An Old Photo, and Memories

Me, at 26 or so on the roof at the Ipsy Wipsy, a fanciful name given to a 35-room mansion in Highlands, NJ, on the Navasink river, separated from the ocean by only a sandspit, with both the river and the ocean in one view.

The mansion was owned by Fletcher and Inga Pratt. Fletcher was a naval historian of some renown. The sci fi crowd used to gather at the Ipsy for camaraderie and such. I am pretty sure I am the only survivor, seeing as the crowd was mostly at least 20 years older than me.

I didn't know which codes to post so I included all three.

Inga burned the mansion down for the insurance money after Fletcher died. Jay and I once considered buying it. The Pratts only lived in part of it -- it was hugely expensive to heat.

Guests were usually housed on the third floor with bedrooms on all sides and a huge bathroom in the middle that was known as Grand Central.

What a time that was.
And I loved every minute of it.

I love the part about burning it down for the insurance money. There are people here who totally lost their homes in the flood, and some of them give me the impression that they are thinking 'good riddance.'

When Charley took our pool cage, we cheered. It was insured. We had a much nicer one built with a mansard roof, although it took a while because contractors were so busy.

It sounds like a great place to gather, I would probably have enjoyed it as far as being inspired by the scenery. I am glad you shared this with us.

Hi red, you might have enjoyed the company -- the most prominent science fiction/mystery writers of the 40s, 50s, 60s were wont to gather there. For a young 'un such as meself, it was Heaven to be allowed to just sit and listen.
