Critters

Thought I'd add a bit of color to this post. Hope it's readable.
I didn't get that extra hour of sleep it was touted we would get by turning our clocks back. Not only did I stay up late to watch the thrilling end to the LSU-Alabama football game, but my internal clock woke me up at the usual time. Oh well, it's a good excuse for a post lunch nap.
Regarding the post title: it's "critters on the loose" time in and around my house. I've caught about a dozen mice--all in the basement. My basement is home to a large population of centipedes. Spiders don't bother me, but I HATE centipedes. They are disgusting. I have no clue on how to get rid of them.
Outside, deer, possums, and/or coons are eating my persimmons. Rabbits chew off anything edible in my garden--peas, beet tops, chard. Moles run amok. Chipmunks and voles have made holes all over the yard. They know winter is coming. (For all you raccoon lovers, did you watch the NOVA special this week about them? Still love them?)
I also had an "encounter" with a squirrel yesterday. He saw me before I saw him. He ran right at me! I thought he was attacking. Truth is, I was between him and a tree, and he ran right through my legs, literally!, to get to the tree!  It must be some instinctive thing. Man, did it scare me!
I was going to cut some wood today, but it is currently 30 degrees with little warmup forecast (forecasted?). I can wait. Besides, the Colts are on this PM. And I can find plenty of things to do around here. I can't freeze any more produce. Freezer is packed--both the refrigerator's and the chest (15 cf). I even sorted through the chest freezer and restacked everything to make more space. (I found some 2004 jam!)
Well, have a good week. Be well and take care.

Ah HA! So you don't like centipedes! At least that is something. Hubby went to Alabama so he was on pins and needles for that game. Quite scary for a true fan like himself!

Alabama was pretty lucky to win. I didn't care who won. Just a good game. Caught another mouse last night, but he must have dragged the trap away. Can find neither!

No wonder you do not feel alone/lonely. You aren't!

For sure. Few humans, however.

Agreed.

Well, I guess if you've stocked your nest, it may be OK to let them stock theirs... so long as it isn't in your basement! I hate any type of infestation! We had rats so bad one year it took months to eradicate them. Traps didn't work. Neither did those sound emitting devices. I didn't want to poisoned them but I felt I had no choice. I then used sheet metal and spray foam insulation to block every crack, crevasse, and hole so that new ones wouldn't find entry. Never had the problem again.

While I love animals, especially "in the wild", it's like you said. They don't belong in the house (or garage). I have a wood shed, and they build nests for winter hibernation. That's really not so bad.

Bar you standing outside banging two suacepans wouldnt have a clue how to get rid of them ther critters
the only critter we have is those bloody possums--they get into the roof and play silly buggers--then you have to find out where they come in and plug it after you remove them which is hard to do ----HAVE FUN

Possums and raccoons. And I'd like to know how mice get into my house.

Your time clock will get back to Norman in a few days

Is that "Norman" Oklahoma? I was back to "normal" this morning. Took only one day!

Didn't your security camera catch the episode between you and the squirrel???
comment by steve on Nov 4, 2012 7:21 AM ()
It would have definitely made "America's Funniest (not) Videos. Big squirrels don't bother me. It's those little "pineys". They get in everything.

I have read about electronic devices that emit sounds that will keep moles et al away. You might look into that.

I've tried it. Doesn't work. I wonder if they're like opossums and produce litters of 10 or more? Sure seems like it!

our biggest problem is mice! and with a two year old in the house and also a kitten, I can't put out poison or traps. so I have moved all of the pantry items into plastic tubs with lids. I really hate mice.

Mice are insidious. I love my mouse trap (with peanut butter).
