Primal

By now, most of us old timers have heard about Bo Diddley's demise. I have to admit, he had a certain raw approach to rock and blues music. He was a giant of his time and a tremendous influence over the rock 'n' roll industry.

However, he was simply too primal for me. Yes, the beat was always a Bandstand 10, but one chord the whole way through? Two at the most. Maybe not boring, but repetitious.

You see, I never liked rock music--not the early 50s stuff, not the present crappola. My parents were musicians, and I was raised on jazz. I have nothing against rock--some I even like, but it's a beer vs. wine thing. It's PB and J vs. pastrami on rye. It's American vs. Bleu cheese. It's an auto mechanic vs. a brain surgeon. The formers are all ok-basic down to earth foods (or occupation).

I don't mean to sound snobbish or elitist. It's just that rock music/musicians never aroused my emotions like jazz did/does. I always was a little strange.

I ask because I am not very familiar with jazz and I thought the answer very important. I am going to listen to that number and see how it feels. If I randomly pick a jazz number it may suck and that could turn me off...so now I have a good place to start. Thanks.I will let you know how I liked the tune.

your problem was good taste in music. my peer group dissed me all
the time for liking classical music. i just looked at them with
pity. i haven't liked any pop music since jazz waned. diddley
who i am inclined to say. and aptly named i am guessing. elitist
here and so what.

I didn't know Bo Diddley, but I went to YouTube to look him up, and I like him!

Brubeck and Herbie Hancock are great, but I prefer "smooth jazz"- you know- Boney James, Enya, Kenny G, etc., and I adore Celtic ballads. My other love is classical music, or maybe I shouldn't admit that.

If you had to recommend one jazz number to somebody that was unfamiliar, what would it be?

Music is supposed to soothe the savage beast but it scares Rex.

I LOVED the Beatles. Everything in rock music after them has been a HUGE disappointment.
I love the blues, R & B, and Dixieland jazz.
However, the Miles Davis and Thelonius Monk stuff leaves me cold.
Guess I like something with a beat and a melody.

Rock n Roll was good to dance to... from Bill Haley right through the era of the 'Twist'; but it never occurred to me to sit down and listen to it. there's nothing to engage the intellect. Jazz always seems 'sour and unhappy' to me and I can't listen. I've never sat down and really listened to any music that wasn't composed between about 1650 and 1850...

Jazz is a great thing and probably my choice as well. Variety is the spice of life though so I need a little bit of everything from time to time.

It seems rare for kids to like their parents music until maybe the kids are older and the music brings back nostalgic memories. I like lots of different music... Elvis, country 80's, Patsy Cline... it's all good.

I must be a P and J person;however, I do enjoy my Bleu cheese also. I guess I just enjoy a wide variety of music depending upon my mood at the time. Variety is the spice of life if I might use a cliche.

Interesting post. Tho' your parents' musical taste obviously influenced you, many children take the opposite extreme, heartily disliking what their parents listen to. Mine for example, have no desire to listen to the classical music that I love. But I listen to whatever strikes my mood. Don't you have times when you've had too much jazz and need some Rolling Stones or Bach or even reggae???
