Losing It, Plus the Holiday

Lately I find myself preoccupied and the result is silly little things. On Saturday mornings I take my bone pill. The routine is you must take it when you get up, you can’t lie down afterward for at least half an hour, you must drink a full glass of water with it. And you mustn't eat anything afterwards for half an hour. Sometimes the thought of delaying coffee and toast is so daunting, that I put the pill off for a day. All of this is tiresome, but I make myself do it. The packaging is open-proof so I use a razor blade to release the pill. I can’t drink a full glass of water in one go so it takes me a few minutes to get it all down. I did that. Guh. Then I noticed the pill sitting on the counter. I had done the water without the pill. More water. @#$%^%%$.

I have a slice of pumpernickel toast every morning with my coffee. I will get the butter and no-fat half & half and bread out at the same time. I am eager to put things away and sometimes I put things away when I haven’t used them . This is getting annoying.

Ed and I got invited to Thanksgiving dinner at my ex-boss’s house in Sarasota. He was director of the News Service at The New York Times and hired me away from another division (Times Books). This was great because it was more money and rescued me from a toxic boss. His daughter, Mallory, is coming in from Connecticut to be with her dad and make it a gala day for him. His wife is flying to Connecticut Thanksgiving morning to spend the day with her favorite – you guessed it, the son, who is married and has, gasp, grandchildren. I hate it when a mother favors one child over another. This has been going on since they were little. I met the kids when they were pre-teen.

I am looking forward to this. Since Mallory is flying in the day before, Ed and I offered to bring a Publix cooked turkey and she took us up on that. I also offered to bring stuffing. I will use a prepared mix and am looking for a recipe to add stuff to it. Ed and I had already decided not to do an at-home dinner because the people we would invite aren’t available and because I have neglected the house. It now needs a remedial cleaning or will have to go on life support.

Anyway we are all in agreement on the election -- how refreshing. Rob cast an absentee ballot from the hospital where he was recovering from g.b. surgery. He is a voracious follower of politics and government and reads as many newspapers as he can get his hands on every day. So I expect the conversation to be really interesting. How nice that Mallory called!

Sounds like a good time, I'll be thinking of you on Thursday. My dad's family added oysters to the stuffing and made some without for those who didn't want oysters.

Be adventurous! Use apple juice or orange juice for half the chicken stock!

Chop some celery and saute with the onions. It is not stuffing to me if it doesn't have some cornbread in it and a bit of sage.

Sounds like a perfect combo--good food and friends.

Sounds like great conversation around that meal, jeez, with I could be part of it. And, it's always good to drink a lot of water anyways...

Your Thanksgiving sounds like it will be wonderful. Lots of good food and great conversation.

The things one adds to stuffing mix are as varied as family traditions. Some people add chestnut puree, others choose apples and onions. Some use cranberries and chopped vegetables. My mom used currants and celery with sage for her cornbread stuffing. I use apple juice instead of butter or oil. Some years I use jicama instead of chestnuts or pecans, they being cheaper. I often add chicken stock instead of water, because the current thinking is that the stuffing inside a turkey doesn't cook long enough to cook the eggs one adds. I make stuffing in cupcake pans, bake for about an hour, then brown for maybe 5 minutes under the broiler. The top is crunchy, the insides yummy. The thing is, stuffing is very forgiving. Every family and every person does it differently. I do something different every year. Just go for it!

My wife is already planning her Thanksgiving Day menu, it's one of the few days out of the year that she invades MY kitchen. Of course she makes the mess and I get left to clean it up..is it fair?? No..but then again neither is being married sometimes

My mom (90 years) and I haven't been invited to any of the extended family's Thanksgiving dinners as of today. For the past couple years a cousin called early in November and invited us. I usually bake a pie or something to contribute. Now I'm wondering, should I call them, or should I "wing it" and go on waiting? If we don't get the invite from them, one of Mom's younger brother's wives usually calls a few days before the holiday with their invitation. If none do it, I'll have to take her to a restaurant that day. Hmmm? What would you do? (I realize you are not Emily Post, but...)

That sounds like a wonderful way to spend Thanksgiving and not a lot of work or preparation. My Dad used to make stuffing with roasted chestnuts in it. Oh my goodness, I can just taste it now. YUM!
