Red October

It's October 1st today, and as I write, a red-orange sun is peeking through the trees. It looks to be another sunny, dry day. It's cooled off considerably, but still cloudless.

With a severe drought going on, farmers are kicking up tons (literally!) of dust as they harvest beans and corn. Many of the ignorant ones disc or plow their fields soon thereafter. That makes for hazy skies and very red sunrises/sets. 30 mph winds yesterday didn't help matters any.

My lawn is really ugly, baked to the bone. I water some plants and bushes, but that's all. I've tried to keep broccoli and Brussels sprouts wet, along with some tomato and pepper plants. Otherwise, the garden is in a pretty sorry state of affairs.

I can tell when the water table is low, because my tap water, drawn from a 100 year old shallow well, turns a reddish black. Thankfully, I installed a water filter years ago for drinking water. But it's a daily task to clean the toilets and bathtub from iron stains.

I'm not complaining about the lack of rain. It beats what's happening to my Eastern neighbors. We'll pay for this nice weather one of these days. Have a good weekend, friends.

I do wish you were able to have a share of the much needed rain you need in exchange for just a bit of 'dry' weather. We are desperately needing to finish concreting and lay some patio slabs upon the the back yard. We began it during a 'good' spell (the weather forecaster having given a good depiction of weather to look forward to - then it all changed)!
But, it will give up eventually - positive thinking will always succeed in the end

In watching the Ryder Cup this morning, it appears your weather HAS improved considerably! There's that positive attitude you wrote about! We have nothing but sunny skies forecast for the next 7 days.

Be just your luck--you wll come to Florida during our 10 day cold spell when the weather goes all the way down to the 70s during the day and may even hit the mid 50s at night--brrrrr

I know you're being facetious, but that's what happened last year, minus about 20 degrees! It was mighty chilly for two weeks on the Panhandle's Gulf Coast. Still, it was better than Indiana.

Also experiencing a little break in the oppressive heat -- cloudy skies suit me fine. We had a "boil water" notice for a couple of days due to a repair on a major pipe. So I brushed my teeth with bottled water just as if I was traveling in a 3rd world country. I have been drinking and usimg bottled water for the cats for some time now. They weren't drinking the tap water either -- smart kitties. The refrigerator repair guy who comes in a few days will either make the refrigerator-filter improve the taste or it's bottled water forever.

I'm so used to my well water taste, I don't like city water. Certainly not Florida's. Even bottled water tastes flat. I'm hoping the minerals in my water are good for me!

I actually enjoyed the rain... it's sunny and pretty out again though and I like that as well. I am hoping the rain helped our yard!

I figured you got plenty of rain. Weather maps looked pretty ominous for you Easterners.

My uncle at the trading post has an artesian well (no pump needed, the water comes out of the ground under its own natural pressure) and the water is full of iron, although you can't see it. All his dishes turned orange because he lets them air dry, the sink is orange, and the toilet gets a black ugly coating where the water touches. Hope yours doesn't get that bad.
comment by troutbend on Oct 1, 2010 10:38 AM ()
Exactly the same here! If you let water stand in the sink or a glass, the iron settles out on the bottom. My sister thought the water was contaminated with organisms. Perhaps that's one reason she moved out. My family has never been sick from the water (as far as I know).

Love these cool days, but I know what you mean about the dust in the air from harvesting beans and corn. It's terrible for people with allergies.

Hi CJ. As I write 24 hours later, it's raining (lightly). It's washing the dust off everything. Hurray! We won't get more than 0.2" however. Might not even get wet under the trees.

On this side of Florida we did not get pounded with the rains on the east coast but that may change with this next storm: it looks like it will cross the state from the Atlantic and into the Gulf.

Well, if you need the rain, I hope you get some. If not, I hope you don't!

WOW! We have cooled off, too---low 90s the past few days--our Autumn

I really like hot weather, mostly because I really hate the cold. If I come to Florida this winter, save some warm, sunny days for me.

We have too much rain here lately...finally a nice sun today

I've been following your political "crisis" lately. Homeless evicted from abandoned buildings, too. What's up with that?

We are pretty dry here too but these cool days are wonderful.

It won't be long before those cold "Northers" come blowing across the plains. Get your coats ready.
