Despite my solitary lifestyle, I don't exclude myself from the rest of the world.
I read the newspaper, watch television, go online, listen to the radio, get out of the house, etc.
However.
I'm cognizant of living in another world sometimes.
Out of desparation, I tuned in to "The People's Choice Awards" last night, primarily because I'm in love with Kelly Kuoco (from Big Bang Theory) who hosted.
Except for a handfull of entertainers, I hardly knew a soul. Who are these people? The music and "entertainment" was pathetic (according to my taste), so the sound remained muted throughout. I do that with ballgames, too. I can't tolerate the insipid commentary. And, I have discontinued watching/listening to MSNBC with their non-stop, repetitive Republican candidate slamming. It gets old fast.
So, while the TV was on, but muted, I read my new library book. I got to thinking about how good it was, and how much I was enjoying reading it. (The book is "Old School", by Tobias Wolff, but that's immaterial.)
My thoughts evolved into how I actually am of the "old school". I don't do TV or movies, don't own any modern hand held devices (cell phones, etc.), no DVD player, flat screen, skype, or anything like that. I'm not "making a statement", and I'm not "anti" new age technology. I'm just not interested. (And I'm not a fuddy duddy!)
My hometown library is huge, but I was the only patron in sight (yest.). I believe newspapers will soon be a thing of the past. I'm not lamenting that prediction. I'm just saying that when my generation bites the dust, "old school" ways will vanish. Progress. That's okay--in fact, that's good.
I just live in another world, realize and accept it, and continue to enjoy my little universe. It's not all bad.
