Taking Stock

As usual, recent news knocks me down. I'm upset about the death of a probable innocent man. Americans are barbarians. The majority of us support the death penalty (not me).

Then, the stock market--and my IRA, etc. I live comfortably enough on Social Security and a modest teacher pension, but we're talking years down the road, when I may need the money for a retirement community. Those aren't cheap. I don't worry, but am concerned about the recession/depression deepening and extending for years to come. It's not only personal, but nationally disturbing.

This leads to politics and what the candidates are saying and doing. I can't imagine any of the Republicans running for president becoming our president. There's something about Romney's personality I don't like. Perry scares the bejabbers out of me. And Bachman is a shrill witch.

I'm happy to see the Iranians freed our two Americans. Of course, it was all because Ahmadinejad wanted to look good at the UN.

The Pope warns the Germans not to ignore religion. Gee, what a shock. Like my bumper sticker says, "Imagine no religion". What a better world we would have.

On a lighter note, did you catch the season premier(s) of Big Bang Theory? So well written and acted. Hilarious.
And the baseball playoffs are coming up. I won't miss watching them by going on my trip or having minimum DISH network coverage. Baseball is so boring.

Have a great weekend. Remember to smile!

Randy, a long time ago AJ (lunarhunk) was appointed OFFICIAL WORRIER for mybloggers--are you trying to get him fired? Stop worrying!

I am Canadian. I pay about as much attention to American politics as Americans pay to Canadian politics. Therefore, posts like these go over my head because I don't know who you're talking about, what the current event was, etc.

It was a compliment.

Yes, things are dicey these days. After I do what I can each day to stay informed and fight for need change and the end of the GOP loony tunes, the only solution for me is to titrate repeated exposure to the endless frustration. We have to stay involved and aware, but balance keeps one sane. As for the hikers, who may or may not have actually crossed the Iran border while hiking in the Iraq mountains, Iran made $1.5 million in "bail." At that rate, hikers will be kidnapped right and left. Not the wisest place to go for a walk....

True. There's a lesson to be learned here (hikers in Iran or Korea or China...). Always beware. Like deer jumping out in front of your car. Complacency can be dangerous--period!

American politics, I ignore.
I'll have to watch Big Bang Theory and see if I like it.

Like so many TV shows, if you don't watch from the beginning, you might not understand the premise or characters. And, of course, "to each his own". I have no idea if you'll like it. I sort of doubt it.

During baseball playoffs, I try to watch the last few innings in case it turns out to be a close game with a dramatic finale. But watching alone, I miss being able to say 'what the heck are they talking about?' and have him explain that particular arcane rule the announcers are discussing in far too much detail.

When I had ESPN, etc., if a game was on (any sport), I thought I HAD to watch it (like watching a crash or tsunami). Now, out of sight, out of mind. I probably wouldn't miss the computer if I didn't have one.

I do the same thing, Laura, with baseball and football. Maybe we both should call Jondude at times like that.... Hey, Jon, what are they going on about?

You forgot to mention the satellite pieces falling to earth. The sky is falling, the sky is falling! Both Big Bangs were great last night. I won't miss baseball either.

I was hoping for a spectacular light show. But it was cloudy anyway! TBS has 2 hours of Big Bang reruns tonight! I missed the first season or two. I usually don't watch sitcoms.

I still have one question about the kids detained for 2 years in Iran:
Hiking in Iraq? Were they out of their f**king minds? How about having a 10k run over in the east end of Afghanistan? Or a nice Bar Mitzvah party over by that nuclear power station in Japan?
I have to laugh at the hubris.

True, but like I said to Redwolf, danger lurks everywhere. It's a risky world out there.

No comments I think you covered it all very nicely.
We are getting hit but do not worry they will saved us.
They?I dunnoSee you soon.

I don't know WHO is going to "save us". I think I'm going to have to save myself, somehow. One more week!

'when I may need the money for a retirement community.' You can always move here unless the Republicans dismantle HUD!!!

Worrying is spending time in the future and that is a waste of time--besides, if nothing else, age has to have taught you that most of the things you worry about don't come to pass and those that do you couldn't do a thing about!

Please, someone at the other site, wants Jed Bush to run!!!!!!
comment by greatmartin on Sept 23, 2011 7:29 AM ()
I admit, I'm somewhat of a "worrier". And a planner--although I like to think of myself as a freewheeler. But thanks for the "advice".

A world without religion would eliminate a lot of war although people can
always find something to fight about. Rick Perry is another Bush in Rick
Perry clothing. He scares me too. Tell us all about your visit with Fredo
and Mike.

I will. Don't want to bore anybody, however. You're still on my list of bloggers to meet someday!
reply by solitaire on Sept 24, 2011 4:56 AM ()
I think that you should blog every single morning just so that I can read you while I drink my coffee. Even when I don't understand the bulk of what you're writing about I enjoy it.
comment by juliansmom on Sept 23, 2011 6:47 AM ()
Thanks, I think. For one thing, I can't come up with something to write about every day. Second, what do you mean you "don't understand the bulk of what I'm writing about"?!!!!!!!!! I think I make myself perfectly clear--usually TOO outspoken!

Stock markets crashing and murders and floods and... yeah, I like my bubble.
comment by kristilyn3 on Sept 23, 2011 6:37 AM ()
Amen. Less TV and newspapers and computer news for me. I'm better off not knowing.

I use to be "pro death penalty" but now I question its effectiveness to be a deterrent of violent crime. As far as those hikers are concerned, if they hadn't been where they shouldn't they'd never got in the trouble they did..plain and simple.
comment by redwolftimes on Sept 23, 2011 6:30 AM ()
However: regarding the hikers, it's sort of like hiking in Glacier NP. A grizzly could be lurking.
