Worlds Apart

Despite my solitary lifestyle, I don't exclude myself from the rest of the world.
I read the newspaper, watch television, go online, listen to the radio, get out of the house, etc.

However.

I'm cognizant of living in another world sometimes.
Out of desparation, I tuned in to "The People's Choice Awards" last night, primarily because I'm in love with Kelly Kuoco (from Big Bang Theory) who hosted.

Except for a handfull of entertainers, I hardly knew a soul. Who are these people? The music and "entertainment" was pathetic (according to my taste), so the sound remained muted throughout. I do that with ballgames, too. I can't tolerate the insipid commentary. And, I have discontinued watching/listening to MSNBC with their non-stop, repetitive Republican candidate slamming. It gets old fast.

So, while the TV was on, but muted, I read my new library book. I got to thinking about how good it was, and how much I was enjoying reading it. (The book is "Old School", by Tobias Wolff, but that's immaterial.)

My thoughts evolved into how I actually am of the "old school". I don't do TV or movies, don't own any modern hand held devices (cell phones, etc.), no DVD player, flat screen, skype, or anything like that. I'm not "making a statement", and I'm not "anti" new age technology. I'm just not interested. (And I'm not a fuddy duddy!)

My hometown library is huge, but I was the only patron in sight (yest.). I believe newspapers will soon be a thing of the past. I'm not lamenting that prediction. I'm just saying that when my generation bites the dust, "old school" ways will vanish. Progress. That's okay--in fact, that's good.

I just live in another world, realize and accept it, and continue to enjoy my little universe. It's not all bad.

Amen! My thoughts precisely!

You earned the right to make your world and shape your life the way you want it, and can welcome whatever you want into it. I do think you'd enjoy skyping with your far flung kids. It's a lot of fun, and so cheap it's unreal.

Thanks. As for skyping, it's like the telephone for me: I just don't like doing it. My kids understand.

I love MSNBC.

Better than all the rest, for sure. I'm just tired of politics.

The last time I watched an awards show on TV was when George C. Scott didn't show up to collect his Oscar for "Patton."
comment by jondude on Jan 12, 2012 5:55 PM ()
I remember that. Like I said, I only "watched" because of Kelly and lack of anything else. More so than ever, television is the "vast wasteland".

It's a shame that newspapers are on their way out, yet we still have a need for newspaper itself -- for wrapping, for cleaning windows, for pressing leaves/flowers, and lots more.

But don't forget that have have and use a computer and the internet, and GASP! you BLOG! That makes you more advanced than most of your generation.

My kids had something to do with that. They needed one for school. Otherwise, who knows if I would have "succombed"! I do like it, however.
Hope you're "hanging in there".

I missed the first hour of People's Choice and went back later to scan through it. (DVR) We are not the People, that is the thing of it. Desirable demographic is 18-35. Even my children are over the hill, according to the advertisers. We are too set in our ways to change to new products.

Nail hit on the head! We're not in the marketable demographic age bracket--except on the nightly news! I mute all those commercials, too.

As long as you are happy...

Yes. Happy to be alive!! I could stand to have more "euphoric" moments, but, overall, life is good.

well,I am not sure that this is all about. Not sure what your looking for etc.
I think that you should get away from your negative thinking.
If you loved or hate it,well that is up to you. What are you looking for?
Seemed that you are all in yourself. You need to get there when you can.
You say that you are happy but still get this negative feeling from you.
I supposed if you are happy there, well let it be.
Fest up and enjoy life.I will send you a bill later. The doctor is out now. Will be in tomorrow.

You don't understand, my friend. I AM happy! But I just like to complain or criticize. It's my nature. Never totally satisfied. Here at mybloggers, we have our movie critics (Martin and Dale), book critics (Jeri and A.J.), art critics (Jon, Dottie), political critics (Teal and Redimpala), and so on. Heck, I've even read YOUR criticisms (on fat, out of shape people). I consider myself just as "all purpose" critic--nothing escapes me! Being that I live alone, blogging is my way of discussing my feelings and observations. It makes me feel better. You'll just have to accept me the way I am.

Hey as long as you are happy in your world that's really all that matters. I really like the idea of the newspaper, but I can't stand how gross your hands get when you read it. I used to work for Gannett (probably best known for USA Today) and I worked in the Newspaper division. I hated handling them on a daily basis! I think that might have ruined newspapers for me. I don't get all my news thru my computer though either, so I know I am missing out. When I do pick up a paper I am usually quite interested in what is reported. Wow, this is a long comment. Sorry!

I don't remember reading the newspaper in my young adult life. I think I started when I was in my 30s. I didn't miss it then, so I bet I won't miss it now. My father is still an avid reader--at age 94!

When it comes to "news" you're not missing out on much.
