Clean Out Time

I have an old 3'x5' maple desk which is unused except for collecting papers and memorabilia. The drawers are packed, making them virtually un-openable, especially in the summer when high humidity swells the wood.

So this past week, off and on, I've been on a mission: to clean the blame thing out. It's taken me awhile, because I have to decide what to save and what to toss. Some things have value only to me--at least I think they are of value. Ha.
I consider other papers of "historical" value--that is, something about me and my life that my ancestors might find interesting. Double Ha.

Okay, so I've tossed out old golf score cards. Of course, it took forever to review them! But they're a waste of space.
Old house papers of all descriptions, disposed of. Who cares what my property taxes were back in 1970? Freezer use and warranty, circa 1974, out. (I did read where it said the life span of a freezer is 15 years. Mine's 37!) Appliance (and others) manuals, adios.

I could go on detailing what's in that old desk. It's amazing--old tax returns, garden "how to's", maps, kid's report cards, teacher "stuff", etc. It's not easy to decide what goes and what stays. If I died tonight, my kids would probably throw the whole desk in the furnace! Before I depart, I'll tell them to hang on to my "treasures"--at least 'til I'm long gone and forgotten. I hope neither happen.

I would not know where to start sorting through all that I have accumulated!

I know--it's daunting. One might have thought that after two former wives cleaned me out, I wouldn't have anything to toss. Alas, too much!

One more comment-my freezer is 43 years old. I have never had any trouble with it. Of course it is not energy star certified and probably uses a ton of electricity.

Have enormous clutter to deal with -- Ed also a keeper. The thing about putting papers into the crawl space (like financial records that must be kept seven years) is that if you are doing it right, to make room, you have to de-attic the older stuff and shred it. It is a lot of physical labor. I am the designated crawler in the attic because I am fexible and small and can swing my legs over the cross beams. Ed should take a photo. Meanwhile, I need to clean catch-all drawers. Wait for that.

Attic, basement, closets, cabinets: they're all in need of a major cleanout. I'm thinking about backing my truck up to the back door and tossing junk directly into it. Why keep a typewriter?

My catch-all drawers are multiplying. And all my flat surfaces have things on them that shouldn't be there.

What kind of freezer do you have?
I hold on to things that only mean something to me as well. I do try to go through things now and then though. Good luck!

It's a Gibson freezer. The lid is rusting, but otherwise, the ol' baby is working fine. I talk to it.

I recently went through some of my mother's old papers and found checks from the 60's, old notes long since paid off, receipt at least 50 years old, etc. They all got shredded and dumped.

I think it is fun to look at old receipts just to compare prices then and now.

My mother saved her mother's receipts, and I now have them! As dumb as it sounds, they're sort of fun going through them. Historical, in a sense. I don't think that's why they were saved, however.

Makes you feel lighter to get rid of stuff. I've been doing some decluttering while I'm stuck at home for far too long over the holidays.

And it felt good to have a huge bonfire yesterday with desk papers and yard 'n garden debris. Can't retrieve them now.

love looking through old treasures and papers.

I doubt if my children would enjoy it. But who knows?

When my mother died she left a dresser full of cancelled checks and bank statements, a cabinet full of empty cottage cheese containers and plastic strawberry baskets, and a closet with brown paper grocery bags. Is pack rat-iness hereditary? I have a small collection of cottage cheese containers.

I put soup in the cottage cheese containers for the freezer. They are just the right size, but I only need a limited number.
reply by boots586 on Jan 9, 2012 3:52 PM ()
What can you keep in cottage cheese containers? Besides food--which holds my berries and apple/pear sauce in the freezer. I'm fairly good at throwing out stuff, but sometimes it catches up with me.

Next is the attic. Heaven help me. Yes, we're having glorious weather. I got out for a 5 mile walk/run yest. More today.

In preparation for my move this year, I'm doing the same thing, cleaning out drawers, simplifying. Decisions, decisions.... Perception of what is valuable changes over the years, I'm noticing. Very interesting reflections. The most important records will be moved to a digital archive. All that old paper has to go. I wish us both luck!

Good luck! I was constantly asking myself, "Why in the world did I save that?" And then, I'd stick "it" back in its folder!
