Is MyBloggers Dying?

I've been somewhat discouraged lately with the situation here at MyBloggers.com.

As many of you know, our founder, Eddie, split from Blogster to start this site. Quite a few of us dissatisfied bloggers emigrated to mybloggers.

While I haven't regretted moving over, I'm not happy with what I see as a common occurance: "newbies" dropping out as fast as they arrive. If I do see a new face, I try to make friends by reading and welcoming him/her. But I get ignored. Then, they're gone forever. What's with that?

Not only that, we keep losing familiar faces (Do I need to list them?). Some "friends" suddenly disappear, without warning or explanation. Poof, gone.

I realize the "competition" is fierce, especially with Facebook and Twitter. It appears that those social networks are dominating and taking over the time spent on blogging sites such as this one. At least I'm guessing this is so.

I really appreciate all of "survivors" that have stuck with us. I enjoy my (our) core group of mybloggers-ites. Many, however, have left, for one reason or another. The base is shrinking. And no "rookies" have replaced them. This can't continue.

If someone posts an article, and no one reads it (or comments), it's little wonder that blogger feels like he's peeing against the wind. Getting no response for his (her) efforts would cause one to get discouraged. And how often I have commented on a post, only to be ignored.

If you're going to get involved with a project, get involved with the project! You can't play a round of golf by playing only one hole. And if you decide you can't or don't want to play anymore, don't just stomp off the course. Don't keep us guessing. And for the "part-timers", either s**t, or get off the pot. I get tired of your shenanigans. I don't like ghosts in the night.

My patience is wearing thin with the aforementioned crowd. For the "hard-core" bloggers, and you know who you are, thank you. Keep those posts a-coming and those comments frequent. I know you're out there. MyBloggers needs you. Otherwise, we're doomed.

OK, you can relax Randy. It only seemed like no one was blogging but I'm back now.

I get on my high horse sometimes. Blame it on the long winter. I'm really a happy-go-lucky guy, but I guess I got a burr up my butt. You were never "on my list".

First, let me say sorry for snapping at you. As a part-time blogger, your rant message seemed aimed in my direction. I appreciate knowing that wasn't your intention. That said, try to remember that people blog for lots of reasons and in many ways. There is no mold, just an open forum. Sorry you're frustrated, but I encourage you to get over it. If you expect people to fit into your mold, you'll be endlessly disappointed. Peace.
comment by marta on Apr 2, 2011 7:29 PM ()
Apology accepted. As far as "fitting a mold": in case you haven't noticed, I'm a "horse of a different color". Many people, including my own family, think I'm "weird"--at least odd man out. And, I speak my mind. One thing I strive for, however, is to respect other peoples' opinions. I'm not always good at it, but I try. Conversely, I would hope others respect my opinions. This blogging format allows us all the freedom of expression, both in writing a post and in commenting to/on others. I realize I've stepped on some toes (putting it mildly), but I'm not one to "stuff it". I say what I think. I live what I believe. Again, I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings. It certainly was not my intention as I never thought of you when I I wrote this.

Sometimes I have a good book going or a good movie to watch but perish the
thought that we should lose our blog spot. It means a lot to me. Surely
Fredo will be back to blog about his trip. No facebook for me, I have
outlived almost all my friends.

I'm in the same boat (except unmarried). I have a life. Blogging is only one aspect of it. It's therapeutic for me to write about my life and thoughts. I would certainly miss doing it. There's always Blogster! But I think one of my main points is: in order to have others read ones posts, one must be involved in their posts. Maybe I'm being "selfish", but it irritates me that someone in Mississippi writes, but never reads (or comments) on any other blogs.

I just don't have the time I did before - when the kids were young, I was home, bored, so I played on the computer. Now that they are older, I've filled my days and don't have the endless spare time to spend on the internet.
comment by crazylife on Apr 1, 2011 8:06 PM ()
We understand. At least you don't disappear off the face of the earth. You may change your name, but not evaporate! Your name, Crazylife, says it all! Once every week or two would be sufficient to keep us posted. I care.

Randy, I guess I am one of the "part-timers" you are railing about and I apologize for not posting. My husband went through about 6 weeks of an extremely stressful time at work and it caused a ferocious outbreak of shingles that drove him to the doctor...that is a miracle within itself and I just stayed off the computer. My life is so routine, everyday I get up go to work, come home very tired, go to bed and start all over the next day. Who the heck wants to read about that?? I do enjoy reading all the blogs and make comments. I'll try to be more of a regular in the future and not a part-timer.

