Cell Phones and Other Stuff

I'm finished, done, capoot. Yesterday was my last wood cutting day. I have two years worth to keep me warm all winter. I don't like being alone in the woods using a chain saw, but I know no other "nuts" like me. My whole family worries. It's back to the "You need a cell phone in case you have an accident" plea.

True, I know I should have one, but it ain't agonna happen. I simply don't want one. I've lived a long life without one, and just because everybody else has one.... Well, enough said. And no lectures, please. I have to admit, though, I like my answering machine. Solicitors hang up. The Democratic party, environmental orgs., and "troopers" are hot after my money. I have other "causes", namely my own family.

I did take a phone call from my daughter in Honduras last night. She's been in severe pain lately. Now she knows why--herniated lumbar disc. This will require expensive surgery, and they have no health insurance. I warned them long ago, but my stupid SIL ignored me. Now they're pleading for money. That puts me in a bind. I told them long ago, don't ask me for help if something happens. But it's my daughter. Geez. At least surgery is much cheaper down there than in the states.

When I visited daughter #3 this past weekend, she and Nate were quite depressed. Vegetable produce sales are zilch, tractor transmission shot, drought has been devastating, etc. Boy, I hate to see my children struggling. The one thing they have going for them is their son. He's starting to talk and walk. And he's such a great kid.

Lastly, there's nothing new to report on my dropping out of the senior golf league and Lions Club. I have ignored those involved. Somebody did me a favor and ripped off my "It's Great to be a Lion" bumper sticker (in the golf course parking lot?). I was going to do it today when I washed my truck. It's funny--to my recollection, I've never had an "enemy" in my whole life. Now this, all after a petty incidence. At least I'm not losing any sleep over it.

I love my cell phone, but, I hardly ever get any calls on it. I used it for email, as a camera, to keep phone #'s and addresses, to play games when I ave to wait somewhere, I can use the internet and Facebook, listen to music and audio books - and for emergencies.

Oh, I know it has its uses. I reckon I'm just old fashioned. I don't miss what I don't have. Hope you're doing okay.

Must feel difficult hearing about the difficulties of your daughters.... And for the golf: time heals I hope

Thanks for dropping in on my crazy life.

I agree with tealstar. The argument that you have lived this long without a cell is pretty darn silly. You lived most of your life without a pc too and you still have one! My only thing with cell phones is people expect you to be available all the time to take their calls, and frankly, I refuse to do so! I have a limited plan and refuse to waste my minutes on chatter, and when I don't feel like talking, I just don't answer my phone or turn the cell phone off. I do, however, always take it in the car with me. What if I break down, especially at night?

I wouldn't use it if I had one. I hate "trivial" chatter. Besides, there's no one I want to talk to. I hate it on the golf course when someone gets a call and interrupts us all. You can't concentrate when there's chatter in the background. If I could buy a cell phone with "forever" minutes--call out only for emergencies, I'd buy one. Like a walkie talkie. And I'm not being "silly", silly!

So sorry about your daughter. This must be the season of the bad back. Both my coworkers had a serious back injury. One had surgery, one did not. Guess which is doing better. The statistics for people with herniated discs who opt for surgery show about the same recovery rate as those who get treated with bed rest. But I think both groups risk relapse if they don't get P.T. to get stronger afterwards.

Your information was on the news a few weeks ago. Like 80% (I'm guessing) don't need back surgery. It's a scam. But I've had a couple of friends that say it saved them. So I don't know. Thanks for stopping by.

That's kind of creepy about the bumper sticker, presumptuous of somebody.

I was a little freaked out. Thankfully, he (they) didn't tear off my other bumper sticker--"Imagine No Religion" !!!! I've had it for about 5 months. Ironically, the only person that has EVER said anything about it was a preacher! He liked it! Thought it might make a good sermon topic.

Randy, I finally got a jitterbug phone. My main reason being that I could
not see the numbers on other brands. We only use it for emergencies and
long distance calling.

Why do people keep insisting I get one? How did we live without them?
reply by solitaire on Sept 29, 2010 1:06 PM ()
I have got a cell phone - here in the uk we call them 'mobiles'. I rarely phone anyone - mobile or land line. I do use the text option on the mobile though - I prefer to 'type' my message rather than 'speak' (that way, I CAN get a word in edgeways ). Funny enough, it is only a few days ago that my daughter (lynniessoufle) pulled me up on the fact that I rarely call her.
One good (and handy) thing about having a cell phone/mobile is that provided we carry it upon our person, we can always phone an 'emergency service', should we have call for them. It does make sense I suppose.

Just call me "stone age Randall". The answer is still NO! But thanks for the information. It's just not for me.

I don't suppose it has occurred to you that your warnings to your daughter about health insurance are as valid as the warnings to you about a cell phone. Get a cheapy -- Boost offers a $20 every 3 months card. If you pony up another $20 at the 3-month deadline, you don't lose any un-used minutes. Think about it.
comment by tealstar on Sept 28, 2010 3:58 PM ()
Sort of a "told you so"? (warnings)
reply by solitaire on Sept 29, 2010 1:08 PM ()
Hmm, let me think about it--no.

I HATE cell phones!!!

Is that the daughter with your grandson? You better help them out--what are fathers, grandfathes and FIL for???????????
comment by greatmartin on Sept 28, 2010 3:44 PM ()
I have two grandsons (and granddaughter), one from each daughter. I've told them I won't be their "health insurance". I will help her fly back to the states if nec. PS: I'm glad I have a "brother" in the cell phones!

I think it's sad about the falling out but I am glad that you are ok with it...
So hard to hear about your daughter! Why didn't she get insurance though? Was it too much money?
PS Get a cell phone. j/k

She RUNS a medical clinic--doctor and dentist included. They never figured anything major would happen. And, of course, "god will watch over them".
