A Stream of Missteps …

I’ve been on and off with my undiagnosed problem and have narrowed it down to muscle spasms in my back that make it seem that I can’t breathe. Well – muscles – I can deal with those.

Meanwhile, it is draining to be constantly struggling so I start things and go to do something else and forget what I started. I got really tired, so I decided on a nap, forgetting that I had put on a pot of water so I could hard boil the last three legs from the old box and the water boiled away. Ed got to it before the pot scorched but was upset with me. Go figure. He called out in a loud voice interrupting what had started to be a nothing nap but had morphed into a deep sleep. What can I say. I was really undone.

I got up and it was too late to take the bike ride I had planned, so I started dinner. I gave up on the eggs and put them back into the refrigerator because I needed that same pot for the potatoes.

So later, Ed, who snacks, went and got what he thought was a cooked egg. Then he did this howl-of-rage thing that he does and I am still laughing as I imagine that moment when he realized yes, this is a raw egg. Tomorrow I will remind him that I draw an “x” on eggs when they are cooked.

Honest.

Hah! to Ed. I hope you've got your breathing problem narrowed down to where you can solve it easily. When my hard-boiled eggs are done, I am always in such a hurry to get them to cold water, invariably I forget to shut off the burner. Just one of those things.

In spite of pains and such we can still laugh at our (and others--poor Ed) mistakes!

Your post, plus the comments, makes me feel better about my own similar senior moments. Turn water on to make tea, forget about it, water boils out. Get up from computer, walk to kitchen, forget why I walked to kitchen. The list goes on. Plus, I can't remember names and have a rough time buttoning shirt cuffs...

Well, adding to the litany, I got the pot ready to hard boil eggs: Water in pot (√) Pot on stove (√) .... and off I go forgetting to turn the burner on.... [SIGH].

I boil eggs for Donna for mornings when she's not around (read: still sleeping) when I make breakfast. I put them in an egg carton that is clearly marked "HB" in several places. If she gets an uncooked egg it's her own fault (and it has happened).

The boiling water thing--don't you just hate when that happens? I've been known to microwave a potato for five minutes, but forgot to put the potato in!

I do that when I am cooking for Rex. I hate to confess that I cook Lipton's
chicken pasta for him and add a can of cooked chicken to it. Sometimes
the pasta boils over or scorches when I am doing something else. Do you
suppose we will have to give up multi-tasking?

When I cook dinner, however, I use a digital timer and it works like a charm. I should train myself to use it for the water too -- for instance, just guess a time when it might boil, like 7 or 8 minutes, set the timer and do whatever.

Sunday must have been Boil It Dry Day. I did my part by forgetting a teapot of water. Sometime I'll have to find an electric teapot with automatic shut-off, like my iron.
