An Evening with Leo

When my local paper interviews someone, they often ask, "Who would you most like to eat dinner with?" The responses are the usual: Abe, George (either Bush or Washington), MLK, JFK, some sports super star, or Jesus.

Don't we know enough about them already? I have a long list of who I'd like to spend an evening with. A politician or sports figure or religious person isn't on it.

I can think of Charles Darwin or John Wesley Powell or Eratosthenes, a hundred others. But my first choice would be Leonardo da Vinci.

What a genius. He was a man of enormous talents--a man of science AND of art. A rare combination. His inventions far preceded his time: flying machines, submarines, weaponry. And we all know about his paintings: the Mona Lisa, the Last Supper, etc.

I would love to hear his thoughts about every subject from astronomy and anatomy to zoology. My interest in Leonardo began in the fifth grade when my parents took me to an exhibit of his inventions at Purdue. We know much about his accomplishments, but little about his life. Was he gay or just a loner? What were his feeling about humanity? Who was the real Leonardo? Talk to me, my hero.

Hmmmm.... I agreed at first with Leonardo, however, IT would HAVE to be MY COOKING on MY GRILL with MY KNIVES!!! After his nightly trips to the morgue...He had to cut some things up to see what was in there!!! O.K. - I would love to have dined and partied with Andy Warhol. Urinating on copper from a balcony and then seeing the "piece"hung in Pittsburgh, PA...A town he hated...decades later! Sean Connery is dinner wherever, whenever, hopefully in this life! -I won't NEED for anything when meeting "Creator". (I still say Leonardo posed for the Mona Lisa - He was slick! Check out his smirk!! A real woman would have bragged! Leo also has no lower anatomy drawings depicting what's under her fig leaf!!) Pregnancy and embryo stages only....no sex. King Solomon would've been interesting as well! Tough question! O.K. I'll be waiting for response!

I can't pick just one person! I have to have a group of women to dinner, including: Lillian Hellman, Amelia Erhart, Eleanor Roosevelt, Margaret Bourke-White and Mollie Ivins. Good question.

Alexandra David-Néel was a French explorer, anarchist, spiritualist, Buddhist and writer, most known for her visit to the forbidden (to foreigners) city of Lhasa, capital of Tibet (1924). She wrote more than 30 books, about Eastern religion, philosophy, and her travels. Her well-documented teachings influenced the beat writers Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, and philosopher Alan Watts. During her childhood she had a strong desire for freedom and spirituality. At the age of 18, she had already visited England, Switzerland and Spain on her own, and was a student at Madame Blavatsky's Theosophical Society.
My choice for dinner guest.

He is an outstanding pick!! I would love to ask him sooooo many questions as well!

As for a woman, I would have to pick Princess Diana. She was and will always be my most loved and respected female Idol -

I'll bring the pasta and wine if you invite me to join you and Leonardo.
Heck I'll even do the dishes and clean up after.

He was very forward thinking and seemed to be quite astute for his time! I am sure they all thought he was a nutso! HAHA!

I would have to say Catherine the Great.

I suppose one of the first names that comes to my mind would be regarded a political figure: Mahatma Gandhi. His great love of humanity was a wondrous thing, and he inspired so many others. Our Civil Rights movement would not have been possible without his ideas. Then there is Isaac Asimov- oh my gosh! Wish I could have met him. So many great minds....

You aren't going to like my answer... but I would definitely say, Jesus. Although, I think you would probably make for great dinner conversation, too. I guess we just should have a party and invite everyone.

I have no idea who I would pick.

Great choice! For such a remarkable man with such an incredible mind, I'm sure you'd need a few evenings to finish the conversation.

Yeah, he's a good choice. Hmmm. Michelangelo? Maybe. Da Vinci is a really good choice.

Good choice Randi. I am thinking Jerzy Kosinski or Audrey Hepburn.

Good choice! I'll bet he would order the Fettucine Alfredo from the menu. If your wish is granted, ask him about that secret smile in La Giaconda (The Mona Lisa.)
