Eh? What Did You Say?

After suffering the past 5 days with a hearing loss, I went to the doctor today.

I thought I had wax buildup, used "softener" and water wash, but to no avail. It's my "good ear", and now I can't hear worth a ding bust. It's driving me crazy.

Well, the doc says "no wax", ear drum infection. So I'm on an antibiotic which will, if indeed it is an infection, take a week or more to clear up. NOOOO!

If patience is a virtue, I'm going to be the most virtuous person in the world.

There are some benefits to not being able to hear. When I went blueberry picking this afternoon, I couldn't hear some lady's children jabbering and complaining the whole time.

But for the most part, I hope my deafness soon ends.

Canadians are generally well known for the use of the word, eh. It has nothing to do with hearing loss. It is tacked onto the end of any statement and means, "wouldn't you agree?"

I thought you were blogging about moving to Canada. Eh?
comment by nittineedles on July 14, 2010 12:40 PM ()
I'm not sure what hearing loss has to do with moving to Canada, but for many other reasons, it's not a bad idea!

Bummer! It is a bummer to live with a person with hearing loss too. It
is hard to be sympathetic when the tv volume is way too loud.

Still no improvement, AND I'M GOING NUTS!! At least it doesn't bother me when my father has the TV volume way up.

Good luck, Randy. I hope the antibiotics do it for you. If not, make an appt. with an eye, ear, and throat specialist. Not something to let go.

I'll go to a specialist if my regular doctor refers me. It's wait and see right now. I appreciate your concern.

Tis a real pain in the butt when ear troubles come on , even with waxol it takes a few days to soften and remove ---in your case same time ---hope no earache
comment by kevinhere on July 14, 2010 2:56 AM ()
No earaches, thank goodness. Just annoying. I used a lot of "waxol" and warm water flushings, but that doesn't cure an infection. I'm crossing my fingers.

Well, you being you I hafta say, at least it's not permanent.
comment by kristilyn3 on July 13, 2010 10:28 PM ()
It could be permanent, but it's not total. I just have to crank up the TV and radio volume!

Yup, be careful about taking the meds Randy. I have some hearing loss from ear infections and repeatedly-ruptured ear drum on left side. It's a pain!
comment by catdancer on July 13, 2010 10:09 PM ()
Fortunately, there's been no real pain--just the pain you speak of. Can't hear!
reply by solitaire on July 14, 2010 8:28 AM ()
Hope it clears up soon with no complications.
comment by tealstar on July 13, 2010 9:10 PM ()
Thanks, Harriet. I'm fairly concerned, of course.

That would be such a loss to you if for no other reason than not hearing your music. Hope the antibiotic works.

I've discovered playing the piano is unenjoyable. It just doesn't sound right. I'm a little nervous about not improving.

I have lost some hearing due to 'going under' before my aorta operation and life hasn't been the same since! Take your medicine and don't say, "What?" too much!
comment by greatmartin on July 13, 2010 7:21 PM ()
I play golf with a "hard of hearing" fellow, and he is always saying "huh?" It drives me crazy, so I've learned not to be like him. I politely tell people about my problem.

I agree with Fredo, Randy. Be very careful with this infection. If the tiny hairs in the ear or nerve cells are damaged you can develop tinnitus or Menieres. My husband has both and it is a nightmare for him. Good luck with it.

Everyone around here told me I should use the old candle in the ear treatment. Sounds like quackery to me. I chose the Dr. instead! Thanks.

I had this (or something close to it) a few years back. Finally went to the doc the day before we were taking the new camper out for the first time. The pain subsided as soon as the infection went down a bit, and it was more of an annoyance than a big deal after a few days. Good luck with it!
comment by jjoohhnn on July 13, 2010 6:58 PM ()
The good thing is, it doesn't hurt. It's just the loss of hearing that bugs me.

Good luck with the antibiotic. It's strange for your hearing to just go away that fast, so I hope it does cure up. Hot weather here, our nights are finally going to get up to 50 degrees so my garden will like that. We had cold, wet weather last week, hoping for more of that soon.
comment by troutbend on July 13, 2010 5:54 PM ()
Well, it didn't help that I stupidly stuck a Q-tip in the ear to sop up the so-called wax. I'm so angry at myself for doing that.

Keep an eye on this Randy. What is the antibiotic for if you do not have an infection or you do.The hearing is very sensitive do not neglect this.
I know from experience that this happened to me.While in the service and just let it go and yep the damage was done with the hair or nerve cells damaged and got worse as I got older.Had Meniers,German measles etc while serving for my country during the Korea War conflict.Just be on your toes.Good luck.
comment by fredo on July 13, 2010 3:59 PM ()
Yes. My father has suffered from Menier's and vertigo for years. I think it's been the cause of some dizzy spells I've had lately.
