Basso Profundo

I've always been a singing bass, but right now, I'm a talking--make that whispering--bass, very deep bass.

The mild cold I thought I had last week, developed into a rather severe head and deep throat cold over the weekend. As a result, I pretty much lost my voice. And, of course, I've been miserable.

Worse, the weather has been super nice, and I haven't felt up to par to playing golf. I'll try today and see how long I last.

And even worser, I've been called upon to run several "errands". First, my Honduran daughter is "home" for the week--in and out--as she's taking "continuing education" courses for her optometry licence. So I've been "hosting" her. No big deal, but I couldn't just "crash".

Then yesterday, I had promised my sister I'd accompany her to the out-patient hospital for ear surgery. What we thought would be a 3 hour affair, turned out to be virtually all day (7 hr.), what with me waiting around, driving her home, picking up meds (3 trips to various pharmecists), etc.

We had a family supper planned at my Dad's house last night-the only night free for Valerie (Hond.) and her sister (Emily) and my grandson. It was fun, but I was exhausted. Plus, I couldn't talk. I'm sure the food was good (other sister Barb cooked), although I couldn't taste it.

I just hope I didn't pass my cold on to the whole family! This has been no fun. But I think I'm over the hump. I'll catch up on all your doings this weekend. This 70+ degree weather will be soon gone. By the way, still NO RAIN!!

Is my week (or 7 days) up yet? I'm getting there, thank you very much.

You probably need to rest those vocal cords anyway. You're such a chatterbox. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Hey, I resemble that remark! But true--or so my friends say.

The ear surgery was to get rid of some sort of irritating noise--thumping, I think. She's a hypo, so I rather ignored her whining about it. But I'm off my soup diet, so Thanksgiving, here I come!!

Hope you get better soon. Drink some hot lemonade and have some chicken soup.

Oh I had lots of soup. Then I saw how much sodium was in each bouillon cube (880mg)! My BP must be 200/150! But it was homemade soup with lots of veggies in it. Oooo, so good.

Eek! Sounds like you need some rest mister! I know it's not your forte but I think your sickness is calling for it! You are always so busy... in sickness and in health.

Yes, and walking 18 holes of golf yest., plus yard work, about did me in. But I'm going out again today! What an idiot I am.

Get well--no where in your living contract does it say you are allowed to get sick--read it again!

Damn. Must have been in the fine print!

What a bummer to be sick with so many obligations. You were noble to persevere. I would have asked for help. For instance, the cooking sister could have taken the other sister for the surgery.

Years ago I had laryngitis so severe I sounded like Tallulah. I was having a drink with a girlfriend and we were talking and my voice was turning all the guys in the bar on. That was so much fun I kept talking until I lost my voice entirely.

Barb was tied up with music student and rehearsals, so she was out. Another friend couldn't. And we didn't want Dad to be subjected. I was "scheduled" two weeks ago, so I felt obligated. Besides, Carole has cancelled out on helping others before, with questionable excuses. I wanted to show her up--to prove the "death bed" couldn't prevent me from fulfilling my promise. Ha. Showed her, cough cough, wheeze, wheeze!

Poor boy.Try to take it easy...is there someone who could come and take care of you?

By the way...I've always thought the worst part of a cold is not being able to taste...
comment by juliansmom on Nov 10, 2010 6:25 AM ()
Thank you. I really don't need anyone to take care of me--just someone to prevent me from overdoing it. I can't sit still. "Taking it easy" isn't something I do well!

Randy, my formula for dealing with colds is this: At the first inkling of a cold coming on I take 5000 mil. of Vita-men C, a benadryl and two aspirins. Do this twice a day. As a result, I seldom suffer with one.
With the drainage dried up you don't get sore throat or sinus trouble.
comment by elderjane on Nov 10, 2010 6:21 AM ()
Okay, mother. Next time! I thought the vitamin C thing was debunked?

I've had few colds since I retired from teaching. Don't know who gave me this one, but it's nasty. Thanks for your concern.
