Moving Forward

The United States has taken some giant steps recently in making our world a better place. President Obama and the mostly Democratic Congress is to be commended for their resolve and success in passing legislation that ends "don't ask , don't tell", stops nuclear weapons proliferation, and helps 9/11 responders get health benefits. Glorious!

What this Congress and President has done in the last few weeks could be the start of something grand in our country, something to be proud of. But, alas, I'm afraid it's the beginning of the end. The Republicans are coming to power. The party of "NO" will halt all progress and perhaps rescind accomplishments already set to go, i.e., health care for all Americans.

The political right will again be espousing their mantra of "limited government", with Sarah Palin's signature "Don't tread on me" philosophy. The party that sent our national debt to the ceiling and was responsible for a devastating recession, will soon be at the helm, once again. With what the Democratic Congress has gotten done, it will be interesting to see how their rivals will fare, once in power.

I suspect disaster looms. I can't imagine anything good will come out of a Republican controlled Congress. They have already made life miserable for the President. I predict that in two years, the American public will be screaming, "Off with their heads"! Wishful thinking?

No...it's not you.

I know precious little about American politics and get pretty confused by your system in general and I'm always a little nervous about sounding like an idiot. Hence the .

Case in point...a few years ago, on Blogster, back when I was janetk, an American asked what we Canadians had for Thanksgiving...you know, whether or not we had turkeys in Canada. I'm always scared of sounding like that.

And our system was accurately deemed. It is a socialist system, for the most part. There are some private practices in several provinces and this is a constant debate in Canada. Our system is far from perfect, however, when I had Julian (who spent about two months in intensive care), I received a bill for well over $100,000, just for about five weeks of his stay in one hospital because they hadn't taken his provincial health card. I called, gave them the number and the bill was cleared, plain and simple. When I hear about these debates, that's what I think of and why I end up baffled.

Don't worry about it. Small potatoes compared to what you have to deal with in your life. When I write about national issues, I often forget I have "foreign" readers who may not understand what the hell is going on. You do celebrate Christmas, don't you? Tee hee.

I am extremely happy about the repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell". I believe the Coast Guard was the only branch of the service open to gays serving in the military. The Army and Marines used our involvement in Afghanistan as a reason for not repealing it "at this time". (If not now, then when?) Thank you, Pr. Obama for successfully challenging this most discriminatory policy and going with the voices of the 70% of the 500,000 military members polled who said they had no problem with serving with gays. Health care... those bumps and hurdles are still ahead, but finally! We were the only industrialized nation that did not offer universal health care to its citizens. The statistics about access to healthcare are slanted- the ones that state our citizens receive more healthcare, and receive it faster than countries offering universal healthcare. The figures for the US include only people who have adequate health insurance to begin with! Reminds me of my statistics professor's favorite quote: "Figures don't lie, but liars do figure!"

All this news is most welcome. It may not affect me personally or directly, but just the fact that it's the right thing to do is the important thing.

Sixty two years ago a Welshman, Aneurin Bevan, founded The National Health Service in the UK.
It is still flourishing and I don't believe it will ever stop. It means that 'everyone' - from every 'class' or culture have the same right to medical attention! This is good
I sincerely hope that President Obama succeeds with this venture

I know of three children of mine that could use a national health plan! My son has nothing and a daughter pays out the wazoo for hers.

I think Obama has learned a bit more these last few weeks about how to deal with Republicans. I think he will be tougher.

I was a little disgusted and frustrated by his "inaction" at times. But he's a "steady as she goes" type person. Patience is a virtue.

Glad to hear a little glimmer of good. I lose patience with those people who voted for Obama and now say they no longer believe in him. It's going to take a long time to straighten out the mess our economy is in, and I don't think he's going to get much of a chance.

I'm with you. I used to think most people were stubborn in their beliefs. But polls indicate they change their minds frequently, like on presidential approval rates. What was it at last check--43%? After what was accomplished this past week, it may be up 10%. Who knows?

Let's hope the Republicans storm and glower and the Dems are able to
keep health care for all our sakes.

Glower is a good word to describe the "bad guys". They DO do that. We'll see how it all plays out soon enough.

Give them their fifteen minutes of fame. That's all they'll get.

Gee, I wish (only 15')!! I keep saying I'm going to stay out of politics, but something pulls me in. Perhaps it's concern for my country and its citizens.

I deeply resent the partisanship in Washington and the sheer nastiness of GOP tactics this year.
comment by dragonflyby on Dec 23, 2010 9:44 AM ()
I think there are many of us that feel the same way. I loathe their "no compromise" stand. What a bunch of stubborn bastards.

the president came out smelling like a rose in this year end.
But your right. The Republican is going to give him a hard time.
I am not looking forward to this.I have a hard time in typing the Republican.
Merry Christmas..Jojo?never heard about the teaart am I missing something?

Teaart is a new blogger. Nobody reads (or comments) his blogs. Perhaps he doesn't read anybody else's. I like his wisdom.

They are not assuming 'power.' The Party of No will only control The House. There are enough votes in both houses to kill their legislation as well as a Presidential veto to stop the idiocy.

True. I guess I was generalizing too much. The Senate may make new rules on Jan. 5th, first day back. We'll see if something hits the fan.

The health care issue, for me, has always been baffling but I guess it's because I've never known any system other than the Canadian one and am not that familiar with American politics.

I really need to stop blushing on your blog.
comment by juliansmom on Dec 23, 2010 6:59 AM ()
Blushing? Do I cause embarrassment? Your Canadian health care program was mentioned several times during our "debates". It was deemed "socialistic". Sounded good to me. We need a little more "socialism" in America.
