Incredible Sight

I saw the gaudiest little bird, evidently just a hatchling, learning to fly. He looked like a minature parrot, with a red head and yellow and blue markings. I did a little research, and to the best of my knowledge, it appears to be a finch of some variety. They hide in the grass and the bushes because the larger birds attack them.

He was so small that a blade of Johnson grass served as a perch for him.

We are having a thunder storm this morning. It looks ominous outside. So far, the tornadoes have been in the northern and western parts of the state.

I am trying to coax the air conditioner service man out to goose up the freon in the unit. It was only ll degrees cooler in the house than outside. He is really pretty old to be working and I may have to call someone else. He promised me Wed. but who knows.

mostly we see big birds here -- osprey and egrets and pelicans
how I love the pelicans but they have migrated away now). But
if we get a bird feeder, I'm sure we'll see the little ones.
That's next.

First let me tell you that zebra finches are worse than rabbits--I started with two and had 16 before I realized that I have to separate the sexes--DUH!! The4 males are easy to tell as they have an orange circle on each check--females don't have any--they really aren't colorful finches like Goudians--mainly brown, white and freckles--but the sweetest sounds and so easy to take care of--awhile ago I posted soem pictures of them--will do so again soon.

I didn't know they nested on the ground. Someone keeps building nests in my red geraniums, and one stupid little titmouse put her babies in an upright pipe. I'll have to remember to cover it when it rains.

What kind of bird was it? Did you find out?

I'm watching newly hatched chipping sparrows grow in a ground nest buried in my raspberry patch. I wondered why I was getting the "raspberries" from mom and pop!

I was here earlier- followed Steve's link, then just sort of wandered around for a while. Short attention span? Some finches are quite stunning, which is why a few varieties have ended up in pet stores.

Most finches are rather plain looking. Check out my post this morning on the western tanager and see if he looks anything like what you saw. It's so neat to spot beautiful birds, isn't it?
