A Pricey Week

Our refrigerator barely five years old was warm. Oh no. Guh, ruined the coffee with spoiled creamer. This had happened once before. Sears guy came, $75, said the insulation had “fallen” and was covering up duct that allowed the transfer of cold air from the freezer (still working, thanks be) to the main chamber. He also said, while we listened in rapt fascination, that this was not repairable. He got it cold again by using a steamer to unfreeze the conduit part so that air could flow again, but it would just keep happening, he said. And Sears would give us $100 off on a new refrigerator.

So Ed thought and thought and for one wild, crazy moment verging on assisted suicide, he said maybe we should buy a steamer such as the one the repair guy had wherein every time the refrigerator had this problem, we could unfreeze the area. But he came to his senses (thereby saving his own life) and we went to Home Depot and bought a new GE, side by side, somewhat taller, so Steve, our aces handyman is coming tomorrow to break down those over-the-fridge cabinets that are rarely used.

So far, so good. Then the dishwasher door wouldn’t go all the way down so that I could unload the dishes. If one moves the door a bit to the side, it will go down so we did that. But then when it came time to run it, the electronics wouldn’t mate. So we jiggled it back and it worked. This went on for a day and then the door decided that it would be permanently warped. It begged for a dignified memorial service. This happened once before and we almost bought a new one, actually made the sale, and then Ed canceled it because he got the washer to work again. But no luck this time so off we go this afternoon to Home Depot to get another one. The grinding you hear in the background is Ed’s teeth.

And last night, sighing a great sigh of oppression, I donned plastic work gloves and unloaded the dishwasher and washed everything by hand. Then I put everything back in the dishwasher to drain because there was no other way to get wet dishes out of the way. I dare say that while we are waiting for delivery of a new unit, I will be monitoring you-know-who to go easy on his heavy use of dishes and glasses. There are only two of us and each night when I run the dishwasher, it looks like we had a party.

Meanwhile, our cordless Panasonic phone, main unit in the family room, the one most easily accessible, is not re-charging. We changed the battery to one we got at Radio Shack and it was fine for several days and now it is beeping again and not recharging. So I must again call the company to find out what can be done.

And the bright spot was that Sanctimoron came in second in both primary races last night. His concession speech was masterful in its humility and courage and bravery. Sincerity is the key to success. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made. He’s got that part down cold.

The news people said 8 percent of the voters said they had voted for Romney because they coudn't stomach Sanctimoron.

Then Romney got on camera and blamed Obama for world hunger, the tsunamis, the hurricanes, the tornadoes, and his bad golf swing.

Girl I feel your pain--Big appliances giving up the ghost is such a pain, and costly.
BTW, a Panasonic cordless phone was the best phone I ever had--it lasted for years and survived drops nad mishaps and I had to duct tape the little stubby antenna on, but it was a fine piece of equipment. I still keep it for old times sake.

I have a thirty year old washer(It leaks so it sits on a tray.) and dryer, thirty year old refrigerator (front panel on one door shelf falls off, causing everything on the shelf to end up on the floor), forty-seven year old stove (One burner doesn't work. Oven runs 25 degrees hot.) New dishwasher. Five year old furnace and AC. I am thinking about replacing some things. I only hesitate because the new appliances don't last like the old ones. My dryer repair guy and furnace guy told me that.

Sorry you are mired in dying appliances. But just because new ones won't outlive you, is no reason not to upgrade. You need convenience in daily life devoid of food spilling on the floor on a bad day. That would be worth it to me. So if you can, get yourself some a new refrigerator at least. GE is the most reliable. (Or SubZero, but here we are talking big bucks -- they give a lifetime guarantee and repairs cost you nothing.)

As woeful as your appliance problems are, your post is hilarious! Masterful! Knowing Ed makes it all the better. Your misfortune(s) is my antidote. Thanks!

I am wrestling with replacing some still working appliances. I really
want a new oven. I could hear Ed gnashing his teeth all the way from Florida.

If money is not a big issue, why not go for it? Have you tried smooth-top ranges? Convection oven is best. We had a GE oven in our first house that wasn't convection. The steaks steamed instead of broiling.

I loved the part where he thought he was going to baby the refrigerator along. Good thing about Home Depot home delivery is they haul off the old ones. I'm fixing to pick out a new kitchen stove, can't decide whether to buy it right away or wait for summer.

Home Depot didn't have a good enough deal so we continued on to Bill Smith (local? big appliance dealer) and he got a later model, cost more, but better, and they will deliver and install ($150) this Friday. We got a GE Profile. Ed is a master negotiator. He pushes. And has been known to walk out.

Oooo-o-o-o. Sorry for you. BTW: My dishwasher has two legs. I miss the one I bought and installed myself in Long beach. Sold it with the house.

In our NY apartment, we had an old refrigerator. It wasn't self-defrost. The insides died, piece by piece, the supports for the shelves broke off. We didn't qualify for a replacement without a raise in rent. I made do by positioning Sterilite drawers in a checker pattern in the entire refrigerator. Defrosting was a nightmare. Finally the super agreed to scavenge a better one (with shelves and self-defrost)from recently vacated apartment. And you were saying?

I don't have that problem here--something goes wrong it is fixed immediately--a/c went out Monday--got a new one today--didn't cost me a penny!

Sending sympathy. Now I'll be walking around my apartment giving every electronic thing the evil eye lest this be some sort of malfunction virus....

Please pity me while I endure Romney and Sanctimoron robo-calling until the Ohio Primary next Tuesday. Sigh.
