On the Twelveth Day of Christmas ... ...

Twelve more days 'til Christmas! Not that it excites me as before, but still--CHRISTMAS!  The anticipation, the memories, the traditions!
Here's my list of "favorites".
Color: Royal purple
Decoration:  Candles
Hymn: "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day"
Secular song: Jingle Bells (because I can improvise on it)
Classical song: "For Unto Us a Child is Born" (Handel, from "The Messiah")
Despised song: "Little Drummer Boy" (boring)
Tree topper: Birdie
Xmas Singers (M & F): Mel Torme ("Chestnuts roasting..."); Barbra Streisand (her Christmas album)
Reindeer: Blitzen (Comet a close second)
Story/poem: "T'was the Night Before Christmas"
Movie: "The Christmas Story" (with Ralphy and his Red Ryder BB gun)
TV animation: Charlie Brown Christmas (classic, right?)
Dinner meat: Pot roast (or ham, or turkey, or spaghetti)
Dinner dessert: Pecan pie
Beverage: Red wine (not selective)
Snack Treat: Fudge (any chocolate for that matter)
Childhood Gift: Bicycle
Adulthood Gift: My grandmother's piano five years ago (from my dad, but from my mother's side of the family)
Best "Santa Claus": Big John, a friend who visited my children on Christmas eve.
Memorable moment: When Santa Claus (my grandfather) came marching down the street, paused and pondered, then came into our house with a sack of toys.
Outdoor Activity: Sledding on "killer hill" (Ha!)
Best "12 Days of Christmas": Lords aleaping
Yes or No: Tree?  No      Cards?  A few        Lights? No
White (snow)? Why not?     Fruit cake? Duh (except from my mother)
Merry Christmas! Your turn. (PS: I was kidding about the spaghetti--I had that last night.)

A Christmas Story was my son Tod's favorite. That stupid leg lamp can be purchased as a lamp or a nightlight, and one year just before he died, I gave Tod the nightlight for Christmas. He thought it was the coolest thing and it was definitely one of his prize possessions. He loved it!

It's quite the iconic figure--legendary, I suppose. Don't buy me one!

Enjoyed your Christmas list. The "Twelve Days of Christmas" is so overdone. I have heard that song so many times that I have learned to thoroughly dislike it.

Amen sister! Like Drummer Boy, it's so repetitive.

I am surprised you don't celebrate the winter solstice instead of Christrmas.

We do it all...very elective in our home. ONE God/Creator..many Paths...

Really big and normal. I didn't have to squint. It was just fine.

I never did like that Little Drummer Boy song. Googling it, I see two different dates for its origin - 1941 or 1957. Either way, I feel like I was 'there' when it first came out, so to me it's a phony tradition. That's how my grandmother felt about Mother's Day - she was there when it was invented.

I probably offended somebody for dissing the song, but, along with anything Kenny G does, I nearly go into convulsions when I hear it. Now you got me wondering exactly when it was written. I did hear Gene Autry's Rudolph yest. at the dentist's office. That takes me back! The dentist responded, "So that's who sings that song. I've heard of him". Too young.

Have you seen the movie Elf? It's a tie now with A Christmas Story...

Oops: A (not The) Christmas Story. Haven't seen Elf.

Hi Ana. Sounds like you're in the spirit! It wasn't until I was an adult that I discovered it was my grandfather dressed up as S.C.! He disguised himself very well. It was in South Bend, snow on the ground, very realistic. It must have been 12 yrs old before I quit believing in S.C.!!! (God soon followed)

P.S. Couldn't you find a smaller typeface? I could still read this. Now I need my eyedrops.

I liked the carols years ago but modern treatments are hackneyed. I don't like constant muzak xmas in the stores. The TV channels in this area are 80% xmas gutted now -- if it's a xmas theme, no matter how bad, someone is airing it. Mostly the stuff is too cute, throw-up cute. I did watch "It's A Wonderful Life" the other night because it is so well done. Call me the grinch if you like. I can handle it.

You know, Harriet, one of the reasons I did this post was because I didn't want to be perceived as a "Scrooge". Like you, there's so much about Christmas (season) that I despise. Music at the the dentist's office and Kmart yesterday just about sent me into the madhouse. At least I didn't hear Drummer Boy! I wish I had said my favorite music was the Alfred Burt Carols. I love them!

I LOVE The Christmas Story!!!!! (You'll shoot your eye out!) Wanna read a GREAT Christmas short story - Truman Capote's "A Christmas Memory". Good stuff.
comment by hayduke on Dec 13, 2010 9:17 AM ()
I'll look it up. Maybe it's on the internet. I haven't seen "A Christmas Story" listed in the TV section yet. Gotta watch it--tradition. I read the book, too. The location is Northern Indiana where I grew up (9 yrs worth), so it's very real to me!

Another vote for Capote's "Christmas Memory"! Plus I also love Dylan Thomas' "A Child's Christmas in Wales" — wonderful!

There are way too many "favorites" I could have listed. Since I wrote this, I've changed my mind several times! Fruity, eh? Good one!

It's small on my screen.Since I am the first to comment (oh, the pressure!) I think I'll copy this onto my blog. Might be fun.p.s.I also adore Raphie.
comment by juliansmom on Dec 13, 2010 7:22 AM ()
That's the plan--copy and respond. So I'm confused. Did your copy come out small like this, or normal?
reply by solitaire on Dec 14, 2010 5:33 AM ()
I think I need another cup of coffee...it's NOT small on my screen.
