Queen Size

I gotta tell you, it's been nice to sleep in my own bed all week! While I enjoy camping, living out of a tent is really not living.

My 3 person tent is good for only one person--even a little guy like me. I mean, after you store all your gear in it, saving room for sleeping space, there's little left over. 3 person?--maybe, if you have no gear and are under 5'9".

The ground is never perfectly flat--usually tilted. And never smooth. Inevitably, there's a stone or stick or hump, right under where you feel it the most. An air mattress helps, but only if it's 3-4" thick. Then your sleeping bag slides off of it, and you wake up in the middle of the night thinking "what the hell?" (or "Where am I?")

Camping noises: animals don't really bother me--frogs, birds and such. Mosquitoes in the tent, yes. But we had raccoons prowling about, with them fighting several nights. We all thought they were mountain lions! It was terrifying.
But animal noises aren't as bad as people noises.

Slamming car doors, locking doors with their remote which honks the horn (Oh, how I hate that!). Zipping and unzipping tents, walking about, perhaps to the bathroom (and allowing the door to slam shut). And snoring. THAT really bothers me! Earplugs don't help in shutting out loud snoring. Luckily, for once, this trip didn't have any snorers.

It's cold at night. I'm snuggled in my sleeping bag, and I have to pee. NOOOOOOOOOO! At home, no problem. Camping, I have to get out of the bag and tent, put on shoes (and maybe clothes), and traipse to the potty (often foul smelling). Or the bushes, if available. What a hassle.

I never sleep well when tenting. When I finally fall into a rare deep sleep, it's time to "rise and shine". Breakfast duty awaits. Crap. It's 35 degrees at 6 AM, and I don't want to get dressed and leave my sleeping bag. Double crap.

Did I mention rain? Yep, it did, and yep, my tent insides and sleeping bag got wet. No matter how hard one prepares to stay dry, it's never enough.

And every time I go camping, I say, "This is the last time". But, for some unexplainable reason, I'm a glutton for punishment. I guess it makes me appreciate my queen size bed all the more!

That beep that vehicles make when you lock/unlock doors is very annoying! My new vehicle doesn't beep.

I know what you mean about tent sizes. I upgraded years and years ago to a 4 person plus gear tent (I think, it was a long time ago.) The floor space is 7'x7'. Lots of room for 2 with gear, nicely cosy for me and the kids. The last time we used it, it rained all night. We stayed dry, but in the morning we realized the bottom of the tent was full of water - but the mattresses kept us above it!

I used to go camping and after years of tents and all of the things you mentioned, we bought a pop-up. They are like mini motels on wheels and the beds are fairly comfortable too. With no more hotel bills and our food bill cut in half, we could finally afford to take the kids on the vacations we always dreamed about.

I kike camping when there is running water nearby... but MAN do I understand that having to pee after being comfy in your sleeping bag night mare. Bleh!!! But it's fun for a few days usually.

Six nights is a little too much for this old man anymore. Who needs it?

Thank you for reminding of all the reasons I refuse to go camping!!!

I was thinking of you when I wrote this!

camping is what you make it. You can plan it to overcome all those negatives, choose your camp-site, prepare your gear adequately and you shouldnt have any hassles. I love it.

Great! A fellow camper lover! Despite my rant, I'll be back in the tent before long. I love the outdoors.

I would have been okay with camping before I needed so many things to keep me together. Just going to New York for four days (that I did recently) took me weeks of brooding over how to pack everything I would need and where to put it to avoid having it confiscated at the airport.

You have expertly expressed my sentiments with regard to camping.Give me a king size bed in a luxury resort and I'll be happy.

I'm likely to become more like you. We'll see. Thanks for dropping by.

When my daughter was little, I was an outdoor skills resource person for the girl scouts. We went to the girl scout camp where we slept in platform tents. Floors and cots. Indoor showers and toilets. We did cook on the ground over a campfire so we did rough it a little. There is nothing like washing mybloggers spaghetti sauce covered pans in warmish water, though. My daughter hates camping and the outdoors now. My son loves the outdoors, as do I. Except for ticks.

All my kids want to go on a trip with me for some strange reason. Alas, my camping days are rapidly coming to an end. Now you know why!

I didn't spend enough time on my trailer last summer. We took it to 4C-Camp for Adults in August and I felt like I was sleeping in a strange bed. Needless to say, I slept like crap. But I'll get it right this year!

I camped out plenty in my Army training days.
The pup ten is so small and hardly move around.
With plenty of ticks to keep you company.
When in civilian life .Camp one time with my son in the scout and hated it.
It was cold, uncomfortable, like you say, lump and bump.
This was the last time for me.So good bye camping and give me the real life

I forgot to mention ticks (and snakes)! We had them. When I get as old as you, perhaps I'll get wiser and quit this foolishness!

I really have to wonder why you like to do this to yourself. And you must like to put yourself through this or you wouldn't do it. You must get some payoff somewhere.

I call it "memory loss". After 6 months, I forget the bad and get caught up in the adventure/wanderlust.

Your descriptions of camping do not make it sound inviting. As a kid, I have been to regular camp with little buildings and regularly cleaned latrines. That's my kind of camp. Except, of course, for the religious crap they all feel they have to offer. I have been using a remote car door device for years. When I click it to open it, no sound at all. When I click it to lock the doors, a tiny, tiny little beep, beep. The only time there's a problem is to get a siren if one has left the car unlocked and then opens the door without clicking.

Reminds me of one of my camping trips. We were in the middle of a wolf mating ground....... nuff said! The kids were so scared they slept in the truck and left me all alone in the tent...

Once, while my kids (and wife) slept in the car, I was in a sleeping bag outside when a pack of dogs inspected me. Yes, I was frightened.

Do wolves attack humans when they are not threatened? Bears will. I'd be more afraid of them.

I have not 'camped,' owned a tent, or traipsed through the boonies since I got out of the US Army. It was a promise I made to my body that day.
