Scraping the Bottom of the Barrel

Next step: getting rid of my television altogether. What kind of crap are they feeding us now? "Celebrity Wife Swap"! Are you kidding me? And that's on top of all the other s**t.

Even the formerly good networks, like History and Discovery have succumbed to the tasteless minds of America. Pawn shows, Swamp people, etc. defy the imagination. Television integrity has vanished. I don't even bother with MSNBC with all the overkill politics. I'm not a Republican.

It's not all bad. There were three outstanding NOVAs on PBS last night (Birds of Paradise, volcanoes, and earthquakes). It's the other 95% that sours my view.

Even my last two books were disappointing. When I saw Bill Maher and Penn Jillette books at the library last week, I was thrilled. My conservative minded library has few "liberal" books. Both authors are atheists, so I figured that would be right down my alley. Wrong.

The content was crude and rude, fowl and obscene. The F word (and worse) was prevalent throughout. It was almost enough to make me protest to the library for buying them! They do not give nonbelievers, like me, a good name.

Toss in the crap my newspaper doles out, and you can see why my outlook of the media is so negative. Guess I'll have to stick to the classical and jazz music on the radio.
Adios for today.

I only watch one of the reality shows myself, especially now that Simon is gone. I do enjoy American Idol... The rest of those shows I agree are CRAP! I stick to movies myself or CSI cuz I like the science of it. And Music :)

There are just so many "CSIs". Too intense and dramatic for me. The so-called "talent" on Idol type shows repulses me. Let's face it: I'm just getting old and crabby!

I agree about the amount of really, really awful TV -- and the sting is how much we have to pay for it, if you want it clear or gasp, in HD. TV used to be free and so now it has less "right" to be awful than before. I am now paying a very large bill for about 5 shows that I watch.

Supposedly, I pay around $15 for an "unadvertised" DISH package. I get local channels and quite a few "cable" programs, but it pretty limited. That's okay with me! I'm like you--I watch just a handful of shows.

The "Fifth Estate" has become a joke...and it saddens me to no end.

The Fifth Estate is the press.

Not familiar with that one. Doesn't sound like I'm missing anything.

"getting rid of my television altogether" is not an answer. There's already lots of things you avoid, more power to you. But you avoid all of it, and you miss the world. Your citicism is draconian. Much like my criticism of pop "music".

Stick with PBS! The best 24-7!
comment by marta on Jan 5, 2012 5:14 PM ()
I do. Plus, I'm lucky to get 3 PBS stations. They often offer different options, so I can pick and choose.

Bad language is everywhere. When enough people use it, it becomes the norm. Not in my house, although I realize that I am in the minority.
comment by boots586 on Jan 5, 2012 4:53 PM ()
I'm certainly no "goody-two-shoes" when it comes to foul (not fowl!) language. But when every other word is obscene, I shudder.

yes, most of them are totally junk.Wipe out are they serious? Most of the crap are for young adults and they love this stuff. The bachelor is sickening and I mean sickening.
You get these uneducated girls, women whatever they are.All they do is crying, sniffling etc.
Just shut them off.Nothing as you say it worth while. Most of these are junk .
I do like my educational channel. Not sure if you have it there.
One of our local channel is running 50 and 60 etc serial and do not liked some of them.
Your going to laugh but do enjoy watching the "Chew"I have learned a lot in cooking.
I am getting tired of Ellen show.

One definitely has to pick and choose. I guess part of my rant is based on the opinion (mine) that the majority of Americans are stupid. Republicans prove that, Democrats demonstrate it. (I never did like Ellen.)

Yes, the world is full of cap but you can't throw it away, so get used to picking and choosing the worthwhile things and ignoring the rest. I find lots of interesting fiction and news to follow on TV. I just click away from the stuff I don't like, and if it's all bad on a given night, that's when I turn the set off. I do this so automatically, that none of the bad stuff registers. "Yeah, that sucks," is about it and I move on. It would behoove you to focus on the positive.
comment by tealstar on Jan 5, 2012 9:24 AM ()
You've never complained about anything before? Didn't I say I watched 3 good shows? Isn't that being positive? Can't I be critical without being criticized?

Ron DVR'ed Celebrity Wife Swap the other night and we watched it last night. Mindless TV? YES! But I like not having to pay attention... You certainly have a point though. I am realizing that I am ALWAYS on the internet, via my phone, laptop or ipad. I am going to make a conscious effort to read and listen to music more. Maybe someday soon I will even take a day off from technology. I wonder if I would survive????

Every "older generation" (like mine) worries about the "younger generation" (like yours). I'm guilty. At least you read us old fogies--why, I'm not sure. It's easy to get addicted to TV and internet, etc. But there is more to life--real life--out there. At my age, I don't want to waste any of my precious few years left. We all eventually have to toss out the garbage.

To wit: "Mob Wives." ; "The Fabulous Housewives of (write a town here _______)" ; "Aliens Built the Pyramids," etc. and etc. ; "The Bachelor," et la "Bachelorette" (not a real word, my guess.) Let's see what's on Home Shopping Network. LOL... OH. Don't forget the Mayan Calendar programs!
comment by jondude on Jan 5, 2012 6:22 AM ()
And worst of all--"Work It"! Who wants to watch a man dressed up as a woman? (Even Tootsie repulsed me) It's not funny-- it's sick.
