Iowa Doesn't Speak for Me

I am one of those Eastern liberals who wonder why Iowa has become the barometer for the nation. Iowa is entitled to have its caucus, but from what I have read about its selection process, it is not only archaic but heavily weighted to reflect the bias of powerful local factions. That caucus should not have the weight it does nationally.

It is ridiculous to have a system where any one section of the country, particularly one that does not have a diverse population, is the tail that wags the dog. The media is largely to blame for exaggerating Iowa’s importance, focusing on how well a candidate does there and suggesting that the winner has a powerful lead. This analysis carries weight with the “me-tooers” who will be swayed by those results.

When Michelle Bachman talks about “taking our country back,” she means reversing history to that time when blacks and other ethnic minorities had no say, no influence, no voting rights, and were dependent on white benevolence (what there was of it) to survive. Perhaps the descendants of native Americans should start a “Peace Pipe Party” and scream about taking their country back from the likes of Michelle Bachman. Bachman will likely win the Iowa caucus, another excellent reason to believe that what they think is crap.

I dread another presidential campaign, seems like we haven't recovered from the last one.

I am aghast that people like Bachman and Palin have deluded fools out there in the voting public who support them. WHAT has this country come to??

Bachmann's hubby runs a so-called gay-cure program at his clinic. I wonder if they have a poverty-cure program there.

Teal: I think so, too. Latentcy is everywhere.

I think virulently anti-gay men have sexual identity issues -- would love it if her husband would be caught in an airport bathroom with a "friend".

We want Sarah, we want Sarah! She made the cover of Newsweek.
I'm ignoring the whole thing.

Sarah is probably curdling inside at all the attention Bachman is getting, stealing HER thunder. They richly deserve each other.

Does she have money to fill her campaign and what her husband is he the one saying that they can make gay straight? Was he one
Good post there Ms.teal.Obama is our man and have no fear.He is more popular than the jerks who are running. You can bet that I will be working for him.Jerri should not be afraid of her.

She has a loyal following of right wing evangelicals, tattooed wonders and ignorant middle-class losers. She thinks this represents the world instead of just her corner of it. It makes her delusional about her chances. She gets a lot of money from them. She is doing all right for now. If the Republicans want to self-destruct, they'll nominate her.

Ignore Iowa. The winner there seldom lasts long in the race. Bachmann as a nominee is a certain loss for the GOP, and the powers-that-be in that party know it.

I wish Iowa knew it. I get the sense that they are strutting around, thumbs in lapels, enjoying their power and that is truly annoying.

I feel like a lone voice crying in the wilderness here in Oklahoma.
The trouble with trickle down economics is that it doesn't and never
has worked. Bachman is cute and that is why I am afraid of her. Our
cute Gov. recently won an election here over an unattractive woman who
was highly qualified.

I want to vomit every time a Republican spokesman is on TV saying that we can't "raise" taxes because it means jobs won't be created. What a fantasy. The rich have had their tax breaks for years, so where are those jobs?

Yes image and trendy sound bites sway a lot of the ignorant with which we are more than blessed. I have to believe that the Bachman enthusiasm is a limited one but impresses her because she is surrounded by it. Reminds me of a cartoon where a fish says of his former companion, "he must have made it out of here, I don't see him," and his buddy is dead on the floor. I don't think Bachman will do well with the independents and they are a serious factor in the election. If she bags the nomination, the Republican Party is doomed. Though I hate what they have come to stand for, it is better to wish for the reasonable Republicans to regain influence than to wish the party dead.
