Raspberry Season!

(Let's try this again--grrr)

For several years now, I can't eat cereal without a berry of some sort in every spoonful--either fresh or frozen. This is the time of year where I'm in heaven with fresh red and black raspberries.

While I have plenty of bushes right in my yard and garden, I need to go to the "wilds" to gather enough of the little beauties to keep me through the year (frozen).

Twice this past week, I picked black raspberries back in the "boonies"--once from my farm land, once from down the road on an abandoned farm property.

Yesterday, I donned long pants and a long-sleeved shirt, and with bucket attached, rode my bicycle two miles down the rode to a newly discovered patch. It rained on me for only 5 minutes, enough to get me soaked.

As soon as I started picking, mosquitoes voraciously attacked. I had forgotten my "Off". The patch was weedy and, of course, "stickery". I found a stick to push aside the thorny bushes and weeds, and to see better the berries. Still, I got stuck and scratched many times--even bled.

Despite my best efforts, I couldn't avoid the poison ivy. It was everywhere. There must be a law of nature that says P.I. always accompanies ripe fruit. I'm sure I wiped my face with oil on my hands. And I had to pee! No way was I going to take a chance on infecting my private parts. I've been there, done that!

Wet, bitten, scratched, tired (I had already walked 6 miles of golf), I rode home with about 3 quarts of raspberries. I immediately shed all clothes and jumped in the shower (and peed!). Now, I await to see if indeed I start to itch all over my body (besides the mosquito bites).

Is it worth it? You bet! One bite this morning affirmed it.
Now, let's see if this gets posted. Have a great weekend!

I have several berry bushes - red raspberries, "yellow" raspberries which actually red - maybe they will be yellow this year?, saskatoon/service berries, red current, mongolian cherry, buffalo berry, strawberry. Neighbours just planted a large number of sea buckthorn and said I could pick them too since they will have more than they can use.

Oh, and some other currents and gooseberry bushes that aren't doing well and never have more than a few berries on it.

Smart move not to pee! My ex got poision ivy on his private parts. Considering he had no interest in touching me by that point in our marriage, I thoroughly enjoyed his misery.

Funny. So far, I'm itch free.

Picked yourself berries always taste best!

I prefer them right off the vine, but I resist the temptation. I hope they grow up north where you are.

Chiggers stay with me for at least two weeks. I HATE them! It's not the subject of your post, but it's the part that resonated with me.
comment by jerms on June 27, 2011 8:24 AM ()
And chiggers weren't even mentioned in the actual post--just the comments.

Is that a blueberry pox or a strawberry pox? I am very particular with what poxes I accept!
comment by greatmartin on June 26, 2011 7:57 AM ()
The chiggers wouldn't be worth it to me. I would have to spend what I
saved on cortisone shots and a dose pak.

I didn't realize chiggers could cause so much harm. They just aggravate me for 3-4 days. They are little devils. I'd love to get you and Laura to come visit so you could sample some of my delightful berries.

Mosquito-bite medicine: Tap a little Vicks VapoRub on the tip of each bite as it begins to swell, or if it already has swollen and stings, a bit more than a finger tip full. Don't rub. The bite will stop itching and if it is painful, the pain will mostly go away. This works for me.

And either fingernail polish or remover (??) dabbed on poison ivy--or so they say. Does Vicks work on chiggers, I wonder? Got them, too!

I'm picturing the misery of poison ivy on the private parts!!

I figure a lot of athletes have poison ivy in their crotch, as much as they scratch!

I love puffed rice with red raspberries, something about those flavors together, or in the case of the rice, non-flavor. Mr. YouKnow is severely allergic to poison ivy, we found out the hard way, and I might be immune to it at this time (can come and go).

P.I. is ubiquitous, for sure. I've had my share of it over the years. So far, so good on this romp through the nasty stuff.

You're willing to suffer for your pleasures I see. Next time don't forget the Bug Off and spray your clothes too. Fresh berries wonderful. I just get mine in the market.

Did you see my response to Fredo? Now, I have to search for a new patch of blackberries, since the farmer owner sprayed and killed my old thicket.

Let's see--the past few blogs you have been giving the USA and its people the raspberries and now you are moaning and groaning about getting raspberries--boy I hope when I get old I don't complain about so much!!!

Well maybe if you eat a few more berries you'll get a sweeter disposition!
comment by greatmartin on June 25, 2011 7:48 AM ()
A sweeter disposition? NEVER! And a pox on you! (Just kidding, of course.)

When I went to Aldi's the other day, I noticed a little pint of red raspberries was selling for $2.50!!!!!!!!! So not only is the taste worth the effort of self-picking, but the price definitely is!
