The Home Wars

Because I have contributed to candidates and to the Democratic effort I am on the “She’s A Live One” list and continue to get solicited for more donations for future campaigns. And they call me at home. I have told Ed I do not plan to donate any more for a while. I need a break. And Ed is not as giving in these ways as I am -- the word is frugal.

I would rather not get on the phone at all if it is a campaign worker, but when Ed answers, he banters with them a little, referring to me as “channeling Emma Goldman”* which he did yesterday, then he hands me the phone and I am looking daggers at him because I have asked him to always say I am not at home. But he continues to hand me the phone.

So then I hatched a plan that should nip his game in the bud. Normally I would beg off contributing any more at this time, but instead I gave them $25 and wished them well.

Then I had a heart to heart with Ed. I said and I quote, “From now on if you hand me the phone when it is a campaign worker, it will cost you (us)$25.” He said you didn’t give them anything this time did you? I said, yes, $25. (He looked outraged.) Just know, said I, that from now on that is the plan and he said he would find a way to get me for this.

I feel strangely happy about this plan.

xx, Teal

Sounds like a good plan, and I like it. You've tried everything else.

It's already working.

Back when I was working, I contributed to several environmental organizations, and they have ever since contacted me for money. Last time I said why don't you send me a donation, I need it worse than you do.

There is no sating political and charitable fund raising. Nancy Pelosi's
people are obnoxious. I just got a shopping bag from the Smithsonian
yesterday. Prior to yesterday, I got a bunch of cards from them. You
really know how to handle Ed. My congratulations!

When I make a contribution, I only offer an e-mail address as my contact link.

I've grown well past being polite or even civil to any telemarketer, political or otherwise. I just hang up immediately. They may at times hear a curse word a moment before the phone goes dead. Or I may say "Get a real job." I see no need to act reasonably with these intruders.

Most of the calls of this nature I get are from political organizations that I have been in touch with during the campaign. I believe in what they are doing. I am not going to cut them off. I am going to wind them down. It's the price of being involved.

LOL! I've learned that when I want to contribute to something, I do it in cash, and only in an unsolicited manner that cannot be traced back to me. No matter how worthy the cause, I HATE to be solicited!

Candidates? Campaigns? Not until 2014!!!!! 2013 is going to be a year of 'peace' for me!

Perhaps Ed is giving you the opportunity to be a big gurl and say: "I won't be contributing today". First email I received after the election that said "It's not over" was the last. I dropped out/suspended emails/calls from everything political. I still get the NRA. The last one said straight out that she was a paid fundraiser so I was polite and just hung up.

I have fielded over the past year at least 20 calls during which I have said not this time. Trouble is, these are earnest beings, fulfilling a mission and I am gentle and being gentle takes a half hour that I often don't want to spend doing this. So I have been a "big gurl" countless times including times when I have fielded unwanted calls for Ed. So he could pitch in now and then, doncha think?
