Olympics Opening Ceremony

I'm going to take some heat for saying this, but I thought the "opening ceremony" for the London Olympics was a bust. Perhaps my expectations were too high (although I didn't know what to expect).

Kudos for all the volunteers, their hard work and time involved. And the production (by Danny Boyles) WAS different ("quirky"?). However, I was disappointed and critical.

First of all, the entire production seemed to be a huge commercial for England--its history and people (They omitted King Arthur). The "industrial revolution" section was boring. In fact, the whole thing was boring, especially the childrens' bedtime part of the show. Mary Poppins, indeed.

The "comedic" inserts and film clips tossed in distracted from the live action on stage. They were inane and unnecessary. I wasn't amused. Very disjointed.

Then there was the so-called music. Drums pounded the whole time. Guitars twanged excruciatingly. I resorted to muting, even reading a book while the show was going on. The march of nations was even worse.

Really, the involvement of athletes is what the Olympics is all about. It's the coming together of the whole world. It's not about London or England. We know their history.

I don't want maudlin sentimentality. Enchantment I can do without. I'm not big on the spectacular displays of fireworks, pyrotechnics, light effects, or whatever they're called. I liked the children choirs, not the boisterous, raucous, head banging "music" that pervades.

Now, let the real show begin. I will not be watching the closing ceremonies.

I said the same thing. I have seen some really outstanding opening ceremonies. Unfortunately, this was not one of them. I thought the music was atrocious. If I wanted rock music, I could have watched MTV. And if he was trying to tell a story of England, he missed the events that could have added color and pageantry of the King Artur legends, the kilts of Scotland, the leprechauns and mystique of Ireland. All that would have been so much more colorful and interesting than the Industrial Revolution. I got so bored I turned it off and read instead.

I'm glad to hear someone in agreement. National health care for 11 minutes? Ugh. And that "love story"? What was that all about? Just plain stupid, I say. Getting crotchety in my old age!

Snore. Had it on, but didn't watch much as nothing caught my interest.

Once every four years, you know. And I figure I don't have many left!

I was looking forward to the swimming tonight with Michael Phelps and there was Brian on the NBC news saying that Phelps lost. Bummer. And boo for the spoiler.

That happened to me, too (except on ABC news)! Bummer. Remind me not to watch any "Nightly News" for two weeks. I still watched the swim match.

I could have used a little less of the 80's section and more Paul. Other than that, I loved it. The economy has hit everything. There were fewer athletes marching this year. Every country had women participants this time, although the women athletes still had to walk behind the men from Saudi Arabia.

I'd given up long before the end of the "parade". (10:30 bedtime) Glad I missed Paul and torch lighting ceremony. Actually, I don't think I missed anything!

Didn't you see Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean) when the orchestra was playing? He was hilarious, as usual; the best part of the whole opening ceremonies.
I recorded it during the day and DH and I watched it last night. Unfortunately, the ceremonies ran overtime and my PVR stopped recording a good thirty minutes before the end.
What a shock. Poor Paul McCartney has lost his voice.
Most of the rest was a complete and utter bore.

Thankfully, I went to bed before "Hey Jude", a song I loathe. Give it up Paul. And sorry, but the Atkinson skit didn't even put a smile on my face. What the heck was that trying to prove? 10 minutes spent (wasted) on one man. It's about the athletes, not a comedian.

Yes,I did not see this too busy with other things.I hear that it was very boring

Where did you hear that it was boring (other than from me)?

Oh, I thought it was AWESOME! I loved the fireworks. You seem to be feeling negative. Hope you feel better soon!

I hate getting old and overly critical. I really try to be tolerant and accepting of things that irritate me, but it's difficult. Happy you got your jollies, however!

I could kick myself! I missed it!!! Did not have the TV on all day.

I watched because I didn't want to miss anything. It's a once in 4 years event. But really, you didn't miss much.

I didn't watch it. Actually, each host nation does have license to showcase itself. That they did it badly by your standards doesn't mean they shouldn't have done it at all. Coverage in past years flits back and forth from gymnastics and other aesthetic type sports like diving to team sports/track/field, etc. I don't like that within the viewing period you never know when what you like will be on. Very annoying. I'm sure they are doing the same this year. I'll look in on it from time to time. I am less involved than I used to be. I still like the winter games best. As for hockey and soccer, ho hum.

By all means, opening ceremonies, including the "parade of nations" is necessary. But 205 countries? Whew! I also pick and choose what I watch. As usual, I "watch" with sound muted and book in lap.
