Sunday Morning Church

I'm sitting here responding to replies from my previous post while listening to a broadcast of a Methodist Church worship service (Frankfort, IN). Why in the world, you ask, would I be doing that?

The reason is, my sisters (twins) are doing music--Carole in the choir with a solo, and Barbara (who lives with me) playing the piano and cello. I couldn't make myself go in person, so this is the next best thing.

The radio is off more than on. I CAN'T STAND IT!! The preacher is "sermonizing" at the present. He's already prayed several times, recognized congregational members (for one reason or another), mentioned all those "sick" in need of prayer, and just plain acted goofy.

The choir sang something patriotic. It was awful (except my sister, of course). Now they are "celebrating communion". That's where my other sister is playing cello.)

I will never attend church again, as long as I live. Do any of you attend church? I can't recall reading posts regarding church attendance. Just curious.

Have a glorious "Fourth" (and fifth). Cookout and fireworks display at my Dad's tonight. You're all welcome!

I actually want to attend church again soon. Thinking about it, I don't really know why, but I do. I want to feel a part of it for a minute.... I am really wondering why. But I'll figure that out.

Old church habits are hard to break. They suck you in with their music, socialization, "inspiration", and mainly, guilt. Do what you want to do.

I am with you. There is a great deal of sanctimony and self-involvement in the conduct of organized religion. You can be spiritual without going into a church. Since the age of 16 when I consciously stopped going to my family's Greek Orthodox church, I have been in one maybe once or twice, for a wedding or funeral. I can't even remember whose, at this point and maybe even doubt I did that.

Or, like me, one can be un-spiritual, with or without church. I just enjoy life as it is.

We attend Unity Center as of a year ago. It's an inclusive community, with a very inspired minister, who happens to be our friend for over 25 years.
They do have different music each week, EXCELLENT!

I remember listening to inspirational ministers. They Do make a difference. No amount if inspiration will 'suede me at this point, however. Enjoy your church services, Ana.

I rarely attend church. I believe in God but I don't like how organized religions use church doctrines to imbue fear and control their members. Never mind all of the Right wing Christian perversions. My own Church lost me when they wrote the bull (A church law) that abortion is an unpardonable sin about 20 years ago. What? I can go next door and slaughter a family of five and their dog and still be forgiven, but I can never be forgiven for an abortion? Oh my gosh! I am on a soap box!
comment by dragonflyby on July 4, 2010 10:47 AM ()
hey dragon, that's because the church's views on abortion have nothing to do with killing a fetus, but with preventing people (specifically women) for exploring their sexuality without punishment. It's sexual tyranny, pure and simple. And, of course, incredibly hypocritical, considering the pedophilia and homosexuality of many priests.

We all have our reasons. Your's is the typical "hypocritical" aspect, versions of which vary. Of course, I simply don't believe in god.

I'm with you. Left the church when I was 16 when I learned that females couldn't go behind the altar because they weren't "clean". You should have heard me on that at the time. Lots of @#$%$ in my language even at that age.

What time at your dad's house? What's he serving? Well I just want to know as I have a few other invites!
Have a Happy 4th!

Too late. But we had grilled "Boca (soybean) burgers, potato salad, asparagus, and rhubarb pie. You missed a good meal and great fireworks!

I started going to church several years ago because I liked the music and wanted to sing hymns and found that I enjoyed the social connections because my life is so isolated. Over time the music devolved into what is known as '7-11' songs - seven words repeated 11 times, the official name is 'worship songs' and no traditional hymns. Then, the minister's wife developed breast cancer, and that's all he could talk about, as if it had never happened to anyone before. It made me think that he didn't really care about the health problems of any of his church members, and I got the feeling he wasn't going to start, he'd just focus on his own family and his own selfish interests. But I enjoyed the friendships and activities.

Ouch. So do you still go to church on occasion? Not in Vegas, right?
