Titleless

I can't think of a title to this post. I'm not sure where I'm going with this.

Here we go again--the hype is on. "Big winter storm", etc. headed our way Saturday, blah, blah, blah. They get your attention, only to inform you, it'll be 2-4", perhaps. Then they hedge a little, "depending on the storm track". I guess people really do get sucked in on these "the sky is falling" warnings.

Actually, I AM interested and concerned, because I'm to pick up my Honduran daughter at the airport late Sat. night. That's a 55 mile drive. Dark. Snow. Ugh.

*************************************************************
I heard on the news yesterday that "the fatter you are, the earlier your demise". NO DUH. Isn't this old news (an oxymoron, if I ever heard one)? But I guess it's official, with percentages relating amounts to years lost. I know one thing: you seldom see fat people in nursing or retirement homes. The fat ones don't live long enough to make it there.

*********************************************************************
How do my neighbors collect so much trash and garbage? I mean, on my jogs or drive by's, I see mountains of junk to be picked up by the county garbage truck (on Wed.). I think it costs $10/month, maybe more. I don't know for sure, because I don't use their services. I recycle everything, even roadside trash I pick up. I don't understand why my neighbors don't recycle. Too much work, I reckon. And maybe since they live out of cans, whereas I eat fresh garden food, they have more trash to dispose of--and no compost pile.

******************************************************************
One more thing (for now). Do we really need the letter Q? How'd that come about? Not from the Greek alphabet (alpha beta). Couldn't we get by with K and W (like kwick)? And we almost always have to waste a U with the Q. Can you imagine the Chinese learning the word "queue", prounounced "q" or "cue"? And it has 6 different meanings, according to my dictionary!

Have a nice weekend. I hope I survive.

One more reason for me to loose weight!
I know all of the q words for scrabble that do not use a u- like faqir, qi and tranq, right off the top of my head, but most of them are of arab origin.

Remind me never to play scrabble with you.

Not to worry. My DSL modem died two days before Thanksgiving and I was finally able to get a new one Dec. 2. I hope you are checking your comments to your now older posts during my enforced hiatus. I've left you several as I'm catching up....

Oops. I forget to check my old posts. Since I get no notification, I never know when I might get "old mail". I'm on it now!

'r eiria achos zebra, ydy mo cyfieithadwy i mewn i ' Saesneg '!
(The word for zebra, is not translatable into 'English!)
I think this is because 'zebras' weren't an animal that the Welsh 'saw' in Wales.
The Welsh, as a 'people', only spoke their own, language - incorporating only what they knew.
I think I mentioned in my earlier comment, that 'Welsh' is believed to be the language of the entire country, prior to the Roman Conquest (I am not saying that the actual language was 'called' Welsh - it would have been the language of 'Britain' during that precise period).
Welsh is still spoken and is encouraged in the education curriculum (of Wales). Granted, it is not as common as 'once upon a time', but I have been to places - Lampeter in mid Wales for example, where walking down the high street I was amazed at teenagers in a group, were chatting to themselves (as teenagers do) completely in Welsh!
Lots of words have come into the vocabulary which have to be spoken in the 'English' form i.e. 'Zebra', because there is no feesable translation.

So I take it, you CAN speak (evidently spell) Welsh! I'm impressed. From what little I know about the language, I find it fascinating. But then, all other languages seem fascinating to me. Thanks for the information. I'm going to have to add Wales to my "bucket list" of places to visit. And you!

We turn out a mingy little bag of trash, largely cat food cans, while the neighbors wheel out huge plastic containers jammed to overflowing with fast food trash and pizza boxes.
comment by troutbend on Dec 3, 2010 7:06 PM ()
You can recycle tin cans. Do you have to take your trash all the way to the highway (Colo)? What a pain. Hope you're having nice weather in LV.

You have fried my brain with the "Q" thing. How would we ever solve a crossword puzzle or a jumble with out a "Q" and a "U"?
comment by gapeach on Dec 3, 2010 6:51 PM ()
Nancy, I didn't mean to upset you! I always hated getting a Q in Scrabble. That meant I had to get a U! Life isn't fair!

Drive carefully.

I was just delighted to wake up Dec. 1 to enthusiastic snow flurries dancing all over on the wind. Lovely! Northwest Ohio hasn't had a real snowfall yet, and thinking back to my driving days, I never really liked to drive in the snow. But a good snowy walk with a hot mug of coffee or cocoa is fun....

