Nobel Winner

I don't personally know him, nor ever heard of him, but a local Purdue U. professor won the Nobel Prize for chemistry. The Lafayette (IN) area is all abuzz over this honor.

Last year, a professor from my alma mater (Indiana U.) won a Nobel Prize in economics, so our pathetic state (ranking 45th in college graduates) has something to brag about two years in a row.

The winner is a 75 yr old Japanese native, Ei-ichi Negishi. His expertice comes in the field of organic chemistry, specifically finding new ways to bond carbon atoms--methods now widely used for medicines, in agriculture and in electronics. He's been at Purdue for nearly 50 years and is well liked by his students.

Congratulations Professor Negishi! You've made our community proud.

I marvel at the knowledge of people who study in so much depth of the differing divisions of science and physics! I have to watch a documentary (or read an article) several times, in orde to have it 'sink in' .
Many congratulations to the recipient of this honour

Congratulations! We have never had a Nobel winner from Georgia and probably never will. We head the list in under educated.

Didn't Jimmy Carter win a Nobel peace prize? When Obama won last year, I thought Carter was listed as one of the several presidents that had won.

I'm not sure we have ever had a Nobel Prize winner from Oklahoma, although we have had a number of astronauts. Congratulations to the great state of Indiana!

Thanks, even if the "star" is Japanese!

I never thought of Indiana as a state that ranks low in education- you are, aftrer all, home of Notre Dame, so the rank surprised me!

Most of ND's students are from out of state. We Hoosiers are very much under educated. It's shameful.

CGTS to your fine state!

Proud (some of the time) to be a Hoosier. Thanks.

Gives us hope that intellect is alive and well in Indiana.

That's why I had four kids--to add intellect to the state. However, three of them live out of state! But I'm still here!

Congratulations to Purdue for not making him retire at 65 and to Indiana.

We don't have much to brag about, so when we do, I do.

My favorite Nobel Prize winner was Richard Feynman, what a character.

One of his books was delightful to read. He made physics fun.

He was quite a guy... bang those bongos!
