Passing the Baton

What do you do when you are ready to pass the baton and no
one wants it?

Yesterday, my sister and I got up at 4:30 to do the final
cooking for our family reunion. She did turkey, dressing and
pumpkin pie, I took a turkey breast, ham, 2 pecan pies,
baked beans and a chocolate cake. It was at her house and
she had made a special effort with setting up three tables.
They were beautifully appointed. Our off spring and their
off spring were supposed to bring the side dishes. Needless
to say, there was too much food.

My sister made the announcement that the next generation
needed to take over. Silence ensued. It is my turn to host
it next year and I shall. However, I am afraid that when we
are gone the tradition will perish.

All in all, we had a good time. Everyone filled a plate to
take home with them so there weren't too many left overs
to deal with.

We combined Thanksgiving with Penelope's birthday. Penelope
is my grand grand niece. She had a cup cake with one
candle and lots of presents. She is a tiny, walking dynamo
and bald as a little egg.

I hope you had as good a time as I did.

I would have to agree, it is TOOOOOO MUCH to do all that you do, although I hope that they keep it going for your sake... And let you take all the rest of your years off from all the hard work.

Left overs are wonderful.

I hope someone in your younger generations cares enough to keep up the tradition.

There is so much pleasure to be had visiting with extended family. For
some reason it is my mother's family who have stayed connected.

Traditions naturally evolve moving from one generation to another, but one hopes that the younger ones will value the experience in time to carry on in some way. With all the delight of being together that your describe, I hold a lot of hope.

I don't know if it will hang together after we are gone but I hope it
will. The little cousins enjoy it so much and they only see each other
once a year.

Before the parade passes by.You need to pass the baton on this. Then again do you think that they know how to handle this.
Or a little by little.

I have a great niece who could handle it. She sometimes cooks for fifty
people. It is a lot of work but very worth it.

What wonderful memories you gave them! I agree with your sister. It is time for one of the next generation to take over or the tradition will die with you. Maybe you could offer to assist one of the younger women in planning and cooking next year?

Penelope's mother is the best candidate. My daughter is not a cook and
my daughter in law hates cooking. Kevin Anne brought a grape pie and it
was unusual and delicious.

as i was doing my prep work wednesday night and Dakota was helping me, I said to him, how in the world did meemaw do this for our huge family! We had 6 kids in our family and as we grew up and married the table became bigger and bigger. old traditions are the best!

We have expanded greatly. I think when we all get together, with everyone's
kids and their kids, we are about 35 and growing.

Sounds sumptuous. As for anyone taking over, a few months before the 2014 Thanksgiving, make reservations for you and Ted to go on a grand trip. That should shake everyone up.

Last year we went to Italy and Greece and ignored Thanksgiving. We are still
hearing about it.