Nancy, Nancy, Nancy. I was never ever referring to you (or anybody in particular). You've kept us informed about your situation. I understand and don't fault or criticize you. Heck, I'm retired, but sometimes don't have the time or passion to write/read blogs. I will soon be ratcheting down my computer time, due to summer activities. But, like you, I'll be forwarning readers of where I'm going or where I've been. Most don't.

The only folks who are going to see this post are the regulars - the ones you need to scold are off in Facebook land blissfully unaware; it doesn't do much good to tell our faithful remnant to stick with the program. There are those spammers from Asia who come to MyBloggers one or two times with fake posts about a certain kind of handbag or hair straightening, or whatever, easily identified by their poor sentence construction and commercial messages. I just ignore their posts; maybe that's wrong. It does irritate me that MyBloggers is broken and will never be fixed. Never mind whistles and bells, I'd like to be able to modify my banner as promised.

You might be surprised at who reads your posts without commenting (see "checkout who"). I do it (like Marg and her knitted socks). But for the most part, you're right. For me, I'm sticking around 'til we go under. I like to "stir the pot" every once in awhile!

MyBloggers will survive or it won't. Nothing we can do about it. Eddie can sell it or close it at his whim. He probably will. Who knows. He already runs it on a shoestring. The point it to enjoy it and our blog friends while it and they are here. Stop being a control freak. Since I fall into your part-time s--t pile apparently, I post based on my schedule or impulse or intuition, not yours. Yeeesh, what a crabass.

Whoa! I struck a nerve, eh? I wasn't aiming at anyone in particular, especially not you. You are a frequent reader and commenter which is much appreciated. What surprises me is, with the talent you have for writing, you do not post often or with any regularity. I thought that was the idea behind blogging: a forum for expressing thoughts and life. My post here was just for that. I didn't mean to come off as a "crabass". Just the facts, m'am.

Ya know, I check in daily but haven't posted for some time. Writers block. And I haven't been leaving comments either.
comment by meranda on Apr 1, 2011 8:22 AM ()
Guilty as charged (by me)! I had such high hopes for you. Funny, witty, sarcastic, different--that's you. But I finally had to drop you from my friends list because you never wrote anything. Come on, Meranda, you can think of many things to write about. I jot ideas down when they come to mind.

Funny, I just decided that I needed to expand my core of friends and am just now discovering some of the 'old timers' that many of you have been friends with for a long time. This nothing like Facebook. That site is too busy and one can remain rather anonymous. They don't write posts. Just one or two line updates. I don't like Facebook. This is 'home'.
comment by dragonflyby on Apr 1, 2011 8:08 AM ()
Unfortunately, I am constantly updating my friends list here. I get tired of scrolling down the list, skipping over those names I know haven't written anything for ages. No sense wasting my time. Let them come to me.

As long as hobbie stays who cares about the others! Happy Birthday Hobbie--and, yes, you have to share your birthday sardines!
comment by greatmartin on Apr 1, 2011 7:46 AM ()
I think Hobbie should reply to this, not me.

I will be around... I don't post as often as I used to but I still love reading what the rest of you are up to! Good point though, here's hoping some of the newbies stick around!!! And I really hope Fredo comes back.
comment by kristilyn3 on Apr 1, 2011 7:23 AM ()
I appreciate your involvement here. I know you're busy--a regular "social butterfly", but you take time to read and comment to posts. At least you don't take 6 month hiatus like some do.
reply by solitaire on Apr 2, 2011 5:31 AM ()
Dear Randy, I hadn't noticed. I pick up new members from those who comment on other blogs but it takes me a while because it's all I can do to keep up with the familiar regulars. But Facebook and Twitter, neither of which I subscribe to, are perhaps spelling the end of all blogging, not just this site. Incidentally, the reason I prefer blogging is that I think Facebook and Twitter are just chat rooms squared and there is no depth to those communications. I like to elaborate on a subject. Have you tried either?
comment by tealstar on Apr 1, 2011 7:19 AM ()
I totally agree with all you say. I do have a Facebook account (by accident), but never use it. I enjoy the intelligent, sometimes stimulating posts and feedback we have here at mybloggers.
