Rex and Us

Rex is a gorgeous golden retriever. He is two shades of blonde with platinum under fur and he sheds like crazy. He
needs to be brushed every day but I can get very negligent
about it. We didn't pick him out, he moved to our house from
a neighbors house and picked us out. They were glad to let
him go, I think because he was so big that he was constantly
knocking their little girl down. The father was very abusive
to him so he is fearful and neurotic. The only men that he
likes are Ted and Bobby.

The last time we had him boarded for two weeks and we decided
we could never be gone that long again. He lost a lot of weight and was so clinging when we got back that we realized
we could never do it again. Having a pet is a commitment but
they bring so much joy to life.

He has the most wonderful disposition and now that he has been
trained not to jump on people, he is a superb children's dog.
He might steal their attractive toys, but hey, he is a
retriever and that's what they do. He is good with cats and
other dogs.

Not everyone is willing to give up black pants, (the shedding) and long trips, and the middle of the bed but we
are happy to do it for our third child.

Rex is beautiful and yes, your 'other' child. By the way, the painting I did of a retriever in bed with the couple receives many, many views on Fine Art America.

Golden retrievers are beautiful animals and quite well disposed as a rule.

There has to be a company near you that offers that service and is bonded and insured... look up on https://www.petsit.com/locate/
Don't stop travelling! But I am glad you are willing to do so for your little man Rex.

Angel has never brought a mouse in the house. I think she prefers to play with birds rather than rodents. She's a very picky eater so I don't think she eats either one.

I think I'm the only mybloggers-ite that doesn't have a pet (anymore). Raccoons, rabbits, possums, birds, moles, squirrels, and mice satisfy my needs.

my elkhound was a crazy shedder. her hair would come out in clumps two times a year. once before summer and then before winter. it was the softest fur and I would have to take her outside to brush. i used to joke that we could make another dog from all the hair she shed.

too bad you didn't know to send it to nitteneedles. Marg does great things
with dog fur.

I understand completely and Rex and you are so lucky to have found each other. I dearly love my two cats, too. Pets are so precious.

I miss having a cat. Dogs don't purr or cuddle nearly as well.

We're in the same fix. When we absolutely have to be gone overnight, we get someone to spend the night. And, of course, Brunswick needs epilepsy medication every 12 hours. We love them to pieces, and get much joy out of them and that's the bottom line.

I cozy up to all the dogs in the neighborhood too -- but I don't have one as I couldn't handle 3 cats plus a dog. Neighbor has a springer spaniel who bounds over to me in the early morning -- I love this dog. I scratch his ears and give him hugs.

We realized when we got back from our last trip that it truly would be
the last one unless we could take Rex. My son can't keep him because his
yard is not secure and his chiweeny is pathologically jealous.

You're my kind of pet people.
I was considering giving Angel a poke this afternoon as she's been lying in her little kitty bed all day but then she moved. Content that she was still alive and breathing I left her to slumber.

I'll bet Angel is up playing at night....naughty girl. Does she mouse?
My china never would.

Benny was diagnosed with separation anxiety (very specific symptoms) so boarding hasn't been an option in 10 years. But I have the travel trailer, and if we can't take the boyz someplace then we rally don't need to go anyway. Rex is a lucky dog!

We are thinking about some kind of motorhome so we can take Rex along but
it will come to nothing unless Ted gets a lot better.

I love those stories about when you lived in the country and Rex would bring home the neighbor's shoes.

He had a place where he kept everything he brought home. We found a whole
nest of Red's golf balls that he had retrieved.

I love responsible pet owners. Have you looked into an overnight pet sitter? That would probably be a lot less stressful for Rex, I know that's how we deal with Kraymer...

It is hard to be gone for any length of time and hard to find a responsible
sitter.
reply by elderjane on Jan 11, 2012 4:24 PM ()
yes,it tough to board them. But one cannot give up everything in when going away.
Maybe need to leave him with family members.Buffy has this problem at first and now he is so happy to go and play with other dogs. The need to socialize like us.

That's the way I felt until the last time but it had such a bad effect on
Rex that I think we will stay home awhile. We need to go see our friend
Ruth but she has three cats and we can't work anything out.