I'm a recycler, too, as much as I can. Alas, my apartment has no recycling pick-up. I try and avoid plastic garbage bags like the plague, although sometimes there doesn't seem to be an option. Hmmmm.... Do you have any suggestions, Randy?
comment by marta on Dec 3, 2010 10:06 AM ()
I confess, I'm lucky. I can burn paper products, toss ashes in the field, throw food garbage on the compost pile(s), etc. In your case, I don't know what to suggest. Some people just let garbage pile up in their homes! But I doubt if that's your style. I'm glad to see a comment from you. I was getting concerned about your whereabouts.

The letter Q is the 17th letter of the Roman alphabet. I suppose it became embroiled with the Anglo-Saxon speech and eventually into the narrative when writing became used during the time of King Alfred.
In the Welsh language, it is only in the last two or three years that the letter Z has been added to the language! Up until then, there was not a word with a Z in it! (loads of double LL's, FF's and DD's though) - actually, 'Welsh' is the language that historians believe was the language spoken throughout the Island before the Roman conquest!

I knew I could count on you, Breezy! Interesting. Now can you speak any Welsh? I assumed it was a nearly forgotten, at least unused, language. I can understand using the letter Z. How else could you spell Zebra?

In my city a few weeks ago we had our first storm. They announced on the news all day long to get home before 4:00 so most business and schools closed early that day. We "maybe" got 2 inches of snow. It was ridiculous the hype was for that little bit of snow. Then last Sunday we got about 10 inches and of course everything was open!
I didn't type 1 "Q" in that whole paragraph!
comment by meranda on Dec 3, 2010 8:35 AM ()
I flipped the TV on briefly this morning, and that's all they were talking about. All for 2" of snow. Grrrrr. It's not even windy (no drifting). Thanks for dropping by.

It is supposed to be seventy today. Eat your heart out! We don't have a
pick up for recycling so mine goes in the garbage.
comment by elderjane on Dec 3, 2010 7:22 AM ()
You'll get yours eventually. It's really suppose to get cold next week. I still have to clean my gutters and finish up the garden Fall cleanup. This cold snap came on too suddenly.
reply by solitaire on Dec 4, 2010 6:00 AM ()
Yes and we ae havign a 'cold wave'--will only get up to 71 degrees durign day and will get into the 50s at night--of course they will show a tourist on the beach all wrapped up sitting in a beach chair!!!

Also in the news yesterday--if you take statin drugs for cholesterol you will lose your memory--if you don't your arties will get clogged--so d you want to lose yur memory or die? Tough question!
By the way--I am glad you blog
comment by greatmartin on Dec 3, 2010 6:57 AM ()
Yeah, poor babies. Only 71 degrees. It's 28 and snowing here. I take a natural statin, red yeast rice, for my supposedly high cholesterol (the total is over 200 only because my HDLs are so high). I forgot what else I was going to tell you.

You sound a bit cranky. Perhaps a quick trip to the library would cheer you up?

We have roadside pick up out here for everything. A limit of 3 bags of trash every two weeks and green bins where we toss our food scraps and anything else compostable that is also picked up by the county. By the time one recycles all that can be recycled and composts all that can be composted, it's not hard to keep the trash under the limit...and I have a child still in diapers.I freeze my compost in the summer, though to avoid maggots.Yuck.

The letter Q, eh?
comment by juliansmom on Dec 3, 2010 6:39 AM ()
Actually, I did go to the library (no Anna) and hardware store. I didn't mean to sound cranky, although admittedly, I wasn't pleased with just finding out I had to go to the airport late tonight. Even when I had 7 kids and a wife living here (4 mine, 3 hers), we didn't have trash pickup. I loaded up the truck once a year to take to the county "dump" (sanitary landfill). Cost me $5 at the time. I'm good.

Ed once was seduced by an ad for a composter on sale at the local Home Depot. I talked him out of it because I knew he wouldn't deal with it and we would become a magnet for all the flying things out there. We have a recycle pick up. Isn't there one in your area? Not everyone is a born-again farmer. I allow you your elitism because I have my own.
comment by tealstar on Dec 3, 2010 6:25 AM ()
I meant a compost pile (of which I have two). I have neither a garbage disposal or compactor. Out in the rural sides, we have no "curbside" recycling. Even the local communities have quit doing it. Too much trouble.
