Apalled

What has happened to Americans? Have we all lost our minds and become infatuated with celebrity and sheer greed? Even President Obama felt it necessary to comment
on the accouterments of a wealthy life that are just pure
excess.

I was shocked to read that Jesse Jackson, Jr. will spend 2.5 years in prison for converting campaign funds to his own
use. Who needs a Rolex watch that costs over 43 thousand
dollars and the other items that he and his wife bought
including spending over five thousand dollars on alcohol.
What was he thinking? The transitory pleasure of admiring
one's wrist is not worth jail time.

Are we so insecure that we have things instead of inner
resources? I think that a lust for expensive houses, cars,
boats and vacation homes can never be sated. There has
to come a time when a well balanced person can say,
I have food, clothing, shelter and transportation and that
is ENOUGH!! I would like to see everyone have those
basic needs met.

What kind of message does greed and excess send to our
young people? Will they be willing to lie and cheat in
order have a luxurious life style? The fundamentals of
happiness are love, friends, family and satisfying work.
I hope that children are able to work that out instead of
becoming dazzled by material things most of them will
never have.

Daddy would not have loved this.Mommy also. What is with these people who do things like this.
Sorry to hear this and hope that this will be a lesson for him.

Honesty was obviously not a quality prized in the Jackson home. We love bling but not to the extent that we would cheat to get it.

I am positive that everyone in Congress, all the lobbists, and a good many politicians at the state and city level are willing to lie and cheat in order to live a luxurious lifestyle, and that is what is teaching the younger generation that integrity and ethics don't matter.

Sadly, you are right, Laura. We no longer trust our politicians who ought to live up to a higher standard because they are our leaders instead of lowering themselves to a much lower moral standard than the rest of us.
If we only knew how many lie, cheat and steal we would be devastated.

People who flaunt money and do this type of stuff make me ill. The thumbs down is for the Jacksons. You get the heart!

Wouldn't it be nice to live in a world where everyone had enough food, adequate shelter and decent medical care? my heart goes out to those who do not and that is why I am so disgusted with such greedy, grasping
behavior.

Apparently he has his father's flair for theatrics. He acted really contrite in court and succeeded in convincing the judge to undercut the prosecution's recommended sentence.

Is bipolar worse than being bisexual???
reply by steeve on Aug 15, 2013 1:03 PM ()
I thought it was extremely lenient of the judge to let the couple serve at
different times so a parent would be with their children at all times. I am so tired of everyone who is accused of wrong doing saying that they are bi-polar.

I think as humans our biggest downfall is the confusion that exists over what we want as opposed to what we really need. Myself I am an individual of simple needs, I learned the art of frugality from my mom. There were 9 of us kids and my dad never made more then 12K a year, my mom was a financial genius feeding and clothing us. While all the time making sure we did not feel that we were deprived of anything

When I think back to the days when my father and mother were struggling
just to own their home, I remember a lot of happiness with simple amusements like picnics and a freezer full of home made ice cream shared
with family and friends. My oldest granddaughter, who is a band director in a Tulsa highschool is forever in hot water because she and her husband
can't live on their joint incomes because they have to have so many things.

Owning luxurious things has become a symbol of achievement, instead of the things that are truly more valuable. Jackson, Jr. was swept up in that but what made it ruinous was that he cheated to get it. How did he think he would get away with it? Celebrities are getting caught in all kinds of mischief -- did he think he was invulnerable?

They were a good looking couple with a famous name and probably thought
they were immune to prosecution. I can understand that it must have been hard living in the shadow of his father who is a civil rights icon, but
a showy lifestyle was not the way to assert his individuality.
