Where Do I Start?

I've got about a dozen things floating around in my head to talk about this Thursday morning.

Let's see, Oprah's final airing? Too maudlin for me, not to mention her constant reference to Jesus, etc. ( I was channel flipping because of the impending tornado watches.)

American Idol finale? Again, I tuned into the 10 PM news/weather advisories, and A.I. was announcing the winner. Big whoop. But those shows sure are popular.

The "upset" in New York? A Democrat won her district's vote for a seat in the House of Reps! Encouraging. And I love Medicare! It paid 100% of my colonoscopy bill (many thousands). Let's do away with war, not medical insurance.

Funeral home visitation? My second cousin (Mom's first) died (90). I "paid my respects" to her family. It's always a mix of emotions at these times. I was happy to see many "distant" relatives on this sad occasion. Many reminisces with long lost--certainly infrequent--connections. Is laughing permissable?

Then, "It was a dark and stormy night". I got in all but the last two holes of golf when the first of several "waves" passed over us. The storm caught up with me as I raced home. Hail and wind and torrential rains confined me to the garage for 15 minutes. I didn't dare dash across the yard to the house/basement. When another (3rd or 4th?) wave came through at 10:30 P, I did head for the basement! Luckily, just wind and rain. No property damage. But I feel sorry for the farmers who just planted crops, now under vast ponds in fields (the seedlings, not the farmers).
I haven't heard from my daughter and their exposed greenhouses. Wind and hail are the enemies. Fingers crossed.

I sort of lost interest in Oprah a while ago, and "American Idol" after the first couple seasons. Maybe checked in occasionally, but no steady viewing. So it goes. The rain has finally stopped, and this morning I spy the first hints of blue sky. We are sick of being soggy here in Northwest Ohio. Can't imagine how far behind our farmers must be....

Just noticed your reply here. Recently planted fields were swamped with water and ponding. I'm lucky I live on a mound. I'm loving this heat--finally, summer is here!! Despite my grousing, I'm enjoying life. I'll email you soon.

Laughter brings healing, and wakes usually include laughter as people reminisce about the humorous moments that endear people to one another.

You are always so astute.

Those last 30 Oprah shows sure went by quickly! I agree about all the Jesus references in the last show - she never talked like that until the very last last show. I'm going to really miss her shows - I didn't watch every single one of them, just the ones I was interested in!

If I saw a promo on a specific show that seemed interesting, I might watch. Otherwise, she catered more to a women's audience. But I always liked her.

I didn't watch any of Oprah's last show(s), not any of American Idol this season, either. If it takes a funeral to bring the extended family together, it's worth it, and laughing is the best part, you wouldn't want to belong to that family that was so uptight they couldn't laugh.

The atmosphere often depends on the circumstances of the death. Usually, tragedy results in a somber funeral. Old age/natural death brings a more upbeat environment.

Glad you are OK. Hope the weekend brings better weather for some more gulf

Thanks. I plan to play more "gulf" today, in fact! That's after I get out the chain saw and cut up the half pine tree that blew over in the storms.

The one thing I completely understood Oprah about was her weight issues--with all her money and help she couldn't/wouldn't stay thin--it is a rough battle to win, harder than not smoking--if you can't be compassionate than at least show some empathy/sympathy!.
comment by greatmartin on May 27, 2011 7:08 AM ()
Admittedly, it's difficult for a skinny guy like me to sympathize with fat people. I'll always maintain it's a matter of will power. Eat less, loose weight, period. "Predisposition", genetics, whatever--a bunch of baloney. No sir, you won't find compassion from me. When people say to me "You're lucky", I respond with "it takes effort and will power, not luck."

It's really sad that families only seem to get together at funerals. My Mother made us promise we would wear red (her favorite color) to her funeral and talk about all the good times we had instead of dwelling on our loss. I did wear red and we did remember all the good times but my heart was broken over my loss. She has been gone for many years but I still miss her and always will.

Same here. Mom's been gone 10 years this August. Doesn't seem possible. But I "see her" everyday on my refrigerator door.

I went to a joyous funeral today. In fact "Joy to the World" was the first
hymn they sang.

A Christmas song--interesting. Since my father is still living, I haven't thought much about my own demise and "funeral". But I want it to be a celebratory occasion.

If I were to have a funeral, laughing would not only be permissible but mandatory.
comment by nittineedles on May 26, 2011 12:27 PM ()
Me too. I'm laughed at while alive, so I might as well be laughed at while dead!

I like American Idol.. R got me into it by watching it all the time and it's entertaining. I can totally understand not wasting your time though!

I like music, but not the A.I. type. Too much pop and country. But it is encouraging to see all the talent out there.

Hopefully to get the garden going over the holiday weekend.
This has been a terrible year so far with all these storms.
People hear complaining about the weather in New England.
Told them stop. You are or we are lucky.
Think about all of those people in the mid west storm.
Your lucky to be alive.Stopped it.That shuts them out.
Hope that things will quiet down .

I just hope it's nice and warm when I visit your region in October.
By the way, my daughter and SIL's organic farm/greenhouses were spared. Maybe there is a god!! (not)

Mother Nature sure is getting us for hurting her land.
I stopped watching Oprah about15-20 years ago--I give her credit for what she accomplished but I found her boring.
The last funeral/wake I went to was in 1982 when I made up my mind never again.
And yes I love Medicare, too--it has been a life saver for me--I hate to think what I would have paid for my aorta valve replacement--I didn't even get/see a bill!
comment by greatmartin on May 26, 2011 6:57 AM ()
Believe me, I seldom watched Oprah. I got disgusted with her weight issues. Anyway, thanks for your comments.

No planting here. Only 30 percent of the corn is in. Probably a total loss with all the rain and the shorter season. Forget planting soybeans, because the seed rots in wet soil.
comment by jondude on May 26, 2011 6:09 AM ()
It's a disaster here. My garden appears spared--muddy, but no standing water. I'm hoping for golf this PM.

The best wakes are when people reconnect and reminisce and laughter is welcome. It eases things. What a terrible year for weather, although our area so far has been spared. Like Great Martin, I wonder what the hurricane season here will bring. Hang in there kiddo.
comment by tealstar on May 26, 2011 6:08 AM ()
While possibly improper, "a good time was had by all". When my mother died, we held a "celebration gathering". Same will be true for father. No public mourning.
