The Early Voting Experience

Early voting began today in Florida. It will last eight days as compared to the sixteen days under the former Republican Governor Crist, who was shunned by his party because he extended voting hours as well and because he greeted President Obama graciously when he visited. The current governor, Rick Scott, a Republican, has an unfavorable rating and I hope we vote him out. He is not up for re-election this cycle. He is sleaze personified. Crist is now an independent and sat with President Obama at a recent event.

Ed and I got up at 5 this morning because we wanted to be at the early voting venue by 7 a.m. when the doors open. But when we got there at about 7:12, there was already a long line. We stood in line for 2 hours – actually I sat on the concrete walkway protected by an overhang and did ballet stretches. I avoided making eye contact – who me, my attitude said, I am normal – you’re the weirdos – don’t you ever flex? Helpful poll workers would come around and offer to let me sit inside on a chair but I always said “I’m fine” and “give one of those chairs to an old person”.
Even if we had been there, say, at 5 or 6, there would still have been a two-plus hour wait because we would then be waiting for the doors to open.

We needed a photo I.D. One thing about living in a community that has one bus operated sporadically by a paraplegic from Alabama, is that even poor people have cars so they have drivers’ licenses. Eat your heart out Governor Scott.

When we left, the line had extended into the parking lot – no lessening of voters and more coming in all the time. I hope this is a sign of vigor for the Democrats.

We got home about 10, an hour late for Brunzy’s med. We gave him his phenobarbitol, then Ed had an egg sandwich and I had my missed cereal and soon I will lie down because it was indeed an ordeal, but well worth it.

xx, Teal

In New York and Chicago (where I grew up) employers are mandated to allow time off for voting. We have no such convenience in Florida. It is all designed to impact on workers who are very often likely to vote Democratic. This morning the polls said the candidates are even in Ohio. I think the number of badly informed voters is appalling.

I plan to be at the polls at seven. Photo ideas are not a problem. I will
be walking the floor all day.

Thankfully, our Indiana ballot was short and simple. I see that California's is like yours. Ugh. It used to be early voting was a snap--no lines. Nowadays, well, it's like election day.

I should add that the League of Women Voters helped out a lot by distributing fliers urging a no vote on all the amendments -- at least 6 -- The ones I really studied were full of right wing stuff buried in difficult language. The ballots also included elections for hospital board trustees -- wha? Who cares? Judges, county commissioners, etc. Where I didn't know anything, I voted for the independent or Democrat, and where there was no affiliation, I voted for the woman -- yeah, I am chauvinist when put to the test.

Early voting has been most useful to Democrats because, being traditionally on the lower end of the economic scale, it is they who can't leave work when voting hours are limited. So despite the crowds, it is worth doing and if you think you'll have a problem, take food and a chair. We did neither and Ed stood the whole time. As mentioned, I sat on the concrete because for me that is not a problem -- I am used to sleeping on hard surfaces from many years of resting between dance classes.

Our early voting place was changed from the township building, where it was always held, to a local village hall. Not everyone knew about the change, including some people working in the township building. Early voters are supposed to be put on a special do not call list so they are no longer pestered by political calls. That is the best reason to vote early.

Early votes cuts down crowds on the main day. It has come, however, to also favor working voters in states where mandatory time off from work is not the rule. Chicago and New York insist that all employers give employees the morning off. Florida does not have that enlightened approach and workers have to scramble to get to the polls in the early morning or after work. That's why ear;u voting days and times are so heavily under attack by Republican legislators. They can't win without cheating and screwing it for minorities, students, and seniors and the poor.

I got mine last week and mailed it in--now I can only hope it doesn't disappear!!! I wonder how many are really reading those 11 amendments--all of which are necessary or further the Republican's cause--like the one that will give Scott the power to get rid of the 3 Democratic judges!!!

We got sample ballots and I read them, and noticed that what was "given" in the first paragraph of one was freedom of religion -- fine -- we all like that and in paragraph three, a striking down on the ban of government money going to religious institutions. The League of Women Voters distributed material that recommended "no" on all amendments because they were all worded in a way to disguise sneaky right-wing legislation. The LWV was also heavily kicked out of voter drives in Florida, and were threatened with jail time if they persisted. That's Rick Scott.

I left Florida in time to miss out on Rick Scott. Perhaps the Dems will come up with a viable candidate to oppose him in two years...

His approval rating is low but Florida is oddly persuadable to do stupid things and they might swing back. It's hard to know. I heard Charlie Crist will run again to be governor as an independent. We have found good people to know here, but the average person leans toward the right.
