Plump America

Maybe it's just me, or my friends, or Indiana in general. It seems everybody is overweight.

I looked around at the men and women attending the last Lions Club meeting, and all but one person was plump (in my opinion). I'm talking 32 people, mostly middle to old age!

It was equally bad at a church chili supper I went to several days ago. Watching others eat and eat and eat, I could understand why. Chili, peanut butter on white bread, and pie. I think Indiana still ranks second nationally in obesity (after Mississippi), and I can vouch for that.

Now I'm a rather slender guy (120 lbs at just under 5'8"). Always have been. Others say it's because I have a "high metabolic rate", whatever that means. I happen to think it's because I exercise considerably and watch what I eat. It has nothing to do with metabolism, per se. Nobody is more health conscious than I.

I don't comment, let alone preach, about diet and exercise to my friends. I know that doesn't do any good. Instead, I try to lead by example. Evidently, that doesn't help either. It's a sorry state of fat people out here in Hoosierland. I take a lot of heat for being "underweight", but we'll see who lives the healthier and longer life.

I've noticed that obesity has definitely become the norm. According to the Body Mass Index scale, I'm well within the right weight for my height, but I still can't help but get paranoid anytime I over-indulge (which actually ties into my most recent post.) I'd rather stay at the lower end of my proper weight than at the higher end. It almost seems that complacency is to blame... people pack on 10, then 20 pounds and say, "Well, I'm middle age. It happens. That's just how it is." But it doesn't have to be that way. My husband's family is all very obese, and I know that's a real motivator for him to stay fit as well.

Randi, I have great story about mice. In the loft, Jay set traps out and put up a score sheet on support pillar. Guy came to read the gas meter and couldn't take his eyes off the score sheet. It read: Stantons, 8 - Mice, 0.
He didn't ask.

I've "heard" that Canada isn't as fat as the US, but I think it's close. My husband's family is an "overweight family." FIL died early (62) from a stroke, MIL has multiple health issues, SIL is a spinster at 100+lbs too heavy. BIL stays fit. My husband used to be overweight, until he moved out of home to his own place, and got back to a proper weight. In my family, my mom is overweight (but is actually losing weight now), and one brother, while my other brother, me and dad are not. You must be pretty skinny at 120lbs! I have vowed never to be fat. And despite my love for potato chips and chocolate bars, I'm pretty fit and only 5lbs heavier than I want to be.

No Randall,it is not you.We have a lot of obesity out there
It is an epidemic. We have too many choices in food.People do not give a
hoot about what the survey is saying about this.
All they do is eat, eat, eat, eat.A sickness. This what cause the rise in our
health care.I stay away from brunch and all you can eat jazz.
Most of my meals are eaten at home.Yea,I like to eat but still careful what
I eat. This is very sad to hear this. No,it is not you but the people out there. We have all these fast food places, which is no help.
Both parents are working,do not take the time to feed the family a healthy
meal. They get all the take out from these places.I do not feel sorry for them so let them eat cake, ice cream and kill themself.
whew!did I say all of this.Yes,get real America. You are what you eat.

By the way, Oklahoma has to be very fat too.

Some of us just have to be exceptions to the rule. My cholesterol is l50, my carotid arteries aren't full of plaque, my bones are strong and I have always had a tendency to overweight despite exercise and deprivation. Some of it is in the genes. I credit my grandmother who lived to age 93 for my good health. Like Hobbie, I am just a little plumpie.

By the same token, we fatties tolerate you thinnies and appreciate your reluctance to pontificate to our faces. Believe me, we all feel vindicated when some athlete drops dead from a heart attack while exercising, but in our hearts we know you're right.

Sadly, it's embarrassing at times when I see American tourists here in Mexico. People must think we are the most unhealthy, undisciplined people in the world.

Yep, America has that going on. I was referred to as having a "slight build" a few weeks ago.

Traveling through America's heartland invites heart attack by contact. It has been like that since I've been watching. I had great metabolism as a teen, could eat a banana split a day with no problem, extra nuts too. That changed in my mid-20s. Got back on track when I started dancing. Lost ground on coming down to Florida and being distracted with other things. Was so depressed (also without energy), so forced myself (kicking and screaming) to return to lifelong regime. Am now 2 lbs. over my best lifetime weight. Will get those suckers off too.

I need to do some exercising as well

yeah, it's also true that men burn more calories then women overall because they have a higher muscle content. I heard yesterday that 30% of women in the US are overweight and 25% of men.
The only way I know how to change a persons metabolism is through exercise, - so I don't see why people can say that their metabolisms are too slow to lose weight. Although with age it also slows down. Things to look forward to in my world I suppose...
