordon was my husbands father and he and Judy went on to
produce 6 boys. This is a family story that still gets
repeated often when these 6 boys get together.

I think you almost had to go through the depression to understand. Oklahoma
was hit so hard. I wrote my memories of that time for my children and it
is almost too personal to share it here. There was a lot of hunger and
poverty that was hard to endure.

Great story ... Pretty bold of Floyd to show Gordon the gun.

In that time, when people were so poor and desperate, I think they got a
vicarious thrill seeing banks robbed.

Gordon was fortunate. Floyd was a psychopathic cop killer.

Yes, he was. It was fortunate that he showed Gordon a more decent side
of his personality.
