Monday I got all of my supplies for testing my blood sugar at home. It has definitely been enlightening. On mornings when I have a high reading, I feel like crap. Days where the reading is in a better range, I don't feel too bad. The big thing for me has been making sure to eat breakfast and lunch. I have never been a breakfast eater and when you skip one meal, it's easy to skip the next. Usually I skip lunch because I simply don't think about it. I am busy doing housework and don't notice that twinge of hunger. But by mid afternoon I am ravenous. And what do I go for, cookies, cake, junk food. So this week has been radically different for me. I am eating breakfast, good things too! Lunch is more of a challenge for me. I have been eating lunch, just not sure how good my choices were. They tell you white potatoes are bad. One night I made a casserold with potatoes in it. I took my reading 2 hours after dinner and it was 204. It isn't hard for me to cut things out that I wouldnormally eat. I don't eat white bread at all anyway but potato rolls! oh my!
My doctor is going to set me up with a diabetes educator at my local hospital. I have an advantage though over most people. I have my own personal nutritionist. My oldest sister is a nutritionist and she has been a huge help to me. Monday night I was feeling so overwhelmed with information and also questions on what to eat. I called her up and she put me at ease. She said you don't have to cut things out, it's all about moderation.
I also need to drink more water. YUCK! Water is fine in summer when it's hot but not winter. So I got some of those individual drink mixes to add to my water. They are sugar free, or artificially sweetened.
My main issue right now is dinner. What to cook and how to cook it. One night I made beef stew, without potatoes, and that seemed pretty good. My sugar the next morning was lower than normal. What I need is someone to educate me on how to change how I cook.
I would have to say I feel pretty motivated to get healthy. I even took a short walk on Wednesday with some friends. About a 15 minute walk. Start out slow, don't overwhelm myself.
The funny thing is I have a friend who is diabetic. She takes the pills plus a needle at night. Sometimes she has really high readings, like 300. And she thinks she is qualified to tell me what to eat. I don't think so. She eats all the things we are not supposed to and I guess justifies it by thinking she is taking the meds for her sugar so it's ok.
My hubby has become the food police, but in a good way. Last night he asked me if it would bother me if he ate some ice cream. I told him that was fine, I didn't expect him to give up everything. And he usually asks me when he gets home how my sugar readings were. Dakota likes to tease me about food. I had a couple andes mints last night and he yelled, YOU AREN'T SUPPOSED TO HAVE THOSE! LOL I only had 3.
I also need to get some healthy snacks. If one more person tells me raw veggies I will scream. I like most raw veggies but it's not going to be my snack everyday and besides, they are expensive.
Sorry for the boring rundown of my diet. I do appreciate any tips for snacks and dinner.
