Scam

There is a new Asian Scam. They tell you to take your
phone off the hook, go purchase a l05 dollar Walmart gift
card and they will bring you two and a half million dollars.
They are horribly persistent and we wondered if they plan
to burgle your house while you are gone. We didn't answer
the phone again hoping that they would leave an incriminating message on the machine but they were too clever for that.

None of us are that gullible but just thought I would mention it.

Why, yes... let me leave my phone off the hook for an hour! How silly. Just call back or give me a call back number! Do people think these things through as they dream up these scams?

Also reminds me of a call I got, fellow with an Indian accent, who, after a spiel in which he said I would get "many rewards," lucky me, but, of course, it was necessary for me to give him my bank account number. I started laughing into the phone.

The sad part is that some people are taken in. Laura mentioned the phone off the hook thing was for your alarm system not being able to check back
with you. I hadn't thought of that.

Isn't it ridiculous!

It is really crazy.

What a silly scam, especially leaving the phone off the hook for all that time. I'm sure someone somewhere has fallen for it.

We thought they were contemplating a burglary. Someone probably has done
this because they were incredibly persistant...just calling and calling.

I don't get it either... the phone off the hook, the gift card, an unrealistic "reward"... There has to be something more to it. But again, with that kind of reward, you'd think it would seem to unrealistic even to the most greedy sucker.

I am sure it has worked somewhere, sometime.

Ridiculous! I mean seriously...

They spoke such poor English and the connection was so poor that it was
pathetic.

I don't understand the connection between the gift card and the big money. You buy a Wal-Mart card and an Asian shows up with money? It's not plausible, even to a nitwit, or am I expecting too much?

They kept calling and getting the answering machine but just saying things
like..think it over and today is your lucky day. We were hoping they
would say something incriminating enough to take to the police. You can
bet your boots that some poor sucker fell for it.

Have you reported this to the Attorney General's office? If not, you need to do that.
comment by redimpala on May 21, 2011 7:20 AM ()
No but we should have.
