Living with Diabetes

Monday I got all of my supplies for testing my blood sugar at home. It has definitely been enlightening. On mornings when I have a high reading, I feel like crap. Days where the reading is in a better range, I don't feel too bad. The big thing for me has been making sure to eat breakfast and lunch. I have never been a breakfast eater and when you skip one meal, it's easy to skip the next. Usually I skip lunch because I simply don't think about it. I am busy doing housework and don't notice that twinge of hunger. But by mid afternoon I am ravenous. And what do I go for, cookies, cake, junk food. So this week has been radically different for me. I am eating breakfast, good things too! Lunch is more of a challenge for me. I have been eating lunch, just not sure how good my choices were. They tell you white potatoes are bad. One night I made a casserold with potatoes in it. I took my reading 2 hours after dinner and it was 204. It isn't hard for me to cut things out that I wouldnormally eat. I don't eat white bread at all anyway but potato rolls! oh my!

My doctor is going to set me up with a diabetes educator at my local hospital. I have an advantage though over most people. I have my own personal nutritionist. My oldest sister is a nutritionist and she has been a huge help to me. Monday night I was feeling so overwhelmed with information and also questions on what to eat. I called her up and she put me at ease. She said you don't have to cut things out, it's all about moderation.

I also need to drink more water. YUCK! Water is fine in summer when it's hot but not winter. So I got some of those individual drink mixes to add to my water. They are sugar free, or artificially sweetened.

My main issue right now is dinner. What to cook and how to cook it. One night I made beef stew, without potatoes, and that seemed pretty good. My sugar the next morning was lower than normal. What I need is someone to educate me on how to change how I cook.

I would have to say I feel pretty motivated to get healthy. I even took a short walk on Wednesday with some friends. About a 15 minute walk. Start out slow, don't overwhelm myself.

The funny thing is I have a friend who is diabetic. She takes the pills plus a needle at night. Sometimes she has really high readings, like 300. And she thinks she is qualified to tell me what to eat. I don't think so. She eats all the things we are not supposed to and I guess justifies it by thinking she is taking the meds for her sugar so it's ok.

My hubby has become the food police, but in a good way. Last night he asked me if it would bother me if he ate some ice cream. I told him that was fine, I didn't expect him to give up everything. And he usually asks me when he gets home how my sugar readings were. Dakota likes to tease me about food. I had a couple andes mints last night and he yelled, YOU AREN'T SUPPOSED TO HAVE THOSE! LOL I only had 3.

I also need to get some healthy snacks. If one more person tells me raw veggies I will scream. I like most raw veggies but it's not going to be my snack everyday and besides, they are expensive.

Sorry for the boring rundown of my diet. I do appreciate any tips for snacks and dinner.

I'm no expert. I don't eat very healthy, since I live alone.

Not raw veggies--cooked! With olive oil, they're delicious. And cooked are more healthy.

there are so many misconceptions I have! I love my veggies and will try your technique.

It's not me. I'm not that dumb.

I am starting to get the hang of it, with lots of help from my sister the dietician! I met with her yesterday and she gave me great ideas for snacks. She had a tip for when I have spaghetti. I should make a salad and eat that first. Well that's what we had last night and this morning was my lowest reading yet!

I know it will help you to work with a diabetes educator. Also, ask the educator if the hospital offer any diabetes support groups or cooking classes. They can be extra helpful. When my Dad became diabetic (Type II) years ago, I attended a hospital diabetes education course and found it really enlightening. I received a wonderful diabetes cookbook from a friend, whose children were Type I diabetics. It might be very helpful to you. Message me with your address and I'll mail it to you, if you'd like it.

the hospital does have different programs and classes. I will have to check with my insurance to see if I need a referral or how that works. Each day I feel a little better about handling this.

You should get Dr. Atkins cookbook. Deviled eggs are good. Cauliflower can
be used as a pizza crust. If there is an Aldi's store near you they specialize in low priced fruits and vegetables.

no aldi's here. I will have to check around for other stores though. I heard there is a mexican run produce store that has good prices. just not sure where it is. lol I think I will check into that cookbook, heard several people mention Atkins to me. One day for lunch I had a frozen pizza and my reading after that was sky high! I guess it's all about substituting. thanks for the tips!

I know a lady who snacks on potato chips and has canned soup for lunch because, "Oh, I take pills for my high blood pressure."

you bad girl you! we can't be good all the time!

There are many recipes on the Internet that substitute cauliflower for potatoes. Even if you think you don't like cauliflower, put some cheese on it and see what you think. A low-carb snack is peanut butter (read the label and find one low sugar) on celery. One thing that helps with snacking is to never bring home the foods you shouldn't be eating. Yes, I realize your son and husband are not required to be on your food plan, but it wouldn't hurt them to eat healthy, too.

I have actually done the mashed cauliflower before and I really like it! thanks for reminding me! I already told hubby, with our budget I can't afford to buy food that suits everyone, he agreed with that. But he does have some things like the ice cream and he got into my cookie supplies of chocolate chips!

I was diagnosed with Type II five or six years ago. Doc always says, "good control", but I hesitate to take too much credit. I always eat a protein with a carb and simple "tricks" like that and keep my A1c between 5.8 and 6.1, but I'm afraid it's more good luck than proper planning on my part. If the A1c gets out of hand I'll start doing Atkins with Donna. A few less tonage should go a long way. Donna has lost 140+ pounds on her "lifestyle choice" so I know that works. She's been doing it for years and I do the cooking, so I know she eats good stuff.

once you get on schedule and things will run smoothly for you.
Going to take time.Do not over do it.Also try to get some workout there as this could be a big help to you.

I do need to workout. I was thinking of getting some light weights to help me. I used to do the whole weight lifting thing and really enjoyed it. I need indoor exercise for when it's not so nice outside. I am taking step by step.

I think it is really enlightening. It sound like you have done a great job adapting as you have learned what foods cause the biggest damage for you! Great job!
comment by trekbrarian on Jan 27, 2012 8:29 AM ()
thanks trekkie! I have to admit that first day I was just in this state of 'what now?' But after a pep talk from my sister I felt alot better. I have been letting my health go for a few years now and I feel this was my wake up call. It's onward and upward from here.

Stop testing every 2 hours--it will drive you crazy
comment by greatmartin on Jan 27, 2012 8:06 AM ()

I test regularly(read:whenever I remember or feel like it). I am very naughty about snacks too. I need to do better. I am in a conundrum. I can't eat green veggies 'cause it interferes with my blood thinners, I can't eat red meat because of my cholesterol, and I can't eat pasta and spuds because of my diabetes. sheesh. I have however dropped about 15 lbs and my A1C has gone from 11.0 to 8.9 Don't know how this is happening.
