Rex and His Problem

Tuesday night, Rex was unable to jump up on our bed and
sleep with us. He circled the bed and grumbled and finally
went off to sleep on a rug near us. He is such a big dog
that the specter of hip displacement scared me to death.
He weighs ll9 pounds. We missed his presence sorely.

The next day I noticed that he was favoring his right leg and
made an appointment with the Vet. His Vet is a big, beautiful
blond who could easily wrestle a horse to its knees. She
spent a lot of time with him and decided on a course of
treatment. He is having a series of shots, joint support
tablets, tramadol for pain and a non steroid tablet. We
are grateful that something can be done to ease the arthritis.

Fortunately, due to a lot of experience on the farm, we will
be able to buy the shots from them and give them ourselves.
Giving the oral medications is a lot harder. Hidden in a
treat, sometimes helps but he has learned to chew and detect
his pills. I have to chase him and keep him from spitting
them out.

The end result is that he is a lot friskier and playing
again like he did in his younger days.

I'm so glad it's helping! That's great, even if it's a pain!

Poor Rex! Hope the meds help and he feels better soon, although from your description they are helping already.

My late cat, Sniffy, used to pocket the pill in his cheek and spit it out a half hour later. Glad Rex is feeling better. Taking care of ailing pets is nerve-wracking, ain't it. When Sniff couldn't jump on the bed anymore and giving him a way to get on was very awkward, I would place him myself. I got to got to know when he wanted down, even at 4 a.m., and would put him down and go back to sleep. I still miss him.

I can't lift Rex and we miss having him sleep with us but we are adjusting.
It is a battle with the pills.

Bless his heart. It's good to hear that the treatment is helping.

Yes, he is playing again and frisking. I am glad that we caught it in time.

Oh, and Kraymer is on Dasaquin, which has helped him. We also got him stairs so he can get on and off the bed without hurting himself.

Ted is contemplating stairs or a ramp, unfortunately our bed is extra high
and it makes it more difficult.

too funny how pups can figure out where exactly the pill is! We have used Pill Pockets (by Greenies) for the past few years, daily, with only one or two Kraymer spit outs... I would highly recommend them! But the fact that you can give injections is fantastic. I wouldn't trust myself. I hope Mr. Rex is feeling spry soon.

We gave intra-muscular shots all the time on the farm. I will look for
pill pockets...they would be invaluable.

I had to give Benny antibiotics after surgery and I'd stick in a piece of hot dog and give it to him before breakfast. Anything I throw in the air get gobbled before it hits the floor. No time to inspect! Peanut butter used to be the delivery method, but like Rex, he figured that out and licked around the pill. Good luck!

Sometimes that works for us, sometimes not. I have been making a slit in
meat or cheese but he inspects it for pills.

We were both prescribed tramadol for arthritis but found aleve works better
for us.
