I have an old 3'x5' maple desk which is unused except for collecting papers and memorabilia. The drawers are packed, making them virtually un-openable, especially in the summer when high humidity swells the wood.
So this past week, off and on, I've been on a mission: to clean the blame thing out. It's taken me awhile, because I have to decide what to save and what to toss. Some things have value only to me--at least I think they are of value. Ha.
I consider other papers of "historical" value--that is, something about me and my life that my ancestors might find interesting. Double Ha.
Okay, so I've tossed out old golf score cards. Of course, it took forever to review them! But they're a waste of space.
Old house papers of all descriptions, disposed of. Who cares what my property taxes were back in 1970? Freezer use and warranty, circa 1974, out. (I did read where it said the life span of a freezer is 15 years. Mine's 37!) Appliance (and others) manuals, adios.
I could go on detailing what's in that old desk. It's amazing--old tax returns, garden "how to's", maps, kid's report cards, teacher "stuff", etc. It's not easy to decide what goes and what stays. If I died tonight, my kids would probably throw the whole desk in the furnace! Before I depart, I'll tell them to hang on to my "treasures"--at least 'til I'm long gone and forgotten. I hope neither happen.
