Top 10 Presidents

Election day. Good time for me to post my top 10 presidents. I won't bother to explain why. Trust me! I never taught U.S. history, but I still have my opinions and reasons. I got the idea from Morley Safer's interview of David McCullough on 60 Minutes last Sunday.

#1 George Washington
#2 Theodore Roosevelt
#3 Franklin Roosevelt
#4 Harry Truman
#5 Thomas Jefferson
#6 Abraham Lincoln
#7 Barack Obama
#8 Bill Clinton
#9 Ulysses Grant
#10 James Polk

Honorable mention: John Adams, James Madison, John Kennedy, Dwight Eisenhower, Woodrow Wilson

Depending on how President Obama does in his second term, he may move up. It'll be tough to supplant those ahead of him.

Good take. Right on. FDR also got us out of the great depression.

Grant's administration was chock full of graft and scandal. As a general he was magnificent, didn't care about how many troops died under his command, so long as he killed more rebs. As President he shacked up with the big trusts, railroad tycoons, etc. One of the worst presidents in my estimation, right down there with Harding, Coolidge and Nixon.

We must have read different biographies (and autobios)!!! I figured him to be a healer of the nation and one who saw the future of America better than most.

I would LOVE to hear your reason for Clinton. I liked him too.

Unlike the Bushes, Nixon, and Reagan, Clinton had intelligence. He had perseverance. And, despite fighting tooth and nail with Republicans, he somehow got the budget balanced. America in the black!! Who would have thunk it?!! I could go on with his other accomplishments, but not here or now.

Yes,Randall what happened to Kennedy?
I was here when he has been.Obama and Clinton. Not sure about the rest.Though Lincoln is my favorites of way back when.

See my reply to Maggie. Lincoln's indecisiveness always bothered me, i.e., not firing Gen McClellan and waiting 3 years to present the Emancipation Proclamation. He brooded too much, and that depresses me! (Which is one reason I like Obama so much--always positive!)

I would've had Reagan and Nixon in my top 10.

You must be a Republican! They'd be in the middle of my pack.

I can't believe Kennedy didn't make the list!

While I debated, he was only in office for 3 years. While he was a visionary, he made mistakes (Bay of Pigs).

I don't know enough about most of the presidents (before my time), but it must be fiction if Obama is on the list. Unless this is the top 10 progressive commie list.

read up on things "before your time" and you might gain some perspective.

All I can do is chuckle ("commie" comment). Ever hear of Joe McCarthy? Those days are over.

Ulysses Grant?! Wasn't his administration known for its corruption scandals?
comment by steve on Nov 6, 2012 6:35 AM ()
Yes, but it wasn't his fault. I think he rose above it. Perhaps I include him as part and parcel of his leadership as a general. He did make every attempt to heal the nation after the Civil War.

Lyndon Johnson surprised us all with his liberal views on civil rights. He was very effective. Read Doris Kearns' bio (I typed it in manuscript.)
comment by tealstar on Nov 6, 2012 5:56 AM ()
I probably should have included him in honorable mention. I have opinions on how and why he became a civil rights backer, but I haven't read Kearns' bio.
