The United States has taken some giant steps recently in making our world a better place. President Obama and the mostly Democratic Congress is to be commended for their resolve and success in passing legislation that ends "don't ask , don't tell", stops nuclear weapons proliferation, and helps 9/11 responders get health benefits. Glorious!
What this Congress and President has done in the last few weeks could be the start of something grand in our country, something to be proud of. But, alas, I'm afraid it's the beginning of the end. The Republicans are coming to power. The party of "NO" will halt all progress and perhaps rescind accomplishments already set to go, i.e., health care for all Americans.
The political right will again be espousing their mantra of "limited government", with Sarah Palin's signature "Don't tread on me" philosophy. The party that sent our national debt to the ceiling and was responsible for a devastating recession, will soon be at the helm, once again. With what the Democratic Congress has gotten done, it will be interesting to see how their rivals will fare, once in power.
I suspect disaster looms. I can't imagine anything good will come out of a Republican controlled Congress. They have already made life miserable for the President. I predict that in two years, the American public will be screaming, "Off with their heads"! Wishful thinking?
I know precious little about American politics and get pretty confused by your system in general and I'm always a little nervous about sounding like an idiot. Hence the
Case in point...a few years ago, on Blogster, back when I was janetk, an American asked what we Canadians had for Thanksgiving...you know, whether or not we had turkeys in Canada. I'm always scared of sounding like that.
And our system was accurately deemed. It is a socialist system, for the most part. There are some private practices in several provinces and this is a constant debate in Canada. Our system is far from perfect, however, when I had Julian (who spent about two months in intensive care), I received a bill for well over $100,000, just for about five weeks of his stay in one hospital because they hadn't taken his provincial health card. I called, gave them the number and the bill was cleared, plain and simple.
