Taking a Break

Like Fredo, I'm taking a break from blogging--actually the whole computer thing. But, unlike Fredo, I'm not doing it on purpose.

Starting Thurs (Apr 7), I'm driving West to the Moab/Arches area in Utah. Yes, it's another one of those Wilderness Volunteer trips--my first in a year, since Hawaii.

The plan is to drive through Kansas (exclamation point), stopping overnight somewhere around Emporia, throwing my sleeping bag on the ground or back of my truck. I enjoy doing this, rather than going to a motel. Sleeping under the stars (hopefully), inhaling fresh air, waking up to the birds singing the sun up--all beats the heck out of some dingy, stinky, noisy motel room. Plus I save $50-60 or more.
I'll eat breakfast (French toast!) some place (not McD's), use the bathroom to clean up, and take off.

I plan to hike in Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve after Friday's breakfast. Then I'll drive to LaJunta, CO and camp in the Comanche Grasslands (unless it's too cold or rainy).
Another hike before heading across to Cortez, CO. I WILL stay in a motel to shower and sleep in a soft bed. That's because starting Sunday, I'll be tenting for 6 nights.

The actual venture is called the "Negro Bill Wilderness Area service trip". We're supposed to do trail maintainance among other things. We have one free day (Wed) to explore or visit the area (or do nothing). If you're curious, go to www.wildernessvolunteers.org/ , click on "trips" to find this one listed. It details what the trip entails.

I plan other stops here and there, coming and going, but I won't bore you--at least not now. I'm now going to check "gas buddy.com" for lowest gas prices. Ouch, I'm afraid. Then I need to start packing gear, clothes, and food (snacky stuff), but I can do that in my sleep.

I'll return Mon. April 18 (hopefully), and be back on mybloggers soon thereafter. In the meantime, to all my friends here, be well and take care. Remember, life needs a kick in the pants every once in awhile!

Have a great trip! I didn't warn you about the all day closure of I-70 west of Denver yesterday because it's over. They are going to have 20 minute delays today (Wednesday) but you'll miss that, too. I don't know how much time you'll be on the Interstate anyway.

Hey! are you going past my Uncle Robert's trading post? (the road to Hovenweep on the south side of Cortez, follow the signs to the airport, and keep going west.

I'm decreasing my chances of running into snow by going the southern route, from Walsenburg to Durango. Still, I have to cross the San Juan's. It's been bad before as I traversed them. Cortez's weather for Sat. is a high of 50, low 20!!!! But Moab promises sun and warmth--or so they say. Thanks for the "warnings". Let's hope the weather gods are with me.

Give Looserobes a call. You two would look great in a MyBloggers photo in your hiking gear.

He's across the state from where I'll be. Besides, I don't have his phone #. I hike in my pajamas.

Randy, I hope you have a great time. I envy you your freedom to be able to go and do whatever makes you happy. You are one of my favorite people that I have been fortunate to meet on MyBloggers. Take lots of pictures; I look forward to sharing your ventures on this trip and be safe.

How sweet of you, Nancy! I really am a nice guy. Too bad the women aren't beating my door down! But, I'm looking forward to hitting the road. It's a different world out West. I might stay!

Sounds like a great adventure. Take pictures, stay safe, and we'll await your return.

Thank you muchly. I do take lots of photos--although I can't change the mindset of "saving film" from the old pre-digital days. And then, I can't get them to transfer to mybloggers like I used to. But I'll try.

Randy,I am back to fill in the void when you leave.
Your trip sounds great.I need a kick and you know where.
Will see you when back.

Well, I didn't expect to hear from you so soon! Sorry to be missing your new posts. Don't do anything spectacular while I'm gone.

My idea of a vacation is sitting under the shade of an umbrella and sipping drinks with little parasols by the pool with my knitting bag at hand. I've never been allowed to take this vacation. DH would love the idea of your little holiday; volunteering, camping, etc but he's much too out of shape to actually enjoy the trip. Keep safe. Stay away from forest fires and hornets' nests.

Well, campings not for everyone. And, actually, I have been stung--3 times at once--by small yellow jackets, on one of these trips. No reaction, however. I had my own "forest fire" yest., as I burned a huge pile of pruned limbs. See you later. Thanks for dropping by.

What an adventure! I love it. I would be scared to sleep out in the open, but I guess that's just another difference btw men and women... Be safe and have fun!!!

These trips force me to get away and see the U.S. of A. And while anything can happen, I don't worry. Even with no cell phone or weapon, I feel safe. I'll temporarily miss you all.

Your trip sounds so "Randy". Careful where you sleep under the stars while on the road. Th world is full of evil nut jobs, but you know that. Stay safe and come back soon.
comment by dragonflyby on Apr 5, 2011 9:24 AM ()
Nobody's "nuttier" than I, so I don't worry. Thanks for the good wishes.

Randy, are you sure it is safe to sleep out like that? You are pretty
vulnerable to predators, both animal and human.
comment by elderjane on Apr 5, 2011 9:17 AM ()
Not to worry (I don't). It's more dangerous driving. Besides, my window decal says "Have gun, Will travel". Who's going to mess with that?! (It's a bluff, of course.)

Enjoy--take notes!!!
comment by greatmartin on Apr 5, 2011 7:55 AM ()
I always "take notes" by keeping a journal of activities and adventures. Some great grandchild might enjoy seeing what ol' "Granddad" did in his youth (younger than you, anyway!)!

Sounds exciting Randy...have a great time!

Delighted to hear you're taking another one of these cool trips! Wishing you safe travels and all the best. It's a dream of mine to visit and explore the Tallgrass Praire National Preserve — say hello to a meadowlark for me!
comment by marta on Apr 5, 2011 6:07 AM ()
Will do. This will be my third time stopping at the Tallgrass park. I'm sure you would love it. Perhaps some day.
