Another Day, Another Dollar (Lost)

When I watched the noon news, the Dow was actually up. Four hours later, it had lost over 500 points! Pretty depressing.
Fortunately, I've been so busy all week, old man stress has stayed away. Again, apologies for not having time to read other posts. I promise to do better in several weeks. (BTW, I keep getting a blank screen at Steve's (looserobes) site. Anybody else having that problem?)

So what's keeping me so busy? The number one priority has been cutting and hauling firewood. Nearly every day after morning golf (yes, another priority), I've gone to the woods and busted my butt. I won't go into details, but you can't always drive your truck right up to the cut wood. I've carried it, rolled it, even wheel-barrowed it. Might have to split the larger chunks before lifting them onto the truck bed. I figured I often pick up a piece of wood 8 times before it actually burns in my stove. Quite exhausting. But I beat the rain before the ground got too wet to get into (and out of!) the woods. I've been stuck before, and that's no fun.

I also made a batch of "freezer" slaw, sliced up a gob of apples to dehydrate (in my new dehydrator), and been gathering/husking black walnuts to crack this winter. On my to-do list is dig sweet potatoes and clean up the garden. So much to do, but if the stock market crashes, I've got heat and food!

I've noticed that Cookies are put onto our computers when we look at someone's blog (i.e. looserobes) so maybe there is something wrong with your Cookie for him. You could try deleting the Internet files using the Tools menu in Internet Explorer or if you know how to get to your Cookies folder delete that one. It will regenerate on its own the next time you go to his page.

Dehydrators aren't supposed to use much power. No more than a light bulb anyway. I'm storing the apples in canning jars in the basement which is just slightly cooler than the upstairs. Using a FoodSaver to vaccum seal the jars is a good idea, but not necessary. If the apples are leathery (or completely hard) and you don't see any moisture when you tear them in half, they are done. They are great snacks for the kids (and me!).

You are one amazing fellow! One of these times when I go to Indianapolis I am going to have to make it a point to meet you... and try out your home-grown and home cooked dinners.

I love the smell of a wood stove - and putting on clothes after they've warmed on the stove is such an exquisite indulgence.

JR has been getting in our wood supply. I think it is going to be a very cold winter in this area. JR shot a 3 point buck and the hair was the thickest I have ever seen on a deer. Right now, the wind is actually whistling and is bone chilling cold. Yesterday, we saw a few white flakes falling out of the sky. I'm not ready for winter yet.

Way to go, Randy!

Been stuck hauling wood myself. No fun. Nothing better than a roaring fire on a cold winter day.

Used to heat our Denver house with a wood stove and got the wood up here. In 1986 Mr. Tbend lost his wedding band, thought he left it in the bedroom here. A year later he was up on the hill getting some of that wood he'd cut previously and discovered his ring lying there in the pine needles.

A blank screen? No wonder I haven't been feeling well... My blogs have been getting comments, so I don't know what to tell you, buddy.

The markets are kicking hell out of my retirement funds, but I figure WTF, it'll go back up someday. I am enjoying this amazing fall. I am sitting here (in my new place) looking out the window at the fog shrouding the Patullo Bridge, it's like the bridge is peeking out of the blankets! There was frost here this morning (the first) and it is crisp and sunny just like a fall day should be. Sounds like you are gathering in the harvest for the long dark days of winter. I am hitting the farmers markets and doing a little gathering too, the root vegetables are perfect now. It is our Thanksgiving this weekend, so I need to get a pumpkin (no not pie but the most amazing cheesecake). I am also fostering a dog for a friend who is between lives right now (getting rid of house and husband and trying to find at least, a new place to live) so I am getting a ton of exercise walking the beast. I love the "change" seasons! It's winter and summer that scare me. Hope you have a great day and lucky you on the walnuts - we have chestnuts here and they are just getting ready to drop.

You sound busy. We have tons of black walnuts but delicious as they are, they are just too hard to extract.

I just thought you were stocking up for winter, but for the depression, but this year it may be the same thing.

Okay, do tell what kind of dehydrator you bought! I've been eying the 9 tray Excalibur, but it's $280. So for now, I'm sticking with the Nesco American Harvest rounds ones that I have (one was a gift, the other from a thrift store for $10). I bought the fruit roll up trays and mesh screens for it, and it works just fine. I dried nearly a bushel of apples, plus lots of fruit leathers and some vegetables. The apples are terrific if you dry them crisp.

The two assumptions that were the root causes of our international crash are
1. the error of assuming real estate will always increase in value.
2. the error of assuming that stock prices always increase.
Both assumptions led to this. Over the long period both land and stocks will increase, but the exuberance of the last few years outpaced that. Stocks traditionally should be priced at 15 time earnings. They are getting back to that these last few weeks. Real estate got too pricey for the markets. People could no longer afford to buy. When it settles out house and land prices should be about half of what they were at their peak.

I saw a photo somewhere of a demonstration on Wall Street outside the Exchange and someone held a sign that read: "JUMP, YOU F*CKERS!" I wish I had made that sign.
