Getting Organized ... Going Nuts

I am so frustrated with things getting out of hand in the house, that I forced myself to put “one” thing away today. It was a box of coffee packets from BJ’s. This brand’s box is larger than the one I used to get and it wouldn’t fit in the same space, so I cut it down and still no good. I took everything out of the drawer. Oh, oh, bug dung. Everything out, wipe with Clorox cloths, get another box from garage, transfer bags.

Some stuff would be more convenient if it is stored in cabinet over the coffee maker space. Look in there, no room. Take stuff out. Go to computer and Google shelf life of various items. Everything goes: What, you may ask. Gift bags of coffee used once. Decaf for guests who won’t drink regular and never come again. Most of it more than four years old and info on line is keep it for a few weeks once opened. Reassuringly, info says that old coffee isn’t unhealthy, just not tasty. So I am thinking, pour out the decaf, recycle the plastic. Oh, ha. The stuff is now like concrete. So I am soaking it. Nonfat dry milk bought just for Bella, dearest friend, now gone. Nice remembrance, but she gave me a stainless teapot, so I’ll focus on that.

What else? Aunt Jemima’s flour for pancakes, not used since 2004. Uncle Ben’s rice, very old. When I’m finished, I’ll have space for stuff I can throw out next time I clean.

Meanwhile, my Swiffer electric sweeper charger won’t work; I couldn’t find the right replacement on line. Searching for one was taking up life time and since this keeps happening, I am buying an Oreck cordless that my gtf Nadine says is great. But Ed is so busy with his guardian duties, that he can’t drive us to Fort Myers to the Oreck store. Meanwhile, I am picking up cat hair with a wet paper towel.

The throws I got for the sofa and love seat that are designed to specifically protect from the cats will not stay in place. So Nadine said I should get elastic and attach at the sides and run around the back. I tried rug-to-rug sticky mats and all they did was offset sticky stuff on the leather and now I am having trouble getting that off. Not only that, I also cut to size some material from the mat package to use for its real purpose and after a week of anchoring some throw rugs, it is not working, and the rugs are roaming just like they always did. But any store carrying wide elastic is also at least half an hour away by car so I have to wait on Ed for that as well.

And I just remember noticing some throw-up next to the silk sofa in the living room -- I practically never look there so I've forgotten about it. Have to get to that too.

How I miss New York, where my autonomy was awesome.

xx, Teal

I'm going to put something away today; the Christmas cards adorning the mirror over the fireplace.

You really hit the jackpot with this post. It seems we can all relate, either to the pets, cleaning or NYC.

Yes, I enjoy writing about my day-to-day and people relate to the same frustrations. Thanks for stopping by.

No, my Oreck units aren't cordless, but I have long high power extension cords hidden and power strips all over so I can reach them easily and don't have to move furniture, which is impossible for me to manage.

Those pesky bugs! Like you, when I see signs of them (or mice) I have to clean out the whole drawer. We don't have the problem here, but before I left Colo I put all the silverware and linens in plastic bags. Determined mice could chew through, but at least the casual visitor won't be trailing across everything.

I love my Oreck upright vacuum, a real workhorse, and have a hand-held Oreck vacuum, too, which is very handy. I have another little cat hair roller, which works well, and use sticky tape, too. I'm buying a hand-held steamer next.
My little kitchen has very limited cupboard storage, and adapting space for efficiency (to have things where I need and use them) is a challenge. Some of the cupboards are too high for easy use, too. Sigh. Right now I'm redoing the cupboard above my coffeemaker, too, to make room for a new coffee bean grinder. It feels like I'm trying to solve the Rubik's Cube.

I have a good Miele canister -- I don't like to use it. My mission is that it be cordless and my friend told me the Oreck is great. I can't be bothered moving furniture to get the cord out of the way. Are your units cordless?

Not sure if this fits under the "Bad things happen in threes" category or not, but it should. Crazy.

Sounds just like my kitchen! I found a jar of Postum last year, which I haven't seen in a store for about 15 years! Horrible stuff. It was probably petrified, but I didn't check.

And when they bump into your check your purse/wallet!!! Did I say that about New Yorkers??? I better hide!!!!

Grew up in iffy neighborhood in Chicago; went to school with thugs-in-training; roamed Chicago on my own from age of 12; lived on the lower East Side in New York; know all about bumpers. But I would live there again!

I have lint rollers. The best place to buy the refills are the dollar cheap stores. I use a roller refill every week,at least, and the tear-off segments only work for a few rolls at the cat hair, but they do work.

Every once in a while we pay a cleaner to do the floors and bathrooms and one of them used the attachment on the vacuum and it worked beautifully. But I am far too impatient to change tools and I don't like to use the vacuum anyway because it is a canister type and has a cord and I hate those. So I pick up the hair. when I see it, by hand. The Swiffer was great on tile because the broom just swirls it into the air. Still waiting for Ed to take me into Fort Myers to the Oreck store.

My cabinets are all full too. I should follow your example and get rid of old stuff. Do you have any thoughts in how to get cat urine out of carpet and leather couch? My old cat is trying to tell me something. I cover couch with plastic bags over a big towel and newspapers over the top. It works for a while.

Try to Google re. cat urine -- I used something years ago but have forgotten what it is. I'm sure you can find something specifically for this on line or at a pet store. I don't have that problem now -- just throw-up and one cat, now older, gets diarrhea and doesn't clean himself and offsets from his bottom on tile and carpet and I use Resolve pet stain remover and it works well. Then I clean his bottom. Sometimes I have to shave it. He growls.

We differ there--I was born and raised in NYC--loved it--loved both my formal and street education BUT--the last trip I was there was in 1985 and I said then "Never again"--it's not the city I knew (though I haven't changed!!!)

After I got down here, I got slower (meaning I didn't walk as fast). In New York, I had to speed up or get run down. And everyone bumps into you on their way to wherever. But I still love it.

I have just thrown away, cleaned closets, cleaned cabinets, and donated piles
of clothing to Cerebral Palsy and Vietnam Veterans Auxilary. I urged Ted
to give his clothing that he doesn't use to the Veterans and he was happy to
do so. I feel your pain. In one of the articles that I read it said cat hair comes up with a wet wash cloth. It might work.
comment by elderjane on Jan 13, 2012 9:07 AM ()
Wet paper towels work well but that is wasteful. I'll try some old wash cloths. Ed won't throw anything out. He keeps buying stuff and forgets what he owns. Wish I had the energy to do more. After cleaning two kitchen cabinets today, I got sick (fever, fatigue) and had to go to bed. And I cheated on the cat pans -- instead of totally washing them, that I had planned, I just scooped and added a lot of fresh litter.

Do you get a chance to visit NY.?I missed it and have not been there for awhile.
I loved to go there soon.

I haven't been to New York since 2007 -- I used to go to see my piano mentor and she died in November 2007 at the age of 99. It's expensive to do and I used to justify the trip to Ed by saying that I didn't know how long I'd have her. Now I don't have "an excuse". I have plenty of friends still and don't have to stay at a hotel but it's still costly. I might get there in April for a memorial service for Dalton's mother that I posted about. Dalton was the son of an editor I worked for at Harper & Row. We have reconnected. He was only 7 when I first knew him.

I just sent out an e-mail to friends about a studio apartment in NYC now averages $2,322 a month in rent--and you know they have NO room for decaf packets!!!

One of the great regrets of my life is that I can no longer really live in New York -- not only from a financial perspective, but from the time remaining to me. I just don't have the time to do it all again. And I want to.
