Turning Leaves

Ah, Autumn! If it weren't for the knowledge that winter will surely follow, Fall would be much more enjoyable. Still, I like this time of year. It's been in the 80's lately.
I checked out the Autumn colors while jogging yesterday. As dry as it's been (severe drought), the leaves aren't going to be as colorful as usual (so they say).

There are only a few trees that really produce colors: hard maples (not silver), oaks, and ash. Most others are bland: elm, walnut, hackberry, mulberry, locust, sycamore, catalpa.
Enough. I won't bore you with my knowledge of tree colors.

Pretty soon, I'll be raking leaves off the lawn and removing them from the gutters. I have lots of trees around my house, and it's quite a chore. Perhaps a wind storm will blow them all away!

********************************************************************

A couple of quick notes. According to my sister, our father "blacked out" at supper time last night. She couldn't arouse him, so she called for an ambulence. He had virtually no pulse or blood pressure. At the hospital, they ran all sorts of tests, but couldn't find the cause or anything else wrong, so they sent him home! I'm going in to see him in 20 min.

On a happier note, while jogging yesterday, I found a single anklet sock that will match a solo sock I've had sitting around forever. I thought its partner would show up, but it never has. Now, it's found a new "sole mate". Tee hee.

I envy your knowledge of trees. I am willing to bet that you are a decent photographer, but you never post pictures. Hmm.

I do miss the fall colors. But I wouldn't trade Hawai`i for anything...well unless i could get to Pohnpei, American Samoa, New Zealand!

Hawai'i has its own colors! When I went through the Botanical Gardens north of Hilo (last March), I was amazed at the vivid colors of all the various plants. Marvelous!

Scary about your Dad! I don't like it when doctors can't figure out what is wrong... Nice on finding a matching sock!

My father's blackout remains a mystery. He seems to be doing fine at last report. Thanks for your concern, Kristi.

Seems something is going on with many people myself included. This woozy/& falling down in the elderly. Past few weeks the older people falling, or mini passing out?
Mid-age 50's seem to feel woozy, myself in that category, started to use a walking stick to steady myself around the house? So???I used to believe my woozy stuff was connected to earthquakes, and now there are so many quakes daily..well..?
Blessing to all and be careful yourself on your jogging

Hi Ana! Sorry about your "dizzies". I seriously doubt earthquakes have anything to do with them, however. I jogged 15 miles over the weekend and feel great! I've lost 15 lbs this summer, and my BP is way down. That's all good! I'll gain it back this winter, most likely.

Fall is a beautiful time of the year. We don't have the lovely colors where I am but in the mountans of Georgia the trees are gorgeous. The cool temperatures are a relief from the oppressive heat we have this summer. I had difficulty breathing due to the high humidity. I am flying to Idaho the last week of October to spend time with my granddaughter who is 4 and I am looking forward to some frosty mornings. Hope all is well with your Dad; I can't believe they did not keep him overnight for observation.

The doctor gave Dad that choice (to stay overnight). Of course, he opted to come home. I spent a couple of hours with him yest. and he was normal. We even walked a half mile. Enjoy Idaho. I've been through there, but never stopped.

Hey, Randy! Autumn greetings from Northwest Ohio, where the fall leaves are turning glorious reds and golds little by little. So happy to bid farewell to the dreadful heat this summer brought us. Sad though that I've eaten the last of the delicious blackberries 'til next season. Did you grow your field of wildflowers this year?

Saying a prayer for your dear Dad!
comment by marta on Oct 10, 2010 9:58 AM ()
Gracious, it's Marta! Long time, no hear. Thanks for the prayer (although you know I don't believe in it). He seems to have recovered with no ill effects. I'm still harvesting red raspberries, albeit teeny, dried up ones. I have plenty of blackberries in the freezer. I may make a pie. AS for wildflowers, if you're referring to my tall grass prairie, it's looking good. Not many flowers, however. Too dry, I guess.

Yes, Autumn is here--we are coolig all the wa y downto the 80s today--I love it but we have been having problems with the high tide causing flooding-that's part of the South Florida Autumn!

New moon (neap tides) time of month. What do you hear from Alfredo? He's been AWOL (unless he's written today)?

I can't imagine bare branches already for JJ. I am savoring the beautiful days for as long as they last. Scary about your Dad. I am glad your sister is living with him.

Yeah, I'm certainly enjoying the "Indian Summer". We broke records yest. And yes, it's a good thing Barb is staying with Dad. He told me he plans to move out very soon. Details later.

Scary about your dad and I have a thought. If he got up suddenly after eating, it could be orthostatic hypotension, a sudden drop in blood pressure. When younger people squat for periods of time and get up suddenly, the same thing happens but they recover quickly. At his age, not so quickly and could be serious. Glad this wasn't the case here.
comment by tealstar on Oct 10, 2010 6:42 AM ()
Good theory. Only trouble is, he never got up. He said the next thing he remembered was the 3 EMTs hovering over him. He had no clue he was out.

Sock mating, sport of kings.

I knew I'd get teased about 'fessing up to that little bit of info.

Hope your dad is going to be okay.

What are you doing picking up strange clothing while out jogging? You don't know where that sock has been, unless maybe it's your sock that you for some reason stripped off sometime in the past, and if it is your lost sock, what were you doing taking your clothes out in the country like that?
comment by troutbend on Oct 10, 2010 6:03 AM ()
First, my dad is okay--like nothing ever happened. Strange. Second, you've hit upon why men are different from women--we pick up road socks! Don't worry, I'll wash it (And it wasn't originally mine).

The flood of a week ago brought most of the leaves down. Unfortunately, they are mixed with twigs and branches. I think it's illegal to burn leaves in NY now, but with the sticks mixed in, I should be able to get away with it. Then winterize the coach... Yeah,... I too know what's coming next.
comment by jjoohhnn on Oct 10, 2010 5:51 AM ()
I save my "twigs" for starting up furnace fires. We have a burn ban, too. Just about the whole state is under one. One half inch of rain since the first week in July ! Amazing.
