I'm going to take some heat for saying this, but I thought the "opening ceremony" for the London Olympics was a bust. Perhaps my expectations were too high (although I didn't know what to expect).
Kudos for all the volunteers, their hard work and time involved. And the production (by Danny Boyles) WAS different ("quirky"?). However, I was disappointed and critical.
First of all, the entire production seemed to be a huge commercial for England--its history and people (They omitted King Arthur). The "industrial revolution" section was boring. In fact, the whole thing was boring, especially the childrens' bedtime part of the show. Mary Poppins, indeed.
The "comedic" inserts and film clips tossed in distracted from the live action on stage. They were inane and unnecessary. I wasn't amused. Very disjointed.
Then there was the so-called music. Drums pounded the whole time. Guitars twanged excruciatingly. I resorted to muting, even reading a book while the show was going on. The march of nations was even worse.
Really, the involvement of athletes is what the Olympics is all about. It's the coming together of the whole world. It's not about London or England. We know their history.
I don't want maudlin sentimentality. Enchantment I can do without. I'm not big on the spectacular displays of fireworks, pyrotechnics, light effects, or whatever they're called. I liked the children choirs, not the boisterous, raucous, head banging "music" that pervades.
Now, let the real show begin. I will not be watching the closing ceremonies.
