Running for President

After seeing the latest poll results from Iowa, it occurred to me that "running for president" is not what it should be.

Are any of these presidential candidates "drafted" into running? I don't think so. I see no "ground swell" for Romney or Bachman or Gingrich or Huntsman or even Palin to become our national leader.

Very few men became presidents based on pre-presidential popularity. Dwight Eisenhower was perhaps the last to be drafted and elected on the grounds of his military heroism. I can think of only George Washington, U.S. Grant, and perhaps Theodore Roosevelt before that, that were "called to duty". None of them actually declared candicacy. They were urged, by popular demand, to run for president.

What is it about our current candidates that makes them want to "showboat"? Ego? Ignorance? Do any of them really think they would be a great leader? I just can't imagine.

Do we have any national heroes anymore? Are there any standouts available in this day and age? Probably the closest thing we could get is a sports or entertainment figure, but I can't see Oprah or Lady Gaga or LeBron James being drafted for president of the United States.

Nobody has asked me to run for anything more than Lions Club president. I'm only a hero in my own house. But if there is a groundswell....... (thumbs up).

Have to sort of answer your thoughts on a glass and its contents: Describing your glass as half empty is a negative thought. Describing it as half full is a positive one. It indicates that you are either a pessimist or an optimist. Empty, empty, you think, oh, woe is me. Almost full, you think -- good things will happen. Hope I have been helpful. I say about Ed, his glass is always empty ... more than that, he wasn't ever given a glass. If he had one, it would be on another planet. Or, alternatively, I might say to him, of course your glass is empty, you keep punching holes in the bottom.

Thanks. Although I already knew the meaning, I really meant that I don't use the metaphor. Cliches, like "between a rock and a hard place", or, "six of one, half dozen of another", sort of turn me off. I had to laugh at your assessment of Ed!

I see your glass is still half empty. I'm not a Pollyanna, but there is so much wrong with the world and our country that I cannot change that I chose to focus on what's right. That is how I survive. As a victim of all that is evil and depraved, I likely would have killed myself years ago were I not able to stay focused on all that is right and good.

I consider you a realist--nothing bad about that. As for me thinking the "glass is half empty", I never have completely understood that phrase.

The urge to run for most people has nothing to do with the impulse to "serve". It's more that they want the power and think they can succeed because they are surrounded with their admirers, not realizing that when they step out of that comfort zone, the rest of the country is not that thrilled with them.

They are illusionists, living in a fantasy world.
