Disturbing News

Two of my acquaintances passed away suddenly last week.
I was not close to either one of them but one of them had
children who were close to my children growing up. This
was when our neighborhood was like a village.

This woman had become increasingly strange in the last few
years. She refused to use her air conditioning and her
heat. She ate only tasteless foods and took great pleasure
in mortifying the flesh.

It made me realize the brevity of life once again and to
be determined to enjoy the everydayness of it. Simple
pleasures are abundant and the big ones are always welcome.
I fail to see the pleasure of asceticism.

She was very sick.

What a shame. Was she a "hoarder", also? Seems like there ought to be a connection, but I'm no psychiatrist. Continue to enjoy life and living, Jeri!

I do enjoy life. The months of April and May keep on spawning tornados
here and in places that never before had to worry.

Cherishing and living fully and richly and joyfully the gift of each day is all we can do, for all we truly have is this day. Sadly, there are many thoughts, issues, foibles, illnesses, delusions that can cloud one's vision of life, removing its brightness. There are also those who choose happily and willingly to follow philosophies or practices that are strange or restrictive. Unfortunately, some who follow such practices have mental health issues that, for many reasons, pull them along as prisoners. Help is available, but they cannot reach for it. Many are lost to themselves in ways that are very dark.

One can't really know what motivated your acquaintance, but I have sympathy for her, as I know you do. Most of all, I'm reminded of the preciousness of life, and celebrate the treasure of each moment.

You got my message which was hard to convey. Martyrdom is hard to understand when it appears to be so foolish.

So sorry about your friend.

Our children grew up together.

She was obviously mentally ill. Here is a def. for "mortifying the flesh" from online dictionary: to discipline (one's body and physical appetites) by self-denial or self-inflicted privation. What a fun lady.

Yes, she definitely had a mental problem. I wouldn't have been surprised
by anything. Thanks for your definition of mortifying the flesh.

Good Grief! Even nuns enjoy AC and a good diet! Life is to be enjoyed. I wonder if she was able to love freely.

It baffles me how you could see discomfort as a virtue. I don't think
she had a normal relationship with her children. what is sad is that
she used to be a fun person.

Big hugs to you, my best friend in the world.

Right back at you.

"mortifying the flesh?| My warped imagination is having a hard time with this one too.
comment by jjoohhnn on May 23, 2011 9:04 AM ()
It is not giving in to the desire for even the simple pleasures of life.
See Teal's comment. I believe it is a Catholic thing...although she wasn't Catholic.

Life is so short. We must try to appreciate every day we have and fill it with good moments. I am like Kristy. I don't know exactly what "mortifying the flesh" means.
comment by redimpala on May 23, 2011 9:02 AM ()
Teal explaned it very well from the online dictionary. I believe the
Saints of old lashed themselves and fasted and frequently wore hair shirts.

mortifying the flesh? What does that mean? Sorry for your loss - and I concur - enjoy the simple things daily!!!
comment by kristilyn3 on May 23, 2011 7:27 AM ()
I think Teal contributed a good definition. It seems so foolish to me.
I am quite sure she was mentally ill.
