Sandy in New York City

Watching the news and I see that all of lower Manhattan, including the area of my former loft, is flooded. In all the time I lived in New York, there was never such a storm. I was living there when the entire northeast lost power for three days and also when major snow caused the then mayor to suspend all traffic. What a kick it was to walk up the middle of 2nd Avenue, a major artery, and not a car in sight.

I phoned my friend, Inese. She Is on west 57th St., and not all that far from the Hudson, but in that area there is no flooding. She is three crosstown blocks away from the crane that is hanging in mid-air across the street from Carnegie Hall and being buffeted by 90-mph winds. Power was deliberately cut off in that area to avoid explosions if the crane fell. It is part of the construction equipment for a 90-storey building going up and it will be the tallest in the city. She told me that one of the one percenters has already rented the top floor for $40 million dollars.

All public transportation is suspended and interborough tunnels are flooded.

I feel sorry for the tourists that were caught with no way to get home because air travel is also iffy. What a way to end your vacation.

xx, Teal

My friend's mother in Brooklyn lost power for a little while but no flooding. She is in her 90s and infirm with a caregiver. It could have been disastrous for her as well.

One of my worst fears when I lived in lower Manhattan and my husband was on life support, was that we would have a power outage. (Also the loft was a 3rd floor walk-up.)

we have fare well here.Other parts of the state not. Many power outage and they are still working on it.Road closure and many debris on the road and highway.
Plenty of rain and flooding. But for us branches and limbs and our fences came tumbling down.
But glad that it was not too serious for us.Heard about NY and NJ with plenty of problems along with Boston,MA and the coastal shore are taking or did take a beating.

Sandy is too cute a name for a storm like this; it should be Sandra.

There is a front page photo in the LA Times showing the Brooklyn Battery tunnel filled right up to street level.

I hate it for those who are suffering. I know you still have many friends
who have to struggle with it.

I have a friend in California who warned me to "get out of Florida" when we were having our series of hurricanes a few years ago. Yeah, I said, like California doesn't have major fires and landslides. New York has had hurricanes before, just nothing like this. My friends who do live on the lower East Side, are usually out of town. I couldn't reach them last night.

My friend Gene on the east side in the 60s said all is okay--a lot of wind and rain but it looks like the South of Manhattan including the 9/11 memorial is getting hit.
